Inert peat pods were soaked in plain room temperature water long enough to fully expand and were placed to allow them to properly drain any excess water. Seeds were then placed on the peat pods at their centers and pushed down with a rod until they were covered with approximately 1/4 inch of peat. They were then placed under Compact Fluorescent Lights (3ftx4ft, 8 bulb CFLs) where they will live until cotyledons () appear and roots begin to appear at the bottom of the peat pods. Water will be added as necessary in order to keep the moisture content of the peat pods between 25% and 35%. No nutrients will be provided for at least the first 2 weeks because the seeds already contain everything they need for this period of time and the addition of extra nutrients can stunt their growth. (Varying amounts of seeds were planted based on whether they were feminized or regular seeds and past germination rates.)

Our little ones popped their heads out today for the first time!
    View attachment 151877

Germination rate after 5 days is:

    Thai Mist 50%
    Panama Red 100%
    Area 51 25%
    Spicebox 66%
    Strange Brew 33%
    White Widow 100%
    Purple Star 0%*
    Three Elders      0%*

*We have not checked under the surface to see if these have actually germinated, but have failed to break the surface, which is my suspicion.

    2/8/15

    Germination rates have increased to:
    Thai Mist 100%
    Panama Red 100%
    Area 51 75%
    Spicebox 100%
    Strange Brew 100%
    White Widow 100%
    Purple Star 50%*
    Three Elders 50%*

  3. I was 6 for 6 with Purple Star and 4 for 6 with 3Elders.

The germination range for Purple Star was 4 - 12 days.
The germination range for 3Elders was 5 -  8 days.

Don't give up on them too soon.

  4. We're planning on letting every seed go 14 days, then checking inside the peat pods to see if the seed is active. Since we aren't transplanting outside until late March we have time to pop more seeds if the germination rate is too low.

    Not giving up Pakalolo.

In fact today, 9Feb, the remaining 4 seeds have germinated.  Now the long, but fun, wait. :)

  7. Hey sweet!   Those are exactly the same size as my seedlings.  They were one day earlier on the 1st.  Yours were the 2nd right?

Anyways, this will be my 2nd season using Organic living soil.  Last year was great, for a first attempt using organic living soil.  I have learned so much in the last year about all aspects of organic cannabis cultivation, with special emphasis on soil.  Living Organic Soil is facsinating to me and the reasons are many.

I'll be watching your progress and right along side you in a way.  Both using Living Organic soil outdoors beans popped a day apart.  Kinda cool.  Results/progress will be posted also.  I 'm debating on weather to start a seperate thread for the outdoor season.

I bid you good luck and a happy harvest! :metal:

    Here we go!

  8. This is for our outdoor grow.  These will be planted in our LOS garden outside when the threat of a freeze is gone.  Sometime in late March.

  9. Day 11 - Planting in 1 gallon pots
    2/12/15

    [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

Once each of the seedlings is 3-4 inches tall we'll spread mulch on the surface of each pot to retain water.

    LOS SOIL MIX
    30% Inert Organic Material
Sphagnum Peat Moss & Coco Coir & Leaf Mold

    30% Aeration material
2 parts Pumice, 1 part Vermiculite

    30% Humus
1 part earth worm castings (EWC), 1 part local used topsoil, 1 part leaf litter, 1 part compost

    10% Rock Dust
4 parts Glacial Rock Dust, 1 part Bentonite clay, 1 part powdered Oyster Shell, 1 part Basalt

    SOIL AMENDMENT MIX
To each 1 cubic foot of this mix we add the following:
    0.5 cups Karanja Cake/Neem meal
    0.5 cups Alfalfa meal
    0.5 cups Kelp meal
    0.5 cups Crab Shell Meal
    1 cups dried molasses
    0.5 cups comfrey/nettle/yarrow/borage/horsetail powder
    1 tbsp. BioAg ful-humix

The resulting soil was used for a cycle of growing and was fed to worms for a couple months.

Day 20 â€“ Seedling Growth Charts
    2/19/15

From the data available we can start to determine if a plant is male or female.
The Thai Mist-2 plant has a moderate volumetric profile while being one of the tallest plants. This isn't absolute proof that it is a male but it gives us an indication that is probably a male plant.
The Thai Mist-1 plant has a high volumetric profile and a tall profile. This gives us strong evidence that it is probably a vigorous female plant.

\nThe data so far is really promising. It's showing us that we have some pretty extreme hybrid vigor from all the crosses we had. This only occurs at a high rate when the two parents are almost, or completely, unrelated; this was one of our goals. The production from those plants should be really high.

All of the teenage plants where either transplanted into the ground or into 5 gallon containers and placed near the ground bound plants. Any plants that could be identified as being male, possessing immature pollen sacks, were cut and mulched. Each one had a drip line attached and will be watered daily. All the seedlings will continue to grow under the CFL panel until they are 18′ or taller.

The two major things we noticed while transplanting were that the Area51 #4 seems to be a either a runt or it has super expressed it's Afghani heritage, although we are leaning towards it just being a runt, and that the stems on the Panama Red, purchased from Swami Genetics, are very thin and absolutely must be supported with stakes from an early age. It's possible that the PR will develop thicker stems as it ages and we've got our fingers crossed hoping it does. If we germinate anymore PR seeds in the future we'll keep an eye on stems to see if these two were typical for the strain.
