This is the grow journal to answer the big questions, LED vs. hps, hydro vs soil.

I am not saying other methods don't work, I just remember the questions running through my head when I was starting my first grow. I hope this will help the newbs like myself and give some light to alternative grow methods for experienced growers.

I believe we are at the point in technology where LEDs have surpassed traditional lighting as for cost efficiency. The problem is which LEDs can match quality of HPS. This journal is to show that!

I'm running the two most ADVANCED LED lights on the market. I started with the 650 XML with 4 clones, after expanding I bought another LED. I was 100% satisfied with the original but I was able to get a discount on the solar storm and now I can see the difference in a full spectrum (veg) and white light (veg) LED.

Here's my shEit!! Comment, like, critique. Let's make this a great grow journal for all the community!

Light: advanced LED 650 XML diamond series, California light works solar storm 880

Design: 5x8x7 gorilla grow tent (don't waste your money on any other brand, the quality is unrivaled)

Exhaust: vortex s-line 8 inch hooked up to a can 150 (completely odorless), oscillating fan (buy cheap China made for this, I spent too much )

Intake: active with 6inch duct fan 225cfm

Grow method: oxygen pot system (ebb and flow), 8 sites (very satisfied with this company so far)

Media: 70% clay pebbles, 30% readygro coco by botanicare.

Feeding: daily (pH approx 6, ppm approx 450)

Res: Aqua flakes A/B, be one, roots excellurator, drip clean, recharge (best soil microbial), cal/mag (using RO)

Foliar: base nutes, multi zen, NUTs, be one, silica

Plants: 2 gorilla glue #4 and 2 J1 about 11 weeks from cutting both have been fimed and topped (having good results from XML 650). 4 free ambrosia fem seedlings from oaseeds about 22 days from first sprout. They were under a 200w black star, finally got the 880 solar storm up yesterday.

Here are pics of where I am at today. Prior temps have been 80-85, with the solar storm temps jumped to 97!! I cranked the AC on and have it in the high 80s. Definitely a lot hotter than the diamond series but EXTREMELY bright. Looking forward to the final results! 2. I'll take more photos without the LED spectrum affecting the appearance. Hopefully by tonight.

  3. Hello everyone! here is the update to my LED grow journal using the Solar Storm and Diamond Series XML.

Right before my original post I was having some nutrient lockout/burn happening. I flushed them and dropped my ppm to 450, with this I was able to feed 1-2 times per day. After doing this for about 7 days and noticing no burning but the discoloration was continuing I decided to increase my PK which seems to be working great! Running my ppm about 750 and doing about 8-10 floods per week.

I have started LST on my larger plants. They have all been topped and fimmed, too. Anything else I can be doing to increase yields? Going to put them in flower in two weeks, once the babies are bigger : )

As for the babies, I am waiting until they grow about 2 more inches to top them. Is it too early to LST?

Update to the new Solar Storm 880: temps were cool last week, which made it easier to handle. I have to keep my room (which the tent is inside) at 77 degrees to keep the relative temp (inside tent) around 86. The SS increases my temps a lot, but nothing that is too hard to handle. Its definitely one of the hotter LEDs, but if one cannot handle the temp this light puts off then you probably shouldn't be growing because temps are unpredictable at anytime during the grow cycle, mother nature can add more heat than this! I have noticed the babies are responding well to it, growth rate is absolutely insane! The Oxygen pot system has helped with the growth too. Roots are exploded everywhere!!

  5. Great job looking good. I was gonna get the 880 but I got one of the Kind K5 xl1000, satisfied so far but still really like the 880. Who makes those buckets?

  6. Thanks doode! How do you like the kind? I saw that and though it is very comparable to my 650 XML diamond series by advanced.

The entire ebb and flow system is by oxygen pot systems, I like these a lot! The inner bucket is mesh, like the smart pot so when the flood is done and drain kicks in there's tons of oxygen flow to the roots. I'll post a few root pics soon

  7. Some pics of the amnesia. Topped two of them yesterday. I also added Co2 excited to see the difference. Throwing these 8 into flower on Saturday. Prop 215 compliant.

  8. Looking great my man! I looked up those buckets, I really like them for the size. When I set up my 8'x8' this week I am getting some of them instead of the 2 gallon ones I have.

  9. As far as my light and how I like it, so far its okay but did have to send one back cause my first one came defective. Was it shipping? I don't know but other than that so far my ladies seem to be loving it. I am going to build some Cree CXB3590 Cobs for my 8'x8' cause I want to see how they are performing. I wish I didnt have to worry about Heat issues cause I would love to use 9 600watt HPS bulbs for my tent but I hear those. Cobs are giving them a run for there money!

  10. Here are some pics from a few days ago, i believe 3 days after flowering. I will be going in to tie some stuff down. I have about 30-35 inches of vertical height left for these to grow. Any recommendations besides tying down? I am starting to worry, hopefully in a good way.

Heat has somewhat been an issue, with higher than usual temps in my area as with the more intense flowering. I have been able to cool it, but very inefficiently. Two exhaust fans are coming in, one should work - but just to be safe! 725 cfm s-line is not powerful enough to exhaust the heat from TWO LEDs the 650 xml (618w actual) and solar storm 880 (650-680w actual). The solar storm definitely seems brighter to the human eye! Extremely intense..! The Diamond series, however offers a broader spectrum of lighting. It will be very interesting in final yield with the differences in these lights. Only time will tell, then I will be able to say which is superior. As for now, I am very satisfied with both! Very solid lights compared to cheap models I have purchased in past.

  11. Here are some final pics before harvesting....

  12. Where are the pics?

  13. There is an error uploading... I am still trying. Grass city please help!

  14. error413 is the code i keep getting....
