Discussion in 'Movies' started by *guest, Dec 18, 2015.

  1. Surely I can't be the only one here who's seen it so far?!

Spoiler warning in the title so if you haven't seen it yet gfto :p

I loved it personally, whats everyone else think?

  2. Felt like a proper Star Wars film!

Physical sets, lots of call-backs and nods to the originals, amazing new cast, a highly attractive Jedi, great villain and incredible arial fights!!!

  3. I keep seeing people complaining like "it wasn't fresh and edgy!!"

Edgy? Have you people seen Star Wars? It's literally a space opera, you go into it knowing exactly what you're going to get and unless you're watching the prequels, they fucking deliver that.

I've seen it and am still heart broken about what happens to you know who.

  5. I knew you know who was gone before the conversation even started....they aren't going to switch the new bad guy to the light side that easy. Harrison Ford killed it in this one though. Overall fantastic movie, special effects, and acting. Definitely dig how it was "old school style", but kylo ren is a whiney little bitch imho.

  6. I saw a spoiler about this before I even saw the film... Grrrr!!!

Didn't make the scene any less emotional though!

  7. Same i was hoping it wasn't true.

  8. Oh man this movie was so dope. The plot was predictable top to bottom but that didn't really make it bad; I felt like they really wanted to play it safe and not do anything too crazy with the story (yet). Great reawakening of the franchise, but it'll be interesting to see what they do with episodes 8 and 9 since they can't keep recycling plot points.

The visuals were fantastic, every set looked so much more like the original trilogy than the prequels, and there was so little CGI that the CGI monster that attacked Han and the group looked very out of place. Rey and Finn absolutely killed it, I think Rey has the potential to be a total badass and I'm really looking forward to seeing her progression through the next movies.

At the end of the day it was GOOD. Anything other than that would've been a disaster. It's so nice to have new Star Wars movies to talk about that are actually similar to the original trilogy.

  9. The script was a little busy. JJ needed to slow down and provide exposition for the audience. Lucas is Lucas, but at least he took the time to flesh out the worlds his characters inhabit before throwing them into action. And the second half of the film had some weird inconsistencies. How is Rey able to use a Jedi mind trick or defeat Kylo Ren if she's never had any formal Jedi training? It took Luke three films, with training from Yoda, to become as powerful as Rey is by the end of VII. And why does Leia hug Rey after returning from Starkiller base? They had zero character interaction up to that point...I also think Finn kinda gives off a Scrappy Doo vibe. They don't give him much to do, other than providing a comic foil for Rey.

Overall though, I liked it. It's nowhere near as bad as the prequels, and Harrison Ford is as good as ever as Han. He elevates every scene he's in. I'm looking forward to seeing what Rian Johnson does with VIII. Hopefully he's allowed to branch off on his own, creatively.

  10. I like the movie... But Han Solo's son... he looks not like the universal evil... he looks more like a nerd....

  11. I loved the film. Found myself caring more about the new characters like Rey, Finn, and Kylo Ren more than I thought I would. I was sad to see Han Solo die, but I can understand why they did it for the purpose of the story. And it was nice to see that maybe Rey and Chewie would be a new team.

It was refreshing, after the prequels, to see actual environments and extras playing stormtroopers rather than CGI sets and infinitely expendable robot stormtroopers. There was even actual humor, like when those two stormtroopers changed direction after hearing Kylo Ren throwing a tantrum, And it's a funny Easter egg to know that it was Daniel Craig playing the stormtrooper that Rey uses the Jedi mind trick on.

I thought it was very well done, and it captured the spirit of the original trilogy. The characters were three-dimensional, the pacing of the plot was even and kept me interested, there were nods to the earlier movies that casual fans can appreciate... I plan on seeing it again in a few weeks when the crowds have thinned out a little bit.

  12. This was a very safe film. I don't appreciate safe. Also, in one of the scenes, you can hear Harrison Ford's character call Kylo Ren "Ben". The significance of this is pretty daunting, since you can bet Luke would want to name his son after his fallen master.

Overall, like i said, very safe film. We can see where they are taking it. I thought it was a good like.. Action movie? I guess.. But the story was just not for me.

My friends and I are joking Kylo Ren is the Emo side of the Force...Just sitting in his room alone listening to Darth Metal all day. I did think the movie was awesome though overall

  14. Everyone is asking why Rey is able to do all this shit like mind tricks and go toe to toe with Kylo even though he's an experienced fighter and she's only held a lightsaber and has no training. That stuff sort of gets a pass for me I guess since she obviously is in touch with the force. Sorta deus ex machina but whatevs.

The only thing I dislike about the movie is how similar it is to A New Hope.

Also, why does the Empire always put trenches and tunnels leading to all the major weakpoints. Has the Empire not learned from their past mistakes that giant spherical weapons usually don't end up well for them?

Overall stoked. My favorite part was Luke turning around and the drunken bum look he had on his face.

Movie was a joke. Seriously terrible. Every step and line was predictable. Felt even less like Star Wars than the prequels. Just a giant cash grab.

