Curious about grow conditions for dispensaries near me? (Organic? Pesticides? Etc)

Discussion in 'Marijuana Consumption Q&A' started by TotallyToked, Nov 19, 2015.

  1. Is there anywhere I can look (e.g., when browsing on Leafly) for details about the source of the products being sold?

E.g., whether that dispensary grows it itself (I'm in MA, not sure if they have to grow it themselves?), whether they used any pesticides (is it legal for them to do so?), etc.
I could of course call and ask, but they could say whatever they want...

  2. Ask the dispensary where their bud comes from. If they don't know where and how the medicine that they provide comes from, I wouldn't give them my business.

sure but they could just say they grow it themselves even if they don't... Though I doubt they'd so that.
I'm more worried that they would just say its organically grown if asked, regardless of whether it is actually organic.

I.e., is there any regulation around this? Does any external party inspect the grow area ever? Or is it just the word of the growers?

  4. Talk with the disp and the growers if possible.

Most will be proud of their soil mix and pest control measures.

  5. Some grows are totally organic and use natural pesticides and over fertilize late into the grow. There is really no sure fire way to know.

If it's that big of a deal you do like I do and grow your own. Dispensaries grow for profit and speed. You can't do that without cutting corners no matter how good the intention is. They over fertilize and over dry (to avoid mold in storage this is the simplest way to avoid that) on a regular basis.

I'm not sure if you get my point but even if they grow 100% natural it doesn't mean you are not getting weed loaded with fertilizer and natural toxins. Personally I rather have good properly grown, never sprayed with toxins (natural or not) and properly cured weed that was flushed before harvest even if they used store bought fertilizer over what is grown in 99.999999% of those "organically grown" dispensaries.

  6. Not quite following you...

    1) growing myself not an option.

    2) what do you mean by over-fertalized? I'm not at all familiar with growing things... From the context it sounds like it increases yield (otherwise why would they do it?), but presumably has some detrimental effect?
What is the downside? More toxins while smoking it? (Why? Doesn't the plant convert fertilizer into its planty parts anyway?)

    3) So I should assume all dispensaries use pesticides? If so, do they at least wash the buds before setting them to dry? Or is everyone who doesn't grow their own always smoking large amounts of pesticides?

    4) what is the detriment of over drying? (It seems like I'd get more for my money since they sell by weight... Why do I care if it has less moisture?)
Is there anything I can do to re-hydrate? I've heard of sticking little bits of, say, apple in with the buds to keep them moisturized...

  7. Too bad about the growing because not only will you save a ton of money you will know what is in your weed.

Too much fertilizer too late into the grow leaves fertilizer in the buds you will be smoking. Not healthy for you at all. Crackling and popping while smoking is a sign of fertilizer overload and lack of flushing the plant before harvest. But most of the time you will never know. Whatever is in the plant at harvest is what you will be smoking later. Same reason I add a small amount of molasses to my water the last week of grow.

Improper curing is bad in so many ways and can ruin your smoke. Too quick and too much drying is common. Rehydration sounds all nice but it won't change harsh weak bud into properly cured bud right away. Loss of strength and a harsh smoke only only one of which can be corrected. Rehydration and time will make the smoke much smoother but most people will not buy enough at a time to correct that.

Could it not matter to you? Sure. Most people smoke poorly cured weed either off the streets or from a dispensary and could care less. It will work it just won't be the best.

My experience in New Mexico is that demand far outweighs the supply so there is a constant pressure for dispensaries to get product out. You can only grow so many plants per store so you can easily see the trap dispensaries are in. They sell everything they grow so if they grow more and cure it quickly instead of properly means more money.

I grow and supplement my grow during my "off season" at a dispensary. If I get harsh shit I move it to the back of my humidor and let it sit for a month or so.

Ps do not put apples or orange peels in your smoke unless you are about to smoke the entire contents of whatever container it is in real soon. Use boveda packs in a mason jar they are safe and will not mold or contaminate your smoke. Otherwise buy a humidor and a digital humidifier like my set up. There are plenty of other ways but my way is the simplest. My buds are slightly sticky and soft a year after harvest and smooth. That is the way they should be from the dispensary but if they delivered them that way customers would have mold in their weed from improper storage all the time.
