Sleep paralysis/Astral projection?

Discussion in 'Science and Nature' started by drpep1968, Jan 14, 2016.

  1. I'm sure this topic has been done somewhere before, but whatevs.

A few nights ago I had an experience that I cant really explain, and didnt really like too much. I do have sleep paralysis maybe once or twice a month, which is another unpleasant experience.

Usually my sleep paralysis goes something like this.
-Waking up to find I cant move
-Feeling a sinister presence in the room
-Seeing a figure or feeling the bed shake
-I Wiggle a toe or finger to try and get my body to move around, and snap out of it.
-Sleep paralysis usually happens while lying on my back as well, and whats weird about it is, I don't like to sleep on my back, I sleep on my side or stomach. On the nights I have sleep paralysis I have a want or need to sleep on my back, or i'll just end up in that position.

That's how my sleep paralysis works, but this time it was something very different. This time it felt like my body was pulling away from me, and the root of the pulling feeling was my head, I noticed it as I was still asleep, but I was an automatic viewer, aka I was seeing what was happening to me while I felt it literally happening. My dream self didn't like the feeling so I decided that I was going to try and wake up, and the feeling was that my body was snapped back, then I woke up and turned to my side. The back of my head felt cold and tingly, and I decided I was just going to go back to sleep.

Anyone else feel like their dreams are trying to say something, or that they are special or different? This makes me wish there was some sort of dream recording device, that we could use and playback our dreams in order to analyze them..

  2. Astral projection is a really bad term.

It implies your consciousness is going somewhere else. That you perceive something far away.

    It is just a hallucination.

  3. Sleep paralysis is kind of like near death experiences.. in that different cultures usually have different experiences. For NDEs, a lot of Americans say they see their life flash before their eyes.. and in Japan, a lot say they see themselves in like a Zen garden. With the "demons" of sleep paralysis, each region of people typically shares the imagery created. In the US, it's usually a ghost of a person or a demon like with Christianity.. think I remember hearing a region in Africa had some monster with a rat face that every saw. They're subconscious projections that your consciousness uses to try and make sense of why you can't move. I get sleep paralysis.. its not common for me, but not rare.. and I don't see shit cause I don't have any of those kinds of beliefs. I just lay there, bored.. I'd like to see something actually. If someone believes in ghosts, chances are they will see a ghost, usually sitting on them or holding them down. If they believe in angels and demons, they'll probably see a demon holding them down. When you sleep, there are a lot of processes that go on to keep you from moving.. like your brain dampens the signals for muscle movement so you don't thrash around from your dream. When your consciousness wakes up though, sometimes the subconscious doesn't follow and still has your body on lock down. It controls your breathing too, so you can't consciously control it and makes it feel like you can't breathe.

As for astral projection.. like Yuri said, it's a hallucination. At least until I see proof otherwise, I can only assume that it is your brain being your brain. There are people, myself included, who view themselves from outside themselves while awake. They usually say that that comes with a mental detachment, forget the actual term for people who do that.. but the term is more of a negative one. It's how I do math usually.. part of me is sitting there doing the work while another part of me is outside of me, looking down and watching me do the work.. but it is all a creation of my brain.

That said, yes.. your dreams are often trying to tell you something. A better way to think of it, it is your brain trying to make sense of everything. It takes memories and knowledge and passes them through abstract reasoning to try and create new and random connections with hopes that one of those connections will make sense.

  4. I think astral projection could be the answer to deja vu. After all, your mind will take you places no space ship could ever touch. Next time you feel like something seems familiar-you might have made that place up in your head from past experiences in different places etc, so in our minds most things are familiar.

Yes and they also speak of the devil riding on your back or some sort of incubus when people speak of sleep paralysis, because some experience a heaviness, but I don't. What I do know is that there is always, ALWAYS a looming presence, and it never feels like it has good intent. It feels like its intent is to scare you. Which could possibly be my brain reacting to being in a half asleep state, but not being able to move, who knows. I'm not spiritual either, but i do believe in ghosts and such.

  6. I always felt like Deja Vu and dreams were connected as well. Like we all have some ability to predict the future, either that or our dreams just have specific details that stick around in our subconscious and apply themselves to everyday life which would cause us to think that we have seen it before.

Or it may just be a glitch in the matrix [IMG]

In my opinion dreams are teachers that reflect what we have deep in our subconscious from day to day life. They help us face our fears and learn to overcome problems and get out of our comfort zone. The sad part is its really hard to find people that can fully understand them to help share knowledge with others. Its also similar to meditation when you cant seem to solve something and one day you have a dream and if you can remember it usually holds the answer.

I had many moments where i had trouble figuring something out then randomly the next day after sleep i have somehow come up with the solution. People call it the subconscious i call it the superconscious!

I have the ability to remember dreams very clearly and i still remember dreams from when i was a child. I noticed most of the Deja Vu moments in my life are a dream i had a few weeks earlier. I use Herbal Teas when i have trouble sleeping, They work most of the time but it also has to do with your mindset similar like placebo.

Chamomile, Kava, Tulsi, Ashwaghanda, Gotu kola, ect.. help me sleep well my (sleep and tea mixes) contain most of them.
Now if you are having nightmares and want more vivid, colorful, pleasant or even lucid dreams besides Chamomile, Mugwort and Calea zacatechichi(Dream herb) are known to be the best herbs that help for this.

He'll even tea made from cannabis is extremely relaxing when mixed with some milk or coconut oil.

  8. I get sleep paralysis too, but for some reason I only get it when I'm falling asleep.

  9. Mantikore nailed it. Our brains are beyond amazing and can manifest even the most vivid of apparitions or visions. It can take over your senses and make you believe you are in places your not. Here's something for you to try. Next time that happens, you seem conscious enough to recount everything, try and embrace it,control it. Allow it to materialize completely. Know that it is your imagination ONLY and tap into your self. You'll be that much stronger afterwards. Face that fear.

