Your thoughts on therapy?

  1. Hey City,

Lately I've considered the idea of seeking a therapist or something similar. I just feel like I could benefit from it- or from what I've heard from people it has been beneficial. But my source is not the best.

So I figure I'd ask you guys and gals- whats your thoughts on therapy and how do you form that opinion (like did you try therapy or is it just your personal thought)...

  2. If you feel you need it, I strongly urge you to see one. The worst mistake is thinking you can figure out your problems on your own. Therapists work wonders.

  3. haha, its not like im on the verge of going insane. I just don't talk to many people about things that actually run through my head. I hate talking to people I know about things that are happening.

I'm always thinkning, it's annoying- I can't stop I always have something going through my mind. Just random things....

  4. I wasn't implying you were insane - haha. I was merely suggesting we all need help sometimes.

I have the same problem. You tend to over-analyze the fuck out of things, huh?

  5. fuck getting a therapist if you intend to go down this costly road get a tried 'n true shrink with a medical degree

from personal experience with a single head doctor lol they're usually full of themselves lack any real insight into chemical problems and dun dun...dun they put you on happy pills with a minimal effort

  6. yea, nothing is just simple. There has to be an explanation to everything- and I have to understand it.

I also think about my future- and where I am going, more so lately. This could be because my birthday is coming up.

I'm always worried that I'm not doing well enough- I can always do better and can improve.

  7. I've been to a couple of therapists and expensive ones at that. It was mainly for family reasons. Parents divorced when i was young and things just werent going too healthy for me.

I feel, though, the therapists i went to didnt give me any new information that i didnt already know or hear. I only enjoyed them because i was able to vent about things, just talk about anything and it was cool and doing so i felt alot better. I wouldnt compare it to talking to a close friend or girlfriend though, much more. Also acted as a 3rd person between the fighting and arguments we would talk about with my mom and dad which i thought was the best thing i got out of it.

  8. It's almost more normal to go to therapy, than to not go. I look at it as going to the doctor or dentist. If your back or your tooth hurts, they can help ease the pain, you can't do everything on your own. I've been to therapists, yes, and I can't say they solved all my problems, but it helped ease the pain. Hella people be going to psychs these days, it's accepted and it should be. The troubles of the mind are as important as the body, if not more so.

  9. I would go just to have someone as a 3rd party u could talk to. They let u talk and u can just vent about anything.

  10. Ive been to a few therapists. The thing I like most about them, is that I thought I was the only one going through what I was going through, my therapist quickly pointed out it was something many people go through wich put my mind at ease. Plus like eveyone else has already said, you get to vent to someone you don't really know and it can be really rewarding.

  11. I dont believe in Therapy that pshyco mumbo jumbo is not for me I know my problems and I find out how I solve them myself with a little help from G.O.D thats all I need dont forget the four plants in my closet thats my therapy too lol:smoking:

  12. I've considered going to a therapist for the same reasons as you, but I don't know shit about where to find a therapist and how much they cost and all that.

  13. I've gone to countless therapists in my life. I've never seen the same one more then twice.

    Here's my take on therapists:

They do work, ONLY if you have an open mind. If mom or pop, or judge, or anyone is making you see a therapist, it's not going to work. Trust me on this one... but it sounds like you want to go for yourself, so we don't need to worry about this. The next big issue I find is, a LOT of them are so fucking transparent it's not even funny. I've gone into a few of the initial meetins with new ones and just completely read their tactics and fucked around with them... that's kinda fun. hah. But, if you find one that clicks with you, that you work well with, then there is potential for a WHOLE lot of positive to come from the experience. unfortunately, I've only met one whom I actually liked. But it's a process, don't think just because you're going to a therapist that they are going to help, you need to go to a few, and find one who actually clicks with you. DOn't stop at the first one.

I really should be going to one, but alas it just never works out for me for specific reasons. but that's not saying they're not good, I've seen the wonders of therapists, and they do work... if you keep an open mind.

My mother is a PRIME example of someone who a therapist has done wonders for.

If you listen to Howard Stern, he's had nothing but praise for his therapist since his divorce.

Just gotta find one you click with, and then let time take it's course... it's not going to be a one visit fix...

  14. i see a therapist now. i find it to be helpful and when you are in one of those "ruts" it makes you feel a lot better.

my therpaist recommeneded a book that i've been reading called "Feeling Good" by David Burns. It's rather lengthy (about 700 pages) and i've read through about the first 100 and it's significantly changed the way i feel and think (for the better). i would recommend that everyone check that book out. seriously, if there is ever one book you read let it be that one.

  15. Thanks guys for the replies.

I think I'm going to talk to my doctor and have him reccomend a few and go from there.

  16. in my personal experience, a therapist is best as an advisor, not someone that tells you what to do. they do give advice, but you need to follow it loosely and not let them get into your head. remember, a shrink is trained in getting inside people's heads and making them think shit, so be careful and listen with a halfopen ear.

  17. How much do therapists cost? And where do I find them at? Do I just look through the yellow pages or what?

  18. Do you have health insurance? See if it covers it... and if you do, the best place is to start with a list that your health insurance company can give you which they work with...

  19. lol mine is so obvious but I sort of take pleasure in rattling him with shots of sarcasm flying his way or the odd 'stop cutting me off like you're somehow gonna throw me off enough to blubbler to ya bout my socalled problems lol

  20. Like someone else asaid, if you think you need help, go and get it; nobody else can do this for you.

Therapy really covers a broad spectrum of treatments, but the first type you will pribably try is either ounselling/talk therapy, or cognitive behavioural therapy. CBT is extremely useful in helping us to understand why we feel the way we do, why we have certain thought patterns etc. This is crucial when trying to unravel issues from ones past, for example.

I'd highly recommend it; it sometimes takes a little time to find a therapist thatc an get the most out of you, but it is worth it. The right therapist will be able to help you immensely, but you have to be 100% honest with them. Nothing you tel lthem will come as a shock or be met with negativity.

    Good luck!
