Is there a such thing as fim/topping too Early?

Discussion in 'Plant Training' started by bagseed mcgee, Dec 21, 2015.

  1. Has anyone experimented with topping at various stages? I have a small plant that's 2 weeks into veg I'm just kinda experimenting with a few small plants until I can build a proper pc grow box. Also I don't want to mess up any good seeds. So I've got some bag seed and I want to start messing around with lst and hst until I find a method that works best for me. My goal is a short bushy plant around 15" tall so I want to maximize the yield if possible. BUT this has been my baby for two weeks I don't want to shock it or even worse, kill it.

Sorry for the camera phone pics

Any advice that could help a beginner out would be much appreciated

  2. Should I at least wait until the new growth does it's thing??

  3. If you can get a clean cut, go for it...

    (I don't know shit)

  4. I'm seriously contemplating it. Just want to know what I'm doing before I rushed into and murder this poor little thing

  5. So I went with the FIM method for this one I'll see what it does.

So in an effort to stay on the topic of this thread and hopefully to help someone with the same question, I'll share what I've read. So basically it sounds like most people have waited until 3-5 nodes have developed. Since FIM/topping's purpose is not only to multiply the main colas. But to focus on lower growth, it's beneficial to wait until the area where the side branches meet the main stem has started its new leaves. It supposed to focus the plants energy on these areas and allow more light to shine on the lower growth. So IMO it's up to you to decide wether your plant can handle the stress or not. As long as it's past the 3rd node that is.

But anyone with a few more seasons under their belt who could shed some light on the subject please hop in on this. Any input is appreciated

  8. Hi! Let me tell you the story of Little Kim. Little Kim is my lemon kush that almost died from the beginning. I did not chuck her. Why is it that I tell you of a seedling that almost died? Check her out. :)

This seedling almost died. Started wilting, but I left it.

I allowed it to grow like normal.

It basically split itself in two.

You can see two heads/branches forming.

    I let her be herself.

    Growing nicely. Yea, little burn.

Few days ago. Maybe a week

    This seedling self-topped? Self-fimmed?

Either way, the dead leaves on top forced her to grow sideways around the dead area. This tells me that a precise cut could possibly have the same effect.....??

This is in the first week, maybe 10 days.

I'm sorry I didn't take closer shots of the dead zone where this all took place. I expected her to die, so I only took a few.

    Hopefully this helps somewhat. :)

  9. I'm so sorry. Here are the pictures that should have been up there.

  10. Dude that's awesome certainly a resilient little plant. I didn't think they would recover as a fresh seedling. Looks like it's doing pretty well now

  11. She is doing well, thanks. :)

I've used some extreme lst on her and her trunk is twisting around itself. It's pretty neat actually.

    Very very resilient plant.

I decided to show you to hopefully help answer your question.
I didn't actually experiment, mine was an accident. Like I said previously, it happened in the first to second week.
If you have some bagseed, experiment at different time frames of the seedlings lives. Cut/fim at one week, two, etc. I haven't seen anyone do that yet, maybe some of the more experienced growers could better answer that or direct you to a good thread on it.
    Either way, good luck! :)

  12. Thanks Napalm. The stem on that thing looks huge. Have you chopped it yet? Looks like a decent yield

  13. Not a problem. :)

No, I have not chopped her yet. She is still in veg right now. I'll be doing some more lst to her in a day or two.
I'm not flipping her for another month. At least. B)
Hopefully it will be a good yield, but that's a while away still. :D

  14. Hope it goes well..I bet it goes crazy after another month of growth and lst

So this is lights on for the 3rd day after the FIM. I started to tie down the main stem last night with around six hours left I also waited until it had been sittin awhile after I watered it yesterday before I attempted to bend it

  16. Heres day 6 after the FIM
Day 19 of total veg time
I finally noticed two new sets of colas today they're very small so something didn't go right with the FIM I think. Also I made a new light fixture today to get a little more out of my lights

  17. I just got done topping some clones I've had in som FFOF so about 5 days or so now. The actual age is unclear I'd like to think almost 3 weeks now? I just did my first FIM. And hoping I did it right as well. I'll be hoping for some new growth when I get home in a few hours
