Bong parts list and what they do?

Discussion in 'Bongs, Dab Rigs, Bubblers, Water Pipes' started by papaduck, Apr 7, 2012.

  1. I've been searching for a breakdown on all the parts, attachments, etc of a bong and their function, but really haven't gotten anywhere.

Can someone maybe make a list, with pictures where these parts go and their purpose. I know what some do (the bowl obviously) but would like to see more.

Bowl, downstem, slide, defusser, cooler, pre-cooler, ashcatcher, shower head(?), carbon filters, clips, percolator...(i'm sure there's more) I'm really baffled and confused.

If there is more, please feel free to add. If someone has a crazy setup with all the attachments and want to describe and point out what part is what, I would be greatful!

    Thanks blades!:hello:

  2. The downstem is the tube that connects to the bowl, and enters the water. The smoke travels from the slide, to the downstem, to the water.
A slide is the bowl, on a bong.
Diffuser is holes, sometimes on a downstem to break the smoke up into bubbles, to allow a smoother hit.
Pre cooler is an attachment where the slide would go. It's a bowl with extra space to allow for diffusion, or percolation.
Ashcatcher is the same as a precooler, sometimes without diffusion or percolation.
A showerhead is a style of percolator.
Ice pinches are where the tube narrows to allow ice to be caught, and used to cool smoke.

  3. I know a lot about weed...but a recent trip to head shop, and I realize I don't know shit about modern bongs...but getting one soon

  4. I know. All this stuff makes me feel really old when I walk into a headshop. When I started smoking a bong was a bong was a bong, lol. The only differences were the materials and if it had a pull carb or a hole in the back that always spilled water on your clothes. Man things have come a long way. It's a good thing, but a lot to learn.

  5. Oh wow, almost forgot about carb'd bongs...

  6. this will help a lot of people.

  7. 1.) precooler/ ash catcher -- additional chamber to hold smoke and catch your ash therefore keeping your main piece cleaner. Ash catchers will usually have a percolator inside them.

2.) percolator -- device with slits/holes allowing for the smoke to break up into smaller bubbles therefore allowing more surface area of smoke to be cooled by the water. this is known as diffusion

3.) downstem -- allows the smoke to be channeled from the bowl/slide into the water. without down stems the smoke would go right above the water in your beaker/tube.

4.) carbon filter -- Mcfinn's makes a great one. Basically they replace ash catchers. the idea behind them is to hold activated carbon which filters out somewhere around 97% of the carcinogens and toxins, making the smoke not only healthier.. but significantly smoother

5.) Keck clips/K-clips -- clips that hold attachments into your piece so when you go to pull your bowl or carbon filter or ash catcher out your downstem stays in your piece. Often times when people go to pull bowls out, the downstem sticks and comes with it. and carbon filters often stick to bowls as well when people try to just pull the bowl out.. can lead to broken gear

6.) showerhead -- thats just a popular style of percolator. if you stare at it enough you should be able to figure out the logic behind it. basically the smoke is channeled into the center of the disc, then out the little slits on the sides.

7.) male joint vs. female joint -- a joint is an attachment to your piece where you either attach your bowl, dome, carbon filter, or ash catcher. male joints are designed to have bowls and domes slide on top of them and they are never rimmed. Female joints on the other hand are more traditional and are designed for things like bowls to go inside them, and they are rimmed. the logic behind male/female should be fairly obvious..

** the first pic is an ash catcher with a perc in it, also with a k-clip attached to it. the second pic is a downstem with a carbon filter attached to it. the third pic is a shower head percolator also known as a circ. the last pic is an ash catcher with a male joint on the back and a female joint on the front

hope this helps! and happy toking!!

  10. There's a sticky called "pipe terminology" in this bongs bubblers and waterpipes forum that describes it all very well.
