    Hello,

I am new to growing marijuana and would love some help and advice. I have a grow bible that I read through, but I want to make sure I purchase the proper materials to start my first grow. I'll post my current plans below, and if people can help add to the list of things I need, I would greatly appreciate it.

    Setup:
5x5 Gorilla Grow Tent ( in garage )
    3 Autoflower Lemon Haze Feminized
    3 Autoflower Widow Feminized

5 Gallon Smart Pots ( all plants from seed )
    50% Fox Farms Ocean Forest
    50% Perlite

    Lighting:
    1000W HPS
Mars II 1600W LED Grow Light
    Kind K5 XL1000

I wanted to use either a HPS or LED lighting system. I live in California, so the heat this summer would be difficult to combat with the 1000W HPS; however, I am unsure if the LED Light is going to cause a heat issue too.

I am unsure how to choose air filters for the tent, how to choose a fan, what 'cfm' filter to purchase, etc...

Any and all help is appreciated, thank you!

  2. If you are serious about growing quality meds, then do not buy either of your led choices

Amare Technologies is a cannabis grower who designed his panels specifically for cannabis growers

There are several GC threads using various models

  3.
The first one looks nice, the Vortex ( http://growershouse.com/vortex-s-line-6-347-cfm-fan-phresh-400-carbon-filter-package )
Could that be used only for filtering air or could that cool a tent running a 1000W HPS?

  4.
My experience with places that don't put a price online usually means it's going to be ridiculously expensive. Do you know what the price range is for the lights there? I didn't see them online. Also, do they have an equivalent to a 1000W bulb?

Both. That is essentially the same setup I have. I have a carbon filter in the tent connected to a vortex fan that pulls air through it and pushes it out of the tent through some insulated flex duct (Usually overkill using insulated ducting, but you'll see why I used it in a second).

The second fan is used to cool three HIDs ( High Intensity Discharge, HPS is the type of bulb ). A 1000 watt hood and 2 600 watt cool tubes. All in a 5x5x8 tent. That vortex fan should be more than enough for a single 1000 watt HID.

They aren't selling snake-oil, neither are they high priced, however they are not competing against cheap china pricing which uses vastly inferior parts and quality. In this case, you get what you pay for @~ $3/w

Equivalent means different things. I would think 3 SS 260s, or 2 Solar Eclipse (350w) would be equivalent performance wise.

  7. Is snake oil hella expensive ??

Sorry, I missed the dollar sign in my comment

    Quality panels run ~ $3/watt

  9. Snake oil was sold by people in past centuries to cure all medical problems; however, it was a scam and had little to no medical properties.

Essentially the point is that they sell quality lights that work for a quality price, and that they are not trying to sell cheap crappy lights to make a quick buck by ripping off people.

  10. Would the one fan cool the light, keep the tent cool, and filter air? Or do I need two fans?

What would be a good 1000W light to get for a 5x5 Gorilla grow tent?
Also, what light would I need for vegging? I just want to have to switch bulbs. But I know nothing about dimmable ballasts.

  11. It depends on how far your running the ducting outside the tent, but if its not far then yes. One fan should do the trick. I recently change my setup so it works that way; air is filtered by the carbon filter, then a fan pushes the air through the three HIDs, then runs to another fan which pushes the air outside vis-a-vis a 25ft duct to a window.

You'll have to shop around to find the best light for your price range and needs. There are quite a few good 1000w kits on eBay for a great price but you don't get a one year guarantee with eBay. If you buy a kit you should be all good, everything would work perfectly together.

For veg you can just use a metal halide bulb in the HID and switch to HPS for flowering. Some kits come with both bulbs. Shouldn't matter if the ballast is dimmable or not, a regular MH or HPS bulb should work. It just gives you more options in case you run into any heat issues. Some days are hotter than others.

Here's my setup as I tried to describe above. First picture shows the carbon filter (The dirty filter pads are getting replaced tomorrow), the fan, and the first HID. Then in the second picture insulated ducting connects the first HID to the second HID. Finally the third shows the second and third HIDs basically in-line with each other and ducting out of the tent.

  13.
Is there a list o everything you bascially need for a grow?

Right now I know I'll need....

    5x5 tent
    1000w lightbulb
400w lightbulb (for begging, 400w is correct?)
    fan
    ducting
    pots
    soil
    perlite
    air filter

but I'm not sure if I'll need more, like, fans, ph meters, other meters, jars for curing, etc...

From start to finish, is there a list of supplies needed?

  14. Flowering you'll want a 1000w high pressure sodium bulb.

For the veg bulb you should probably get a 1000w metal halide. If you get a dimmable ballast you should be able to set it to 1000w, 750w, or 500w.

Make sure the carbon filter and fan you have the proper CFMs. Carbon filters usually take 20-25% of your fans CFMs away. So with a 400CFM carbon filter you don't want your fan to have more than 480 CFM rating. [400 + (400x0.2)]=480. If your pushing air through your light make sure the hood/tube is sealed otherwise hot air will leak into your tent from the hood. Duct or metallic tape comes in handy if that's the case.

For ducting just use normal flex ducting unless sound is a major issue for you. In which case you want acoustic ducting. Make sure to use clamps when connected duct to your light or fans. Metallic tape can really help make that extra seal if you have air leakage or get paranoid about.

Some kind of strapping or big zip ties can help with mounting/hanging things up if yoyo hangars aren't enough.

For pots I'd highly recommend smart pots. They allow the water to filter out the bottom if over watered, and they air prune roots when they get to the fabric pot. That actually makes the plants fill out the pot more evenly and avoids problems caused by plastic pots.

You can use perlite or coco coir in your soil mix. I personally use coco coir. I think its better than perlite.

Meters and test kits are your best friend. You will definitely want a way to measure pH at the very least. I use 3-in-1 meters that measure lux, pH, and soil moisture. If you get a good meter you will know exactly when you need to water or start adding pH changing chemicals.

Of course you'll want the typical garden tools like some kind of shears.

Always, ALWAYS be ready to improvise. My tent and the area around it has changed so many times in response to all kinds of variables.
