    Check it out, yo

As you can see, the images speak for themselves. I've got some big beef tomato, jalapeno and white maize seedlings (to be soaked ground up for tortillas and nachos) going under a single 24w CFL cool daylight lamp.

I leave the curtains open to let indirect sunlight in, and also the light in my ceiling is 24w CFL.. so together they all help the seedlings grow.

Seedlings grow beautifully and germinate in no more than 3-4 days on average, even the capsicum and tomato seeds, which I used to consider hard to grow.

I'm using quality seed raising mix with coco-fibre.. which cost me no more than $5 - the price that you'd pay for a single tomato seedling at the store. Guess I'll never be going back to store-bought seedlings.

I'm in love with CFLs. Cool-daylights are very good for vegetative, leafy-green growth - which makes me wonder whether I should start growing some of my vegetables indoors, especially Pak Choy, which I've found to be extremely hard to grow in my climate, as it goes to flower at the slightest fluctuation in weather patterns.

Also, capsicum plants would be a good candidate, too. Capsicum plants are some of the most fragile lot I have ever grown. A young pepper plant can get totally raped by 2 aphids overnight. Extremely hard to grow. They also hate strong winds - and I happen to live in one of the windiest countries in the world. No wonder peppers are so expensive in the supermarket - which is a shame, cause I love pizza.

I've also got a tray with catnip seeds that I recently planted, but only 1 of them has germinated so far, and it's too small for the camera. Will post more updates on it soon.

Just an update on my backyard.

This is how my seedlings are currently doing in life. The tomatoes are being grown in a mixture of compost and clay soil.. which seems to have worked magically to produce fat, green and bushy plants.

Growing weed alone has taught me heaps about gardening.

btw - I already have about a basket-ball full of strawberries in my freezer, ready to be used in the production of strawberry-flavoured apple cider. I think I'll probably be eating my strawberries from now on, considering how much of an effort it's been. lol

  5. I just planted some tomatoes seeds myself. I'm following your route except I have a old 200 watt MH light that has been rigged up to work.

Long story short I'm going to watch what you are doing here to learn!
