Attic Grow Room Design

  1. Hello GC,

I require assistance with my new project that I would like to take on. I currentky have a wardrober grow in ny attic custom built for one plant. I want more :).

I am looking to build 2 rooms in my attic. One for vegging and one for flowering. There is a picture below of my attic for your opinions on my design. I know hrowing in the attic is a pollava but Its what i want to do.

    Materials:
I have numerous floorboards that lock together. Thinking of using this for the walls. For both rooms. I have a number of Celotex insulation boards your for insulation.

Will be using cfl's for veg and HPS for flowering.

Please any ideas would be brilliant.

  4. Whats the size of your attic? Whats your budget? You want hydro or soil? Gotta think about moving all that water up all the time. But it all matters on your budget mate. Give us a few more specs and i'm sure we'll be able to get you in the right direction.

  5. Well im looking at hydro. Already have a resevoir in the attic so thats no issue dude. highest peak i'd say was 5ft high. each room is about 1metre and half each side. Thanks for getting back man. really appreciated

  6. Nice, I'm working on an attic grow myself similar to this here's a picture of my attic. ImageUploadedByGrasscity Forum1384021544.098538.jpg It's going to be a challenge.

I'm thinking first thing ill do is relay the insulation and get rid of whatever I don't need . Then I'm wondering if I should set up a vapor barrier to basically keep all the insulation separated. (What do you think?) Then of course last plywood down across the joists to make a solid floor. By the time I'm down with that I will have about 4.5feet of space between the floor and the highest point I can get have my lights as you can seen in the picture. I believe those are CFLs.

Sidenote: This is my first grow so I know so little about this. My buddy used to grow and gave me his lights, and the carbon filter along with soils and things. He's no expert but he says you can't screw it up you can only make it better.

Anyways next what were thinking of doing is either using heavy duty card board... Or plywood and to nail the sheets up against the outside of the trusses to make almost like a roof inside the attic which we we will line with space blankets to use as reflection and extra insulation. Then we will staple up a tarp around the outside and to the floor to kind of give it a sealed off tent type of set up. To get into the tent we will just make a a little Velcro/tarp door or something simple.

Then I read that I need to separate budding and growing plants which must be why he gave me to big lamp fixtures. So perhaps I will just drape a tarp in between the two fixtures so there's some separation. (What do you think? Might be sketchy having the light bleed so I'll have to really seal that thing or use heavy tarps).
Then ill run my filter inside of the tent and just set up an exhaust to the vent outside 10 feet away.

Next biggest problem is moving around up there. I've got about 5 feet of space height wise so it's definitely uncomfortable to move around in but I think there's plenty of space to grow. I've read a few things on low stress training and I'm think that might be something I try to incorporate.

Anyways I'm too in search of advise as well

  7. Hey Bud. Looks like we are both on the same page. Be great to compare ideas and plans. It looks as though you have it down too a tee really mate. Dont get rid of what you dont need. you can always use it to insulate places around your grow area. Yeah you have flourescent tubes. They will do the job mate. No problem!

I would go woth the plywood ideam Without a doubt. I'm not really a fan of the cardboard idea. Plywood or Plasterboard will do thr job perfect. An alternative to space blankets is basically bubblewrap covered with reflective material. Buy it from any hardware store. It is used also on cars (Placed at the windscreen of a car whilt the sun is out to prevent your car dashboard from heating etc). Thats what i'll be using. Velcro tarp door sounds good. Just ensure no light leeks.

I would have 2 rooms. Simply for a constant supply. A vegging room 24 hours lights on or 16 hours lights on and 8 hours lights off and flowering room with a light cycle of 12 hours lights on and 12 hours lights off.

My personal opinion is that you should be a few thin planks on wood and nail them from your top trusses to your centre joist. By the looks of thing you would need 10. 1 in either side of the joist on the floor and one on each truss. Fill that with insulation and the plywood or Plasterboard. Thats what i'll be doing. (I hope this makes sense. If not please do let me know). 5 Ft is enough dude. If not look into the SCROG method. Im currently using this method on my current grow. Its great!! i will post a picture below. Give you an idea of my home made Screen. Good Luck and keep me posted!!

  9. Looks good dude! I decided that crawling up into my attic was a major pain in the ass and I was fearful that fiberglass particles would stick to my buds so I've revamped my idea with a new location. I'm basically putting a false ceiling in this storage room at my house with about a 10 foot sealing which is where my attic access is. It's got large heavy duty shelving about 6.5 feet up which I will turn into the false celling ImageUploadedByGrasscity Forum1384202817.574128.jpg and ill use the remaining space for a grow room.
I would have liked to do it in the attic for ultimate stealth but it was killing my knees and back trying to maneuver up there. I decided ill just do it this way and try to make the false ceiling look like maybe attic access or something then I will pad lock and if ever anyone asks what's up in my attic I can tell them storage and insulation to assure minimal suspicion. I live on a small island where everyone knows everyone and information spreads like wildfire. You tell one buddy your growing and then next thing you know everybody on the island knows and I'm trying to avoid that by still going stealth.
In the picture I'm standing in the closet looking up at the grow room. So designing a false ceiling is going to be the next challenging step in the process I would love to build in pull down stairs that I can use that's the best bet but I don't have much construction experience. Anyways man I'll quit spamming your thread with my stuff. Keep us posted though eventually ill move back up to the attic and ill need some ideas. Best of luck and I hope your yields are great
