How to get rid of a lot of old potting soil ?

Discussion in 'Gardening' started by gardeningheaven, Nov 8, 2015.

  1. I have a this huge tractor tire i use for growing its full of my old container soil .I don't know what to do ,so i can reuse the tire to grow winter lettuce in

  2. Empty it out before you plant anything else in that soil. All the chemicals used to spur our plants along have made that soil pretty darn hot. I've never been able to grow anything with it once it's been through a run for MJ. I tried every way in the world to make use of it and finally just gave up after it continued to burn everything I planted in it, and started outlining the edge of our yard with it. It's a great weed barrier. LOL Let me know if you come up with anything!! TWW

  3. Im going to move the whole tractor tire .I just need the tire i can't move it . I guess im just going to layer out all the dirt in low spots on my yard too .but the old potting soil is knotted up with roots in a very tight ball. Iv'e spread small amounts of potting soil on my yard, before an it blended in when grass regrew .But damn its so much to deal with

I'm all for recycling and saving the planet, even your back yard..?
turn it over bigtime with a shovel depending how old it is, water it very well

re amend with whatever s handy, horse, pig, chicken, goat poo
allow to 'cook' ..this will save you bigtime on soil costs
many guys in your situation reuse, and top up each year

for $20.00.? take a sample to your local soil scientist

or hort. school to get a reading and work from there

or you can give it to the little old ladies in your 'hood'..?

  5. You can reuse potting soil - the same way farmland can be reused to grow crops.

Just gotta mix it with compost, and you're set.

  6. old perlite could contain pathogens needs to be filtered though before composting i would think .I heard that in a article about a greenhouse farmer woman had said that about perlite .

If you're only using a small amount of potting mix for small containers - just pop it in the microwave, or in the oven. That's what I did with for my marijuana pots to get rid of insects - it worked.

If it's for large garden beds, it has enough space to breathe I guess.. and I'd just treat it like you would a regular garden.

  9. what vostok said..

just add some organic amendments to it, and reuse it.

been growing in the same pots of soil for quite a while now.. it only gets better.
