Cheap yellow PH reader/pH up down HELP

Discussion in 'Hydroponic Growing' started by TheWeedArborist, Dec 31, 2015.

  1. I bought a cheap yellow pH tester off eBay. Can anyone please give me some info if these work. And also how do I use it? It says to calibrate it with the tool and submerse in water and wait for reading. If the reading is around 7.2 with tap water - how do I know how much pH down to put in? I tested a bit in a cup and just a tiny bit made it go way down into the 5's.

2nd grow - first attempt at bucket bubbleponics with 2 x 125w cfl engineered to the one reflector. I made my bucket from a dark blue cooler and just 1 200mm net pot with reflector tape over the top of the cooler/esky which was white. I'm growing in hydroton and 1 inch rockwool cubes.

  2. You need to buy calibration solutions to calibrate the tester. I have 7.0 and 4.0 solutions. Put a little solution in a shot glass or something similar, immerse the end of the pen in the 7.0 solution and when the reading stabilizes you turn the little screw till it reads 7.0
Repeat with the 4.0 solution. The pen is now calibrated.

Ph up and down are quite strong so very little is needed to change the ph of your res

  3. Ok I have the up and down in dry powder or crystal form. I will give it a go. Is distilled water necessary? The instructions are in really bad English. I can barely understand them. Haha. Thanks for your continued support mate!

  4. You need to calibrate, Google Amazon ph calibration fluid, it will be 2 separate bottles of solution , a 4.01 solution and a 7.00 solution, they also sell storage solution and cleaning solution, I just store it in the 4.01 solution and you need to make sure the tip ( bulb) does not dry out,
Mine was almost 4.00 off when I bought it and yours is most likely useless without a proper calibration, there are a lot of videos on YouTube on how to properly calibrate your tester ( they are all pretty much the same, the cheap ones anyway) best of luck and happy growing

  5. The best thing you can do with that thing is throw it in the trash. IF it works at all, you can bet it won't work that way long. I tried to use one of the cheap ones back in the beginning because I was too cheap to spend the money on a good one, and boy did I pay for it with unhealthy plants. I realized after about 2 months that the thing hadn't been working right for a long time and I was the one who would lose out in the end. Go ahead and order yourself a real pH tester that is water proof and of decent quality. It's going to cost you $60+, but is totally worth it. BlueLab makes the best ones out there, but there are other options that are a little less expensive than theirs. pH values of any liquids going into your plants determine whether your plants will be healthy or not, so I definitely would want something I could depend on. Good luck! TWW

  6. I use the ph test solution, it never lets me down.

  7. Yeah they are plenty accurate for what we use them for. As its new you are unlikely to need to worry about calibration for a while. I check mine now and then and its never needed adjusting. I've had my current one about 2 years.

You switch it on, dip the tip in the water and read the display. Easy as that.

I use these to check calibration, but don't check very often. Ph 7 and ph 4. The other one is for calibrating my EC meter

  8. I will try again today but I think its a POS. The readings are all over the place and its really feels like a cheap POS too. I will study the book one more time and give it a go and post my results. Just currently did my first pH down and the table I have it only goes down to 6.5 so I added a tiny bit more and presumed that would take it to around 6.2. This is the pH test solution. And I found it to be much more accurate. But will keep trying different methods. Will be investing in better quality digital one eventually.

  9. I guess it could be faulty, but mine has worked perfectly for 2 years and the one I had before that worked for 8 years until I broke the glass sensor

  10. If you stand by them I will try until I am satisfied ..

  11. What problem is it giving you exactly?

  12. I just don't know how to use it properly I guess. It says use distilled water and the right temperature ect otherwise will affect pH. I'm about to get up now so I'll have a solid look and post outcome. If it works I'll back them.

The distilled water is for when you are calibrating it. Have you adjusted the screw on the back? If you haven't touched that, then the meter shouldn't need calibrating.

All you do is turn it on, dip the tip in to the nutrient solution, and read the display.

Generally it's not worth worrying about the temperature. It doesn't effect it that much

  14. I bought it 2 years ago. I have fiddled with the screw. I only use tap water so if i absolutely won't use distilled .. Will this thing definitely not work?

  15. Will it not work? Do you mean tap water with calibrating it? It's worth buying calibrating fluid if you don't have distilled water for calibrating.

If you have adjusted the screw too far you may have broken it. I'd just spend the £4 and buy a new one

  16. Haha maybe but I don't think i broke it. I am fairly cautious. Will post reaaults.

  17. had the same one a year

  18. if you don't want to buy calibrating fluid then you can fill a mug with hot water and add table salt until no more will dissolve in it. Let it completely cool down and that fluid will be exactly PH 7. So dip the meter in there and adjust the screw until it displays 7.

But dicking about the screw can cause you to be forever needing to recalibrate

  19. It works to a point, u have to calibrate it but its good for about one and a half grows, I bought it to, but on my second grow I upgraded to a Hanna pH checker, best investment

  20. Thanks for all the replys I'm just using the fluid test now and match it to the color key. Its working pretty good so far but would consider a better quality electric one for more precise results.
