Can We Have A Cactus/succulent Thread?

Discussion in 'Gardening' started by junkheadrev, May 18, 2013.

  1. I've noticed a distinct lack of cactus on GC.
Just thought I would do my part and make a cactus thread.
Hopefully this will be a thread for IDing species , asking questions , helping fellow blades diagnose cacti disease or rot , and of course showing off your cactus/succulents.
To avoid having this thread shut down please don't talk about anything that is against the rules...
I'll start off by showing off most of my current cactus collection and my recent flowerings.

  5. You'd be surprised at what you can smoke or digest in the cacti/succulent world ;)

I'll post up my mini collection soon, most look a bit sad ATM, but most importantly the peyote is slowly taking off.

The third one is a twisted rib cactus , I picked it up about a year ago, native to texas .
It's nice to get it from the source. Blooms every year. The other is a echinopsis dominos i got from Walmart. Has already had a couple flowerings during the month or so that I've had it
Please get motivated. I love cactus porn
    Very nice !
Is that a bridgesii Montrose bottom right?

  10. It sure is, have a couple more elsewhere.. The "penis" cacti

I've grown a few San Pedro cactii. I planted one in my parent's garden, and it's now taller than their house. I plan to go and get a cutting from them whenever possible, if you know what I mean. As I don't have a garden at my own place, my San Pedro is confined to a relatively constricting pot, and has plataued in height to about a meter tall (two trunks). It has had it's third flower, recently.

  12. They are definitely ...unique
That's awesome. My pedros have never flowered

  13. Nice ! I won't lie and say I know the species but it's a beauty

  14. Those are some beauties OP! Got me wanting to show up my landlord now.

I never liked cacti until I just saw those.
    Beautiful.

  15. Bad new guys.
I decided to head to the local bonsai place to buy a couple pedros ....I should say save, because those peoples cactus are in horrible shape, but they have them in stock all year round .
Anyway while i was there I decided to buy a couple new pots to put my old golden barrel and pedros in because they are getting a bit too big.
When I was transplanting one I noticed I had somehow forgot to take it out of the soil it came in when I got it .
That's bad enough because it was a over watered when I got it and the soil was shit.
However I also noticed it was developing root rot, which is a.fucking bitch.
It ruined what was turning out to be a pretty good day, with the new pedros and all.

Well I cut the top off and I'm drying it now so I can root it .
I replanted the bottom in the hopes that a miracle happens and it heals itself.
If that happens then I should expect it to pup in a month or so.
If not then at least I saved.most of it.

I'll end this on a happy note and show off two of my new and almost healthy charity cases from todays pick up as well as a newly pupped Bolivian torch (bridgesii)

  16.
Thanks! I'm glad I could show you the less painful side of these plants.
The spines can be a bitch though , I won't lie.
Wow , I now jealousy is a sin and all...
    Those are amazing specimens.
Did you grow them from seeds? Do they not have spines? It almost looks like a Pedro x Scopulicola hybrid or something.

  17. So, if I were to mix a soil up, or make a compost specifically for cacti/succulents, how/what/ should I do be doing?
I'm strictly organic, more natural than so. I understand acidic, only slight nitrogen,, but lost otherwise.

I do have three little bitty regular cacti that I've only been able to keep alive with a drop of vinegar to a cup of water.. :/
