Help Newbie gal wanting to grow

Discussion in 'First Time Marijuana Growers' started by S.ward0402, Jan 14, 2016.

  1. Okay! New to Grassxity and growing! I never really had a green thumb but never really tried. I am looking to grow some good herb in a small amount. It will be for personal use only and only me. I don't smoke with anyone and don't smoke more than 3 bowls a day.
I live in a house that has decently sized closets. My basement is a good area but I've recently notice mold spots on the walls.
    With that said..
    1) Are regular lights good to use? I've heard fluorescent lights are good.
    2) What are the best sites to order from? I live in the states.
    3) Can I just use a fan for the "air flow" if I use my closet?
    4) What are the basic "steps"? I've seen a lot online but there is so much information and differences that it gets a bit blurred.
    5) Anything else you'd like to add would be great!
    Thanks in advance! !

  2. You have to find what works best for you. Just because one way works for another doesn't mean follow them and do the same. Sounds to me like you need to research a little more before you start, but I'll help you out.

T5 florescent bulbs are good. 6500k veg and 2700k flower or 3 to 1 depending on plant stage.

Ebay is a good source for grow equipment along with hydroponic stores in your area. Seeds you can always use Seedsman, My favorite company. Never have I had a bad experience with them. Fast shipping to USA etc.

You can use any fan you desire as long as the fan blows across the top of the plant, but under the light to reduce heat stress and increase main stem strength. I suggest a oscillating fan from sunleaves. Ebay for 22$ :)

The rest is all up to you.

  3. I totally understand what you're saying about learning more! It's just so frustrating because almost every where I read has a different version on certain things. Not to mention, most of the sites are talking about yielding a shit load of bud. I'm not looking for that much. It's literally for myself and that's it. I just wanted to know if I really needed to spend crazy money on lighting, heating and air flow. Because I don't really have the extra money to spend on those things, especially because most sites are saying the prices are crazy! Either way, I really appreciate the reply and I'll be looking into those things. I haven't even ordered seeds so I'm very early in the process.

  4. A normal size closet should be plenty of space to grow one or two plants. But there is a WHOLE LOT OF STUFF you need to learn about before you even begin to attempt this. Definitely, since you're new to the whole thing, start off with growing in soil as a medium. It's just much easier to deal with for the new grower rather than hydro or other options. Read, read, read. Get in the new grower threads here and read till your eyes bug out. Then read in the grow setup threads the same way to get a better understanding of how a grow should be constructed and set up. There are two parts to doing this....the "veg" stage, taking your plant from seed or clone to the point where it's ready for flower, and the "flower" stage, which is budding the plant out for harvest. You need one light spectrum (usually CFLs) for veg and another light spectrum (hps, LED) for flowering. Before you can do anything without it being a total waste of your time and money, I suggest you get really prepared first and have some sort of basic understanding on how this is done. However, ANYBODY can do it!! But knowledge is your friend so get all of it you can before you even drop 1 seed or spend 1 dime. TWW

  5. There are lots of growing journals on here, I recommend you check them out. There are lots of great ones that will help you get started and guide you through the growing process.

  6. You see so many different ways to grow because weed is a hardy plant that survives with all kinds of abuse.

... I am also a small personal grower so I can help you out in scale.

I aim to smokd 2 ounces every three months, if I get 3 oz I'll be thrilled

The best advice I can give though is start now and get going.

I ordered from Nirvana several times and I've never had a problem.

The biggest question is this... all in, whats your start up budget.

  7. If your on a budget and growing for yourself only , go with the inexpensive with decent results.
Cfl bulbs are cheap easy to get and will get you good bud,
Go with bought soil, its easy cheap and will get you good bud, Just add some perlite and your good to go.
a small closet, a couple cfl bulbs with clamp light fixtures, a timer, and some basic foxfarm soil and
you'll have enough good bud for just you. Once you get a couple small grows under your belt you will know if you want to go bigger. generally a plant will take about 12 weeks or so full life cycle to get bud. so keep that in mind when starting your seeds, you may want to start a second set when your 6 weeks or so in so you can have bud the second time sooner.
Once your set up, do your reading on drying and curing, that makes a big difference in the quality of you're bud.
As they said we have all the info here in the city.
You can search cfl grows, or even just start in beginners.
If you guys need any additional help or something doesn't make sense send me a pm,
    Ill help you out.
Gluck on your favorite new hobby.. :smoke:

  8. 1. Regular incandescent lamps are useless for growing.. CFLs are better but a dead end so don't go very far down that road in my experience..
    2. Most sites both seeds and equipment do offer a stealth shipping option if you live in an cannabis un-friendly state..
How much you spend is more or less on how much you plan on growing.. Big lights in small spaces create lots of heat and that has to be removed so closet grows usually mean cutting a hole into the attic for exhausting that heat
Read, Read, Read and then ask a bunch of questions then go back and do more reading..
An organic soil will be simplest as it is usually is just water only and you won't have to learn a lot of advanced stuff to have good results.. Doesn't need PPM meters or PH up and down or much of anything really.. Water it and let the plant take what it needs when it needs them.. Way to simple for many growers but it suits my grow style just right

