500 grow tent setup help

Discussion in 'Grow Room Design/Setup' started by Growzo420, May 14, 2015.

  1. So I have decided to get growing. I will be growing in soil in a grow tent that is going to be 36"x20"x62". That is the tent that I have to stick with for now. I am posting to see what you guys would buy with the 500 as a first soil grow because right now I have nothing but the cash. Starting from scratch, doesn't matter what type of lighting etc. I just want to see what some of you would do to get some ideas on what kind of setup I should get. This is my first grow and I could invest a little more over time but am looking to get started growing with what I have right now. All comments and setups are welcome. Thanks guys

  2. Yield Lab 6 Inch 440 CFM Charcoal Filter and Duct Fan Combo Kit - 129.95
Yield Lab 600w HPS+MH Cool Tube Hood Reflector Grow Light Kit - 259.95

I'd run the duct fan outside of the tent blowing out with a small amount of ducting into the tent, then the light, then the carbon filter. This way the fan would be pulling air through the filter, then the light and outside. Only problem with this setup is you have to be able to contrl the temperature inside the grow room, since the only air being used to cool the light is coming from inside the tent.

If you can't directly control the temperature of the grow room, I'd get another 200-300CFM fan solely to pull air outside the tent and through the light and back out the tent. Then use the fan and carbon filter just for filtering.

For soil I would use a 50/50 mix of Fox Farm Ocean Forest and Coco Coir. This will get you through the first 3-4 weeks of veg without needing any nutrients since Ocean Forest is a hot soil. From there, it's all up to what you want to feed them. I personally use advanced nutrient products, but they can get very expensive very fast unless your using only the basic Sensi Grow and Sensi Bloom. Id recommend going to a grow shop to buy soil and nutrients, shipping can get quite expensive with tens of pounds of soil and liquid nutes.

For pots I would highly recommend smart pots. The fabric allows the roots to air prune themselves, and the pots dry out more evenly. Not to mention its pretty much impossible to overwater with them.

  3. Wow thanks, that's exactly what I'm looking for is different things from actual growers that they have used and experienced instead of buying something that doesn't work all that well. Much appreciated, thank you

No problem. Glad to help. For ducting, you should just use regular flex duct. Insulated ducting is only useful if you have a bunch of lights strung together in a small space.

If heat is a major issue for you, then get LEDs instead of an HID. Whatever Mars2 brand LED you can get for around the same price. It won't be as good as an HID but they don't get nearly as hot.

My current setup is 2 600w cool tube HIDs and a 1000w hooded HID linked together with insulated ducting and cooled by a single 440CFM fan. A separate 400ishCFM fan and carbon filter to keep the smell down during flowering. All in a single 5'x5'x8' tent.

You can see the pictures and a better description here if interested (First post on Page 90 if it doesn't load my post directly):
