Question about HTG 250/400 watt HPS grow light

Discussion in 'Lighting' started by Nookies, Feb 26, 2012.

  1. Why is it that 250 watt HPS systems cost literally the same as a 400 watt hps? That makes no sense to me. I was unable to find any 250 watters cheaper than what a 400 watt cost. So obviously the most logical choice is to pay the same money for double the watts correct and a higher lumen output. Problem im having is not space but ventilation. If could be possible for me to get a cool tube and run that into the other closet.

I will only be growing 2-3 maybe 4..So I dunno if I should just get a 250 watt and use the two 100 watt CFL's I already have, or dish out the extra money to get the 400 watt cool tube :S

The closet is 4.5 ft X 4.5 ft and 8 ft high

Also, HTG Supply - HTGSupply 400 watt High Pressure Sodium Grow Light

Is that a good product? Reliable? Safe? Decent lumen output? Decent life span? Any risk of the magnetic ballast going boom?

  2. I own the HTG 400 watt grow light and I have had it running almost non-stop for close to 3 years with absolutely no problems...so yes, from my experience with it, I would say well made and reliable.

  3. That's the ballast that came with my tent setup. It's ok, the only thing I don't like about it is that the cords don't unplug if you need them to. This is a pain in the ass if you want to be able to interchange the hood. The cord going to the light is stuck to the ballast, not like the unpluggable cords that come with nicer ballasts.

It's not that bad, just an inconvenience, and you have to re-wire the cord from the ballast to the light when you switch to the cool tube.

I've only had mine for a few weeks, but so far, everything's good with it besides that one little problem. I'd definitely go with the 400w.

  4. Dude. The most reasonable choice would be to get a 1000w light, or 2, 600w lights in that area.

    I've got 2 flowering tents, each 36x20x62. One has a 400w, the other a 600.

Man if you've got 4.5x4.5 ft, you're gonna wanna throw some fucking light at that shit.

Just think, if it costs you an extra couple hundred to make it big time, you'll get that back a few times over first time you chop.

Don't forget to order a bunch of big ass fans.

    Best of luck!!!!

(also you can get lights cheaper on ebay, alot cheaper, and I've been running one for almost 3 years now w/ no problems)

  5. I dont think you have to re-wire anything...you simply detatch the socket assembly and bolt that to your new reflector...no re-wiring involved when I switched reflectors.

  6. I have to re-wire mine...it doesn't have those weird 3-pronged outlets that my digital ballast has.

Oh WAIT! You mean take out the actual socket that goes in the hood? I didn't even think of that...lol I just spliced the wires onto the cool tube socket.

.....why do I always have to do shit the hard way....

  7. Yep...thats what I mean. The socket assemblies are all interchangable and made to fit all reflectors. Thats why they are attatched with wing nuts for easy removal.

  8. Or you can buy the adapter that makes it fit for like $20. There are only 2 main kinds of ballast connections, and I think the "gorwbright" ones use the other connection.

HTG supply should have that wire. I would never open my ballast man. That's just too much juice to fuck with.

  9. Naw I didn't open it up...just detached the wire from the socket, then spliced it onto the new socket.

I wouldn't dare fuck with the actual ballast...

  10. Personally I fucking hate that they don't have their own ON/OFF switch on the ballast, or any their of UFO LED lights either. Other than that, yeah you get what you pay for.

  11. Please list the link to ebay's categories for purchasing lamps etc. I am unfamiliar with ebay. Thank you

  13. Just do a search for like 400watt grow light
    600watt grow light
    1000watt grow light
or use some key words like
    HPS or HID Light.
    example
    hps | eBay
or use a specific name of the ballast or type of light your looking for. Like Lumatek etc.