ITGs soil thread is a good place to start reading.. Keep in mind it's not rocket science or is the recipes set in stone.. A wide range of materials can be used to build a quality soil so if you can't find this amendment you can sub more of that one..
I got by my first couple of grows with just used Fox Farms Ocean Forest and a 50 pound sack of alfalfa pellets..
Start looking around the local Home Depot and garden centers but don't buy anything just yet..
We'll give you a basic list and talk about the various materials before you buy thus saving you wasting any money on questionable items..

Your only looking to grow a couple of plants to start with but don't buy any bagged potting soil as most of it is pure crap and not what you want..
Look over the Craigs List for your city.. Tons of used lights, hoods fans, tents and stuff for sale from people who couldn't make it work.. Do you have a Hydroponics store in town if so give it a visit but again just look don't buy..
    My 2 cents..

My first grow was with CFLs from Home Depot. I used "Feit Electric 6500k Daylight 42W CFLs". 8$ ea, but you can work your way up one bulb at a time. They also have 40W 2700k Bulbs for flowering.

Soil, I would go with MG Seed Starter Soil (3-5$) to germinate and Fox Farms Ocean Forest (18-20$ locally) for transplant.

Nutrients, I recommend adding dolomite lime to the soil mix. Helps with calcium deficiency especially during flowers. .5-1 tbsp per gal. Extra perlite (1 Cup Per Gal). Home Depot has Perlite 16$ for a huge bag.

If you don't have 22$ for a good oscillating fan I would advise getting a small fan from home depot "o2cool" 12$. Different Colors haha!

My First Grow was "White Widow" by Seedsman. Easy for beginners and I harvested 3oz. All CFLs.
Need any help feel free to message me.

    Good Luck!

  10. Hello sp33dy36, I wanted to know if I could issue a couple questions I'm a beginner at growing and I currently have a bin in my closet and I'm using 7 23w CFL's 2700k 1600lumens i'm using auto flower seeds from Nirvana.com which i've had 100% success rate on germinating them so far knock on wood lol I have a seedling that popped out for days ago, and I noticed yesterday that just the one tip of the leaf is just a tiny bit yellow on the tip I think I may have had the lights to close because it was hard to get them all even. But now they're pretty much all even now. they also gave me 10 free seeds which I germinated two of them and just put them in red cups which I'll post pictures of my grow bin this is just till I get a chance to buy this tent this week at Apollo.com. I also have Alaskan fish 5-1-1 which I don't know if I should use on my seedling if I started off with maybe just a teaspoon per gallon and then work my way up. Then when it starts flowering stop it? I've been watering it about every other day it's in a 3 gallon pot with just organic miracle grow soil if you could give me any advice at all because I really don't know much at all but I've been reading and reading and reading so anything that you may help me out and I would really appreciate it here's some pictures thank you very much[IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

  11. Yes it would be the first feed. Besides water of coarse, I just look to see what a TDS meter was lol, I'm definitely a beginner even though I've had plants in the past but that was a long time ago. But I will get one at Walmart or online

  12. Sorry I hit send by accident. I just finished fixing up my box a little bit until I get a tent hopefully this week I could put right in my closet and give me plenty of space. The Alaskan fish is 5-1-1 do you think I should use that because I did just add a little bit more lights to the box. I'm germinating another auto flower once it's germinated would I be able to put it in the same 3 gallon pot or would I want to separate it into another pot?

  15. Also about your pots... best to stick to one plabt per pot or they will compete (this is a subject of debate). Putting a young seedling in with a mature plant is a recipe for disaster.

I usually use nutes every other feeding.... or every third.

Its not about strict numbers... you've got to look at the plant.

In soil... dont water until it Wilts... dont feed until it yellows...

... react to what the plant tells you. .. dont just do something because it's scheduled.

  16. That's what I thought not to stick another seed in the same pot but I just wasn't 100% sure I appreciate all your information and feedback thank you

  17. I highly disagree with waiting to water until the plant wilts. If in flower if waiting to water until wilted can snap branches. Personally, I would say put your finger 1/2 inch into the soil and if dry water her. Also, you can avoid issues like over or under feeding by grabbing MG seed starter and adding nutrients to the soil.

Starter Soil Mix To Use For Autos:
MG Seed Starter Mixed 50/50 W/ Perlite
EWC - 1 Cup Per Gal (Won't Burn Seedlings)
Dolomite Lime - .5 TSP Per Gal

That should help get you close to two weeks before she yellows, asking for food!
