First time raising chickens

  1. Well I am entering the world of chicken and turkey ownership. I got my coup I got the chicks from e fowl. Had to order 15 chicks. So I got 7 road island reds 7 Jersey blacks and 1 royal palm turkey. When they got here found out I got and extra Jersey chick. Raising for meat and eggs so meny of these chicks will end up on my table young. Only the 7 best egg layers will be keeped for the long hall. I've had them for 5 weeks now they got here the day after they hatched. The pictures were taking about a two weeks ago when they still looked like babys.

  2. My neighbor next door had a bunch of chickens running around in his back yard, I noticed over the next week or so there were less and less of them and then one morning I heard a weird noise or something so I went to look and sure enough there was his dog laying in the shade with a chicken in his mouth lol

  3. I used to enjoy raising chickens. I never could bring myself to eat any of them. We always had lots of eggs though.

  4. Growing up and eating a ton got two roosters. Soon as they crow we eat them.

  5. About how long until you can eat a turkey chick? Would it be ready in time for Thanksgiving?
I like the idea of raising a turkey every year and eating it for Thanksgiving. :D

  6. nice idea herb I thought about rising a turkey for thanksgiving also to teach the kids a lesion, but idk, I think we would get attached lol and I can't kill it anymore

  7. Yeah the only sad part would be killing it lol. I could definitely eat it though.
Maybe pay someone to humanely kill it/gut it when the time comes? Or even naming it something meal related :D

  8. Our coop will be here this weekend. Going to get a few ducks and a turkey
    Forgot the pic

  9. I hated raising ducks they are such a mess when they are young always smelling like crap.

  10. I want to get me a nice drake for the wall.

  11. I really wanted to raise a few chickens but my town has weird ordinances about it.

For a long time you couldn't have chickens at all in my town, recently they've changed that. But if you want a chicken coop you have to like bring in a schematic of the coop, you have to follow all these guidelines about how close it can be to your property lines, an inspector has to come out and approve your spot and design before they allow you to do it. And this is just for regular, small personal chicken coops lol

That, and worrying about keeping the chickens warm during our winters is what turned me off from doing it.

  12. Keeping them warm in the winter is probably easier than keeping them from being eaten.

Also, white ducks require less effort to catch once full grown because they are very slow.

  13. I have a pool, so have a 10 foot privacy fence all around my yard. On top of that, where I have my garden and where I was going to put my coop is in a section that's fenced off within my fenced off yard. I live in the suburbs. Other than racoons I wouldn't have any issues. I'd be more concerned with the winters with windchill's of negative 20 and feet of snow lol

  14. chickens are fun animals to raise and I don't really see any point in killing and eating them as you don't get much off of them for how long you need to raise them

  15. Well we ate the Turkey for thanksgiving. He was so yummy the next on the chopping block is the rooster in spring. We are getting so meny eggs around like dozen a day

chickens are cool creatures, other than the smell of their poop.
My mom has a few chickens for eggs, they remember her and no one else is allowed to pet them but her, oh and her wolf hybrids. They viciously protect them from the coyotes that used to enter her property. The chickens don't fear the dogs either.

  18. If you want meat as to leave your best layers alone, I suggest you get rabbits cookie, they reproduce almost as fast as mice an have a lot of meat. Just a suggestion. Peace
