preparing to smoke: grinder, scissors, tearing off chunks

Discussion in 'Seasoned Marijuana Users' started by tstick, May 3, 2012.

  1. There was a discussion developing on another thread (kief catching grinder). Someone came on and brought up a very valid point (I thought). The suggestion was made to start a thread to discuss the point further so as not to hijack the discussion.

So, here is a separate thread to discuss the side-issue that was brought up...

Some people like to use a grinder that collects the kief that gets separated during the grinding process and falls away from the rest of the plant matter that remains in the grinder in preparation to smoke.

But, IF the bud had not been ground up, then all the kief would remain intact and in the bud.

Let's say, for example, you just tore off or cut off small "budlets" and placed them in the bowl, unground? Would that not provide a more potent hit since all the kief is being included?

Granted, eventually a grinder would collect a reasonable amount of kief and then you'd be able to "reimburse" yourself with all that kief that had been missing from your hits, but...

...doesn't it really just boil down to a "Pay me now, or pay me later" kind of concept?

  2. I don't think it does because the amount of THC you lose when using a grinder is so minute that you don't even notice a difference for the most part. The way I look at it, I'm still going to get baked regardless of if I break it up by hand, grinder, etc.

  3. Using your fingers; kief ends up on your fingers instead of the bud.

  4. Maybe another analogy might be that a grinder is like a decaffeinator; It removes a lot of the caffeine from the rest of the coffee that you're getting ready to drink, now. Then eventually, you collect all that missing caffeine and then spoon it back into the coffee.

  5. If you could afford it you should definitely pick up a nice 4 piece. In a month or two you'll be glad you bought it.

  6. Whoops! Sorry! I was typing while you guys were responding. :)

    Here's a question:

"If you start with a clean grinder and some dank bud, just how much kief is extracted from each session?"

  7. I understand what you're saying. I can afford the grinder....but I can also use the money to just go to to the dispensary and buy some ready-to-go kief.

The contention is in regards to "Why not just leave the kief in the buds that you smoke, now, by not grinding them?" Then the kief is in there, already.

I understand that grinding is essential to proper vaporizing, btw. But what am I missing in regards to smoking?

Kief me now or kief me later! :p

  8. It's hard to notice a difference between ground bud and broken up bud (potency wise). It's not hard to notice a difference between a normal bowl and one topped with a good amount of kief.

  9. Because you're getting a concentrated version of the weed you put in the grinder for little to no difference in highs. If you don't use a grinder you'll still get basically the same high so why wouldn't you want to kief your buds?

  10. I accept your point. I guess I'll buy a grinder and check it out.

  11. Unless you cut your bud up finely with scissors, the grinder is still a better option cause grinded bud just burns much better than a bunch of small nuglets. The kief lost in the grinding process isn't enough to worry about, plus you can just smoke it later like you said.

  12. I'd be curious to see how much kief is actually collected in a clean grinder -per session. Like, if I put a .5 gram size nug of dankity-dank-dank in a brand-new, never-used grinder, then how much kief would it extract?

  13. Kief catcher is the only way to go, plus you can do so much with the collected kief.

i've never used a grinder, do you really get that much kief? i've asked around and most people who smoke 1oz or so a week say the kief is very minimal

  15. Your thinking into it way too much op.

U are not gonna have a noticable difference in the high if u grind your weed. U WILL have a noticable difference int he way it smokes if u dont grind it up though.

So the pros outweigh the cons in my opinion.

  16. The amount of kief you get REALLY depends on your bud. I got a half and got maybe a bowl's worth of kief out of the whole thing, and another half i got was pooping out tons of kief with every nug i ground.

  17. I would tell them to find some different bud. Not better bud per say but different, and then see how much they get. I think the ammount of kief on the bud has something to do with the drying/curing process

  18. Ill put this all to rest. My friend brought over his Space case 4 piece grinder. Said it cost him 50 bucks. I set three pieces of the grinder in isopropyl alcohol for 5 mins(not including the kief catcher). came back and rinsed it off with a little bit more iso, let the Iso evaporate for about 24 hours. He had .3 of kief stuck to the inside surfaces of his grinder. He has never once cleaned his grinder and has had it for about 4-5 months, grinding up about an eighth a week. I could have gotten even more if I went at it with a toothbrush.

I did this experiment solely based on people saying grinders dont steal your kief. I suggest anyone who doesnt believe me to try it themselves.

  19. The problem I foresee is with the real sticky icky weed. Seems like any grinder would gob up with sticky resin.

I have weed that will drop trichomes like grains of sugar they are so loose. And I have other strains that I almost literally can't break up with anything because it sticks to everything. The only way is to tear of the budlets and place them in the bowl.
