Do fish get bored?

  1. In tanks, do you think they get bored?

  2. Fish have a memory span of 1-5 seconds so I doubt it.

  3. Not when I put them in with my turtle haha

That's actually a myth. It varies per fish, but goldfish have been shown to remember things months after. It's speculated that that myth came to be so it didn't seem so cruel to leave them in a small bowl.. saying that they can't remember anything from a few seconds beforehand, so it's not like they can get bored.

I'd say yes, they probably do get bored.. but then again fish don't have a wide range of emotions like mammals.

  5. Oh shit thanks for telling me that.. I googled it just now.

  6. I've actually wondered this as a fishkeeper.

They seem to care more about finding food than exploring.

Ill have to do an experiment. This is one I can actually do :D

  7. Good question but probably not.

  8. Boredom doesn't exist.
    Animals have souls, and feelings.
But they run on instinct not intellect.
That makes them 10x better than we are.

Because when some of us are bored, we do stupid shit. Sometimes hurting ourselves and others.

  9.
Boredom has gotten me into many, many sticky situations over the years!

  10. Fish do not get bored but octopuses do.

    Octopi...? Octopussies?

  11. Yes, fish do get bored!   Studies have proven that trout raised in bare tanks are far less intelligent than trout raised in tanks with gravel and objects, and often sit around doing nothing, as opposed to the stimulated trout being highly active and curious.

Fish aren't mindless, some are actually on par with mammals when it comes to intelligence, they have a strong ability to learn.

Sharks are an even better example, some even show advanced play behavior in their adolescence, like porbeagles.

  12. I'm fucking really bored right now.

  13. I have a tank full of white cloud mountain minnows right now.  They never get bored because they are constantly establishing and rivaling the pecking order.  Super fun to watch.

Tiger Barbs were my favorite fish I have ever owned.  <-- another one that likely doesn't get bored.

  14. probably just from what i know of shark behaviors, they are amazingly beautiful creatures. idk how it would affect things smaller in size (or even smaller sharks) but i would stay the possibility is definitely there.

  15. Best way to think about it, if an animal can be entertained.. they can be bored.

  16. Sooooo.

What you are saying is that boredom does exist?

  17.
Boredom is a state of mind, it only exists in a persons head.
We have different ways of thinking, some people think some things are exciting while other find them unsatisfactory.

  18. Dolphins are supposed to be the 2nd most intelligent mammal, only to humans.

  19. I have no idea if fish get bored like we do, but I can tell the energy levels of fish.

When I kept fish, I always had this ratio of body length to tank length. A fish MUST be able to stretch it's legs (fins). So a 2" fish would get at least a 5 foot tank. I've seen idiots stick large bodied fish (cichlids, gars, high end catfish, etc) into a small 60-100 gallon tank... A fish too big for its tank will not be thriving and will look bored, or miserable.

Goldfish require massive tanks, and cool water.
They can live a in a warm bowl, but humans can live in a 8x8 cell also...

  20. It's funny, they're not sure if dolphins outsmart crows, whose brain is much much smaller...