  10. I have a buddy who claimed to have seen a blue foggy glow dissapating into the ground when his brother was in sleep paralysis as he walked into the room. His brother said 'did you see it?!'.
    They both swear it.
    I dunno.

My ex from a long time ago said she used to get sleep paralysis too, an old ugly woman would sit on her chest and slow her breathing.
    She said it was terrifying.

  11. I've have 2 types of these on a regular basis but now that I think about it, since I've moved into this new home that I just purchased for the next 30 years, I haven't had any at all. Thankfully?
I've had the typical old hag on my chest. I started having those when I was about 15 pretty regularly to the point where I would go crawl into bed with my parents in the middle of the night once I snapped out of it....mind you I was a very mature 15 year old with a 17 yr old Bf who ultimately my parents started allowing spending the night because how crazy scared I was of the "Old hag"
(Bad idea for my parents to let him spend the night BTW cause I got pregnant lol but to my defense that's been our only child and we are still together yasss! )
Anyway the old hag is a non factor I started fighting that bitch or dude whatever he is because it happens so regularly for years that anytime that thing paralyzes me and stares at me I can hear my thoughts screaming at it loud as fuck and telling him to go fuck himself and a bunch of profanities...I think I learned how to beat him. Now the hag doeant come around as often. Except lately it had seemed as if he brought some of his stupid ass friends along and I would see them in the corners of the room also trying to intimidate me. They would be dressed in black out just black figures and the main one looks almost like a Little leprocaun with a stupid ass hat and all... It always feels like it's trying to pull me off or under the bed but none the less I fight back until he fucks off....

The other astroprojectile thing is something else...its evolved over the years but hasn't gone on as long as the old hag. I'll be half awake/asleep and I can walk about my house and no one is ever home I'm always alone...and I'll be watching TV (I can never remember what's on TV) or just start getting myself ready for work. It reminds me of the Insidious movie where they are in their same house but everything is so weird and creepy. Anyway it's gotten as far as once I woke up got myself ready and got in my car and started driving to work in my usual route and noticed how there was NO traffic and no cars on the road and I was almost late then I woke up and I was actually late for work lol idk maybe it's not even astroprojectile who knows but it feels so cool cause I'm in control of what I'm doing in my own surroundings... next time I'm going to drive to the mall or something and see how it looks.

    So yeah there's my experience.

  12. Exactly I faced the fear of the old hag and began telling it to fuck off and it's not nearly as intimidating as it was when I was younger... I kind of wait for it to come back now as a challenge.

  13. I'm curious as to why people see similar things.
I've heard the old lady from many different people of different cultures.
    Myth or reality?

  14. My "old hag" looks more like a demon/male and good face was grayed or bless blurred out and all he does is sits on my chest like an attempt to choke or suffocate me. Even when I'm in my side and that's when it looks more like a demon with a weird little top hat and he tries pulling me under the bed and I have to keep resisting and fighting back.

Edit: I have bad grammar guys I'm high and eating and watching TWD and on Facebook and GC at the same time right now :(

  15. If you guys have Netflix you should watch the nightmare, its a few people that have the same experiences that I have described as well as ruby. Sinister figures, demons, hags etc. Its very interesting. Most doctors say these figures and feelings are caused by stress but I know there is some sort of unknown trigger for me, since my paralysis happens out of the blue.

Its interesting now that you've moved ruby it doesn't happen. Maybe there was something oppressive in the house you stayed in.

  16. I used to get sleep paralysis real bad. It freaked me out so much till I found out what it was. Even when it happens occasionally now it still scares me and I know its not real. I still remember being real young and having something on my chest trying to scream and move but I couldn't, fuck that shit I could handle nightmares as a kid but sleep paralysis really fucked with my head.

  17. it's not astral projection it's your brain

i get sleep paralysis every now and then. sometimes it happens twice a week for a month, sometimes twice a month

usually starts with a loud popping noise followed by a slowly fading ringing sound like ZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzz........

tht's when the panic sets in, my body is frozen solid and my brain is fully awake. normally i always have full control of my emotions but when i become paralyzed i feel like if i dont get out of it ill be frozen like tht for a long, long time. maybe forever. dont know if it's a conscious thought, a delusion or my subconscious; but something tells me to do something fast or youre a goner

so i desperately try to move a finger or a toe to wake myself up, like op said. imagine being under 5 meters of thick mud and trying to move. but as soon as anything moves i come back to life

no idea if these episodes last a few seconds or a few minutes. it might just be a nightmare, although i feel so awake

im usually extremely drowsy when coming out of a state of paralysis and usually i fall back and to sleep quickly. and sometimes this happens several times in a row

never felt a presence in the room tho

  18. Wow. These stories gave me chills. Sounds terrifying. Good luck guys... I hope you folks figure out how to beat it. It sounds fucking horrible.

  19. What factors induce a person to have a sleep paralysis experience?

I know that sleeping on your back is a must, but surely it can't be the most important factor, so what is it? Stress? Insomnia?

I've never had such an experience, so that's why I ask.

  20. I always have vivid encounters with demons during sleep paralysis where I can hear them, see them, and feel them during the episodes and I don't even believe in demons. When I see them they have a terrifying appearance, when I hear them they speak to me or scream at me in a language I've never heard before, and when I feel them sometimes it's like an invisible person is on top of me pinning me down to my bed and I can't move, or sometimes a particular entity with a booming male voice makes an attempt at possession where I am struggling to keep the entity from entering my body though it has succeeded sometimes. I think what causes mine is that sometimes I start to dream before my brain falls asleep but I don't understand why my encounters are demonic in content being that I'm an agnostic and don't believe in them.
