Pakalolos Organics For The Win

Discussion in 'Organic Grow Journals' started by Pakalolo, Feb 26, 2014.

  1. My apologizes for starting this yet again in the wrong place. I wish I could blame it on being too high but I'm at work and I never smoke when I'm working. So follow me here to the grow journals.

I'm moving my grow journal over here in the organics forum. I started out with the idea of going DWC and put my grow journal in the indoor growing forum. I quickly decided to go all organic but left the grow journal where it was at.

I got through my first full organic grow and was delighted with the results. So I'm in the process of sprouting new genetics and this seemed like the time to start a grow journal here where it belongs.

My indoor journal can be found here: http://forum.grassci...o-does-way.html. My intent was to describe what I experienced moving to organics. There are lots of good contribution from others in that journal besides my own explanations.

I won't be fully moved here until next week but I wanted to get this started. I hope that lurkers and posters alike find something here that will make them better growers. Enjoy.

If you don't know me then let me say anyone is welcome to post anything in this journal. Comments, suggestions, pictures, anything. I just started this journal but as far as I'm concerned it's everyone's journal.

As a FYI my last post on the other journal will be some references back to what I consider important posts about soil mixing, IPM and things like that. I'm working on that now but won't get it in until the weekend or next week. However there is lots of good stuff in there from other growers. I hope you find some value there.

AW's a Ninja Gandolf!!......  Heya Pakalolo l! Good to be in on the start of your new journal. As a fellow Washingtonian I'm looking forward to going along for the ride. :hello:

  7.
I don't care what others think but in my opinion indoor growing got a huge head start here in Washington. It was just the natural thing to do with our summers being so varied. Maybe you could get a crop outside and maybe not with mold and powdery mildew and the likes. But indoors you could always get something even with the problems of spider mites.

Glad to have you along for the journal. The more PNW (this includes the state of Oregon) adding to this journal will only improve others that follow along. I've learned so much in the last 4 months about organic growing from everyone. This is a small attempt to repay it forward to those beginning down the path of organic growing.

My first organic grow is followed in the indoor grow forum. I kept it simple for the first run but I'm going to change things up a bit. One of the things I understand more clearly is that minerals do not quickly break down. So they don't make the soil hot. They add places for microbes to latch on to. They provide elements like calcium and phosphorous. They break down slowly over time.

I've decided to mix up some of the minerals I have and use that as my 'rock dust'. I'll add this mixture at 3 cups per cubic foot of soil.

Here is what I mixed together (the numbers are the portions). I used a 12 ounce beer cup to measure with but you could use any thing you want.

    6 parts basalt
    3 parts granite rock dust
    1 part  oyster shell flour
    1 part  gypsum
    1 part  bentonite
    1 part  soft rock phosphorous

I'll be mixing up some more soil here soon and this is what I'll use. The goal here is to add diversity and not complexity. I don't expect this to harm my soil and I'm hoping that when I make my no till pots this will be more beneficial over time.

  13. ehhhhh pak  im subbing in.....i got a bunch more soil to mix in the next little bit too!

excited to watch this round dude

  14. Another change I'm making with this run is to change up my Integrated Pest Management (IPM). I was using the basic IPM spray that was posted by LD. As I've explained before I was using this once a week. During this last run my ladies had some issues with spider mites and powdery mildew. So I decided to spray every 3 days with the neem oil/ProTeKt/aloe vera juice concoction.

Now I'm going to add Spinosa and Serenade to the mixture. I'm still going to go with the LD recipe every 3 days but I'm also going to hit them with the other two sprays. Now the Spinosa is for disrupting the spider mites environment while Serenade works against powder mildew.

Neem oil has 2 great effects with anti-feedent and reproduction disruption properties. The anti-feedent will prohibit an insect from digesting food. The reproduction disruption explains itself. By adding different spray to the IPM will make it difficult for the pests to adapt. So far my teenagers are looking good.

The last thing I'm doing this run is mixing up a water solution for my clones and seedlings.

I mixed this in one gallon of water.

4 tablespoons of aloe vera juice
       2 tablespoons of Ful-Power
       1 teaspoon of ProTeKt

Again I'm not adding complexity but instead adding diversity.

Greentrails, I'm glad you're coming along for the second round. I'm feeling a lot more confident this time. Tomorrow I will put up some pictures of the babies and the teenagers. Or at least before the weekend finishes.

  16. knowledge is power man...get more and more comfortable and tuned in as you go...this oughta be great :)

aw  veggers! those gals are cute

  17.
Since this is for clones and seedlings, you may consider adding 2 tsp of kelp meal to each gallon of water.  You'll get IAA and IBA, two of the 3 most common plant hormones used for rooting.  It also has gibberellins which are associated with increasing the number of cells, and thus promoting growth.  As well as other goodies.  Just a thought.

The other common rooting hormone, NAA, is synthetic, and the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act requires products containing NAA to register as pesticides (Dip N Grow, Clonex, etc) lol

  18. Hey don't mind me just a lurker reaping the benefits

Will be starting my outdoor soon so good knowledge is always accepted

    Subbed.

  19.
Kelp meal seems to be good for everything. I might throw in the 2 tsp as you suggest. I've been using Clonex and I tried using different technique (described in my other journal) without much success. I'm thinking I'm going back to RootTone. I used that successfully for years.

I've quit using ProMix for cloning and seedlings. I mix my own cloning soil with EWC : peat moss : pumice in equal amounts. That seems to be working for me. I'll probably get some pictures up tonight and you can judge for yourself.
