What if we dont live in 3 dimensions, or 4 dimensions?

Discussion in 'Science and Nature' started by Sc0pe, Jan 12, 2016.

  1. some people say we live in 4 dimensions, 3 dimensions of space, and one of time.
but what if we live in Pi dimensions? 3 of space and .14159265359.... a never ending number of time, which is why time always flows forward?

and 99% of you just didnt understand what the fuck i just said

  2. It's a possibility!

  3. That's interesting. I'd argue that we live in 3.5 dimensions. 3 of space, and one direction of time, so one half dimension of time. But who knows

  4. I think time is not a dimension.

And wasn't there mention of hidden folded dimensions in our own dimensions?

And then I hear about the universe might be the remnant of a collapsed 4th dimensional star.

    Makes my mind ache.

  5. 99% of us didn't understand it because it didn't make sense and you didn't explain your idea

  6. This should be philosophy, not science. Science doesn't give a flying fuck about "what if"

  7. Really? What if you were wrong?

  9. Jokes aside, I think there are different kinds of "what ifs".

    What if elephants could fly?

What if we could alter gravity?

  10. pi isn't infinite so your logic of tine always flowing forward makes no sense.

Humans cannot calculate the exact fraction that is pi, but its still a finite number.

  11. Yes definitely. I relate OP's question to the former, and not the latter.

  12. is pi really an unpredictable number to say because it is infinite, it is a fixed number aswell

  13. exactly.

Its like when people try to say its impossible to cross a room because you will infinitely have to go half way.

But clearly we can cross a room.

Clearly pi is a finite number.

  14. maybe finite, but even if it goes on forever it is still the same fixed number.

This sounds like poorly adopted Zeno's paradox.

By poorly I mean it's not appropriate to apply infinity from Zeno to infinity in Pi. Zeno's paradox is why infinite series can result in a finite number. Pi, by it's definition is a very infinite number.

It has been my contention that pi is indeed infinite because it doesn't relate to reality. For pi to relate to reality and be infinite we would have to posit that the resolution of reality is also infinite. With any curve, if you zoom in close enough it will be jagged. Pi is a good enough approximation for most applications but still illusory.

Kind of like saying a true line is infinite. Sure, as a concept, but if the universe isn't infinite, it doesn't apply to reality.

  18. essentially, the reason we cannot calculate pi is because there is no such thing as a circle.

Like you said. Zoom in far enough and you will realize this

    -Yuri
we cannot prove pi is infinite

Aside from the fact that it's proven transcendental and all transcendentals are uncountably infinite. [IMG]

I know it looks infinite but it isn't at all. Adding up an infinite number of
half distances you would think should give an infinite distance as the sum. But it
doesn"t it gives a finite sum, all these half distances add up to 1.
