Getting my first car.. Sound System Help???

  1. Hello everyone of GC.
I'm getting my first car finally, paying for it myself and all that.
It is a 2001 Mustang, it's in perfect shape, nothing to wrong with it at all and only has 149k miles on it.

But my question is.. What would be a good set-up for a sound system?
I never really got into cars and all that so this is a new world for me completely.
Starting from the CD Player to the very smallest of speakers, I need to know what should go into this. I'm not trying to spend hundreds upon hundreds, I'm not trying to shatter windows or shake the world, BUT I do want it to be good and loud with a good amount of bass.

ALSO, my entire music life runs off my ipod.. So one that I can plug that into as well that is all fancy. I'd love a Radio with a pop-out touch screen and all that.

    So please... Help?

  2. If you want bass and a pop out touch screen you're going to have to spent hundreds on hundreds. Find a cheap ghettoish stereo system car tinting etc shop by you and go over and reason the fuck out of them. I just got two 12 inch kenwoods subs in my trunk and that shit goes hard. If I were you I'd get a whole kenwoods package with the amp, subs etc. If your car's speakers are weak and you want a new head unit then you may want to get some new ones, kenwoods or pioneers are a decent price, and a touch screen head unit with aux compatibility.

  3. Thanks, but like I said.. I don't know much about all this.. So links..?

    ^^^what I have and they're amazing^^^^

^theres way cheaper ones too, I have Friends who've had speakers and a little radio with iPod connectivity installed for like 200.

Not sure if you'll need new speakers. Something you might want to figure out once you go to a shop.

Look up what you want on that website, that have some great prices.

that amp doesnt have enough balls for the subs (its less than half what you need to really push em). If i were you and this was going in a mustang i would get something like an 12 inch alpina type r or kicker comp vr and run a 400 watt rms amp to that in a sealed box. This will keep your truck somewhat useable and will probably be louder than what was posted above. you ll probably need a head unit or some new components but you can buy those things as you go.

  6. Give me an overall budget and I'd be happy to source a few suggestions if you also can answer a few questions.

Are you happy with what your car sounds like in general and just seek more bass?

What music do you generally listen to? "everything" applies to almost everyone, but narrow it down a little if you can.

What sort of hands on experience do you have? Is removing a door panel and using a screw driver an option?

And the last for the time being, if you even respond back lol, how do you feel about reading up and maybe learning a little something about the 12volt community?

After typing this, i can see some may appear to be trick questions just opening a way up for you to be insulted and by no means is that my point. There is no wrong answer, just some things that need to be known one way or another.

  7. A system sounds completley different from one car to the next. For example, my cheapo system in my Grand Prix sounded like shit, in my Firebird it out bumps my buddies 15" Alpine type R.
It all depends on budget, though. A touchscreen will be a double din radio, which I believe will fit in a '01 with only a mount kit= $10. If it doesn't have the room to fit a double din, it requires a dash kit, approx $200. For the system itself, I like Memphis M class door speakers, prob run 300 watts or so to them, I'm guessing $250 for that, for a cheap amp. For the subs, a lot of people like Kicker squares, I'd say 2 12's, around 175 excluding box, if you can build a box, it's simple, if not you're looking at another 50 for a decent audio tech to build it. If the option is there I'd put a shallow mount stealth box 10" which I believe will fit next to the rear passenger seat in, just for a little extra in the cabin. Figure another 1000 W amp for the subs, $200-300, then the touch screen radio. A good JVC will set you back $500 or so.
This would be a pretty highend set up though, you could shave prob $550 or so for cheapo shit. If I were you, if you're just buying your first car, hold off. Even though it seems good cond, you don't know the problems down the road. I'd rather have a car I can afford to fix, rather than one that sounds good in my driveway. 149k isn't something to say only at, when you don't know the maintaince in the past. For someone that didn't take care of it, some serious shit may be just around the corner at 150. If you insist on doing it though, hold off, wait for some black friday sales. I got a set of nice ass $800 speakers last year for 300, then flipped for 600 in 2 days. It's only 2 months.

  8. Hell, the mustangs have a good stock system as is. Those 5x7s are crisp and can put out some good volume too. I'd just throw a couple of 10s or 12s with a 1000 watt amp in it, that's what I did for my 97 and it sounded great. Grab a radio with usb/aux off ebay for like $60

    Looking for loudness? Rainbow speakers.

    Looking for clarity? Focal.

    Both are expensive.

    Edit:
Oh, I didn't read your post. I guess you could try ebay or craigslist to find used items.

  10. Get a 10" sub with a cheap amp, stock speeks should be dease is a stang.
