Beginner's shatter question

Discussion in 'Concentrate Tools' started by viquet, Apr 13, 2013.

  1. I have some shatter that is solid at room temperature. I can get it to a taffy consistency with gentle torch heat, but as I pull off the dab with a dental pick it solidifies and breaks off (and flies across the room). Is there a way to keep it soft? Would a glass dish retain heat? I'm clueless here.

  2. Technique is key.

I love the jolly rancher consistency, I find it easier to work with then the taffy, and sap stuff. One thing you can do is put a piece of paper over it when your breaking it up so if anything shatters off it hits the paper instead of flying across the room.

The stuff I have right now stays like glass even when being handled so I just brake it up with my hands and weight out my desired dab.

With practice you will learn to use your tool to break up the shatter with out loosing any.

  3. Thanks! I'll keep practicing. I've had some success using an eyeglass screwdriver to break off chunks.

  4. get a Ti dabber with a flat or scoop end. i have a Cosmic double ended dab stick, ball on one side and flat scoop on the other. i store my shatter in a 420science concentrate jar and the scoop helps to scrape the sticky but still somehow glass like oil off the glass jar without it flying everywhere as pieces break off. i find it helps a ton using the proper tools for the job.

also with Ti dab stick you can safely heat it up a bit with a lighter to help remove the oil without it shattering everywhere.

  5. Just put it in your concentrate dish or pyrex dish and run that torch like 3-4 inches under it for 2-3 seconds.Your not trying to smoke it at this point just "loosen" it up. You dont want those dabs flying everywhere.Especially in your eye.Friend did this and was blitzed!

  6. Don't tell someone to torch their errl^

Playin with shatter is an art man lol you gotta get that shit down. Its kinda hard to explain, I just poke my dabber on it and pull it off, and a nice little shard pops off onto the dabber. It also depends on consistency, whether its rock hard stuff(thats when you just break off bits with your fingers and DUNK IT!) or like a pull 'n snap, you'll get it after a while.

    Practice makes perfect lol :smoke:

  7. I prefer to heat the dabber rather than the dish. If you mess up and get the dabber too hot there's only a tiny bit of waste around where the dabber ran through the concentrate, and if you do it right the oil won't be affected at all. Its the hot knife through butter concept, your applying only enough heat to cause it to give way. Usually when I do this the dab will still "shatter" off from the rest, but its now much more firmly planted on the dabber(who here knows the pain of getting the everything ready, picking up the dabber and about to take a hit when your dab detaches and ends up lost or on the floor or even worse you find a crumb which resembles the dab and do that instead).

Try not to make direct contact between flame/dabber, and I usually apply the heat for a fraction of a second, it doesn't take much before your baking residue into the dabber which is next to impossible to remove.

I'll second don't torch your oil. For one thing if your getting plastic jars from the dispensary that can't be safe and for two if your oil is high enough quality to be shatter consistency you don't want to ruin that with a bunch of heat! (Or the dirt/oils from your fingers for that matter)

  8. use ur fingers to break off a dunk n dunk it.....forget about the dabber

  9. how do you get your oil to a shatter
