MJ for depression, but dont want to feel high

Discussion in 'Medical Marijuana Usage and Applications' started by WestBrain, Jul 22, 2015.

  1. Hey all,

I've been struggling with depression lately and am exploring my options for medication. I'm not severely depressed, as in I can still function, though I've lost interest in a lot of things. I've lost interest in meeting new people, in my hobbies. I just have a general "I don't give a shit about anything" feeling most of the time.

I've been reading up on THC vs CBD, and it seems that THC is more for depression while CBD is better for anxiety. But I don't want to the psychoactive effects of THC, as I have a very mentally engaging job and I need a sharp memory and my full wits about me at all times. Can anyone maybe point me in the right direction?

I'm not totally against pharmaceutical options such as Wellbutrin or Lexapro, but if I can fix this with a natural solution, I'd prefer to go that route.

    Thanks.

  2. yeah man well the thc is kind of what takes the depression away IMO. without the thc not sure if the depression will be relieved. your best bet is to monitor dosage. take just enough to knock the issue down and no more. you will feel accomplishment for treating yourself and the little bit of euphoria will highlight the depression being gone. kind of odd, the euphoria is what you seek instead of being down yet you want the depression to end with no euphoria attached.... we can not have a cake and eat the same cake as well, one or the other

  3. The psychoactive effect of THC is what relieves depression.

are you expecting THC-A to be a magical cure for your deperession?

    keep looking

  4. Cannabis isn't really the best medicine for treating "general I don't give a shit about anything feeling" in my opinion/experience, as it can have a demotivational effect. . :)

  5. Really? So Leafly is full of crap?

  6. Are you a surgeon? Are you an airplane pilot? Not giving a shit and having to have your wits about you at all times is a scary situation. I'd suggest you get some counseling as well. Good luck.

  7. No, definitely not! My job is just very mentally engaging.
You're the one who brought up THC-A, not me. I was talking about the differences between THC and CBD.

I posted here because I'm looking at medicinal marijuana as an alternative to Big Pharma's anti-depressants. I don't suppose anyone here has gone done this route?

I think cannabis is much better suited for anti-anxiety. Depression you want something much more uplifting, and even narrow leaf drugs ("sativas") don't offer the type of level headed uplifting that lasts, and you dont want to have to smoke all day everyday just to feel numb to everything.

  9. I use cannabis partly for depression, but have found that there are other non-medication related ways to help with depression can be more useful. Like exercise, cleaning my apt, interacting with animals, etc.

Part of my depression was anxiety related, so cannabis did help with that part.

Instead of going for High THC content buds for example the 18+ THC range wouldn't be desirable for you as the funky spaced out feeling you get on a comedown might make your symptoms worse, try something with around 10 to %14bTHC with a decent CBD ratio 'While at work' - then you could possibly try a high THC strain when your at home to experiment :)

  11. Try something with high thc and thc-v with little to no cbd in an edible or capsule.. Never tried it but seems adjusting the dose could help keep a clear headed buzz and not be tripping balls

  12. I take high CBD for chronic pain and haven't noticed it to help depression. Sativas often give me more anxiety than motivation, so I find the best Mexico to be a hybrid. Any good dispensary can help with your individual body chemistry. BTW - I've kicked ALL pain & psych pills

  13. I've been using weed to manage my depression for the past 8 or so years so I can tell you that it may work, and it may not, it all depends on you as a person. I happen to find my depression isn't really helped by the THC or CBD content of the plant I'm inhaling but by the terpenes(smells/flavors) in that plant. I generally like to hit things with a fruity or citrus taste if I'm trying to bring myself more 'up', and I avoid things with pepper or the dreaded 'basement smell' cause it brings me 'down'. I think you just need to experiment with different taste profiles until you find that special plant that works, then clone the fuck out of it. My personal strain recommendation would be Jillybean from TGA seeds. She grows easy, has weight, and it tastes like oranges but doesn't really make you stupid.

  14. If you're looking for a more holistic remedy for ailments such as depression and anxiety, cannabis is only one possible treatment. Something as simple as changing your diet can work miracles.

  15. WestBrain:
First, don't self-diagnose your depression. Have you felt this way every day, or nearly every day for two weeks or longer? If so, then visit your physician, a psychiatrist, or clinical psychologist depending upon what is available to you. They will be able to assess whether you're feeling just the normal ups and downs of life, or if your depressed mood warrants serious attention.

Second, if you do indeed are suffering from clinical depression, then you can discuss treatment options and your concerns with your mental health care professional. There are other therapeutic options besides medications or in conjunction.

Third, just because something is "natural" doesn't necessarily make it safer or more effective for you. Cannabis is a drug. Anti-depressant medications are drugs. Some people respond better to certain medications than others.

Fourth, depending upon the state you live in, medical marijuana may not even be available for you, and even if it is, it is very likely your employer doesn't tolerate you being high on the job, regardless of how sharp your wits needs to be. Getting fired is probably not going to help your depression.

NO MEDICATION WILL SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM ... this is not a medication problem ... this is a modern problem ... and a result of where we are in history ... it may be a root cause of your belief system most likely or be a cause of something going wrong with your gut health ... if you want to get out of depression ... take care of your gut ... look into mineral and metal colloids ... take a lot of bacterial based food and supplements ... and get some light into your life ... be that with plasma technology or something else ... granted THC is a light based crystalline energy ... but that brings on a whole host of other complications you might not want to deal with.

I need to say that most Dr's and specialists are OLD and have no idea of the reality of nature - most Dr's still believe that a large proportion of the population is producing too much stomach acid and prescribe deadly anti acids

most Dr's still believe they should recommend you take less salt for high blood pressure. When they believe that salt is a chemical called SODIUM CHLORIDE ... SALT is not that ... salt comes from the sea or from the land and is filled with nutrition.

most Dr's to be fair haven't a clue about how the body works!! otherwise NO Dr would consciously prescribe chemical suppressants or stimulants to a body that is highly intelligent and knows exactly what it's doing. FORCING anything anywhere to do anything is NOT a good way of doing. We must - and this is VITAL to understanding nature - WORK WITH NATURE not against it!!

if you cannot see the basic simplicity in this argument then do not start one - because i wont be waisting my time with people who don't understand the system or nature.

  17. I find that cbd strains with little to no thc do not help depression. Really a good hybrid works best for me but then you still have the psychoactive components.

  18. Just an opinion, but smoking for depression is a bad idea, it's a bandaid for something that needs sutures.

I'd recommend talking to a doctor. Usually they will tell you to take meds for a while, that will help more shot term. Second is running, try running 20-30 minutes per day without using head phones. Third is counseling. When they did some studies it showed that people with depression are more likely to recover when combining all three.

The last bit of advise if give you is establish at least one close relationship and confide in them how you feel, that way if it gets worse you have support. Good luck man