  16. I think the original "Vader is actually Luke's father" plot twist has put in a lot of people's minds that these films are always supposed to be filled with big reveals and false identities and should be wildly unpredictable. If you take A New Hope as a standalone film, it's completely predictable. It follows the Hero's Journey formula to the letter...the call to adventure, refusal of the call, supernatural aid, crossing the threshold, etc.. These stories have been told millions of times. The key to what makes it interesting is the personal touches you give the characters, setting, and atmosphere.

Yes, the movie is a cash grab. But to compare The Force Awakens to the prequels unfavorably is insane. Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Padme, and Anakin Skywalker were cardboard cutouts compared to the characters in the latest film. And predictable? We know that Anakin Skywalker is going to turn into Darth Vader, and we know it's going to happen by the end of the third film. There's no suspense. The prequels are the set-up to a punchline we've already heard, so they tried to dazzle the audience with CGI nonsense and tightly-choreographed lightsaber duels that looked more like a stage show than a battle. Poorly-executed humor and romance, etc... They were abysmal.

They did a lot of things right with the storytelling in The Force Awakens<span class="redactor-invisible-space">. Rey and Finn are outsiders to the whole Resistance thing at the beginning, so the expository dialogue can be worked into the script without seeming heavy-handed. The Kylo Ren/Han Solo dynamic is introduced casually; they didn't try to force another Vader/Luke surprise that many people would see a mile away. They made a conscious effort to avoid the grandiose CGI environments that felt sterile and distracting. And they followed a safe but effective formula for establishing the characters and giving them motivation. It serves as a fine first act to a three-part story. </span>

    <span class="redactor-invisible-space"></span>
<span class="redactor-invisible-space">I do feel it wouldn't be getting labeled derivative if they hadn't made the new superweapon just a larger Death Star. But it didn't bother me quite enough to ruin the movie for me.</span>

  17. I really enjoyed it. I was a HUGE Star Wars fan as a kid, member of the Lucasfilm fanclub, subscriber to the Marvel Star Wars comic, had almost all the toys, etc. And over the years I read some of the EU stuff, played every game, and all that. I was bitterly disappointed in 1999, and each prequel was a little better. I liked them OK because they were Star Wars, but they didn't feel like Star Wars at all. This did. One of the main reasons why it felt so much like Star Wars was also one of my issues with it, it was a total rehash of Ep. IV. To the point I was figuring out plot points way ahead of time just by running the first film through my mind. What they didn't take from the original trilogy, they lifted from the EU. So it wasn't the fun new adventure I was hoping for, just spinning the wheels of the franchise, but they did it in a very entertaining way. I took issue with some of the things they did, or didn't do, but I still left the theater happy. Compared to when I left TPM confused and angry, I'd say that's a huge improvement.

  18. I thought it was completely epic! A perfect continuation to the originals... The Force repeats and balances itself... so should the films...

Rey, if not already, will become the most powerful forceweilder in the history of that Galaxy far, far away...

She didn't need training in anything to realize Kylo Ren has an inferiority complex to Darth Vader... Obviously he is not as strong as either of them... all she used was simple women's intuition... even Han told Finn this when he said women always find out the truth. ;)

She always had Faith in the Force and knew of Luke... especially since he has been communicating with her her entire life...

Because Luke is Rey's father! Some might think it's Han and Leia, but to me it seems pretty obvious that they would've said something when they met...

Some think maybe Luke brainwashed them into forgetting her... but that would take more explaining than her being Luke's daughter.

Of course she got a big hug from Leia, her aunt... they can feel that in the Force. And Han connected with her so easily because he saw Luke in her... I think Leia knows, but wants Rey to find out who her father is in person... and that's why she was the only one who could find Luke. At the very least, she is a Skywalker... or she was immaculately conceived like Anakin... Either way, she's the baddest broad in the Galaxy!

I can't wait for Episode VIII!

  19. But I got some questions...

Is Luke Rey's father? I'm guessing yeah... I've heard Kylo Ren calls her cousin in a video game... but that's not necessarily truth... or was she immaculately conceived like Anakin?

But first, who is Finn? Will he become a Jedi? Was the awakening the Supreme Leader spoke of about him? And the Jedi as a whole? Or is he just along for the ride trying to survive... like Han Solo?

But more importantly... who was the old guy in the village that Ren killed that woke Finn up? I think it's Obi Wan who never really died... some think it maybe Boba Fett...

But I think it was Obi Wan and since he died, it had to lead to there being a new Jedi to be Luke's apprentice... so Finn woke up just to save Poe so they could crash on Jakku to find Rey, who will become the new Jedi heroine.

Why did Ben turn to the Dark Side? Who the fuck is Snoke? Is it Vader who never really died... or the guy who trained Emperor Palpatine?(can't remember his name.) Or is he Vader's father?

The film does a great job of leaving you with questions... and they can pretty much do whatever they want from here... another masterpiece from Lucasfilms...

  20. Kylo and Finn, 2 of the weakest adversaries in all movie history. I was waiting for them to start crying and hugging. Talking about peace and love. Personally I was disappointed.

Rest of the movie was cool
