are there people that exist like me? im willing to bet there are considering who i am talking to...alright, im the kinda guy who likes GOOD music, something with talent, people who actually play instuments and make arangments of music....look, only some of you will understand, others might be a loss cause - i dont know. so basicly i like all kinds of music but i only like what is good, not what MTV, the radio, my friends, or pop cluture tells me to like...so im sorry but i think lil john sucks, and for that matter much of the rap that is popular, that is played in clubs sucks, i think that the song "drop it like its hot" by snoop dogg sucks... so am i alone? it seems like i must be at a loss, its like its a disadvantage that i dont like popular music and actually have a taste when it comes to what i listen to. i dont know, its lots of built up frustation after hearing the same shit songs over and over at parties etc, and people saying how they love these songs. i cant enjoy parties as much as everyone else because i dont like the shit music they play...whats up with that? i came back from the record store today with some obscure artists like tom waits, morphine, some steve vai and some classic rock and i was view as weird... i like being weird do you?
it's not that i like being weird, but it is that i am naturally a weird sort (in the eyes of many, but not all, seeing as how others share my "weird" views). I'm that kind of person that you're talking about, but i realize why people enjoy pop music. it has good hooks, and is marketable. you can dance to it too. I don't like when people play it at parties, but at dances, i'm all up for it.
Tom Waits, Morphone, obscure? I think not! Yeah, I like music played by people not machines. I think 99.9% of rap sucks. I think 99.9% of metal sucks. I think 99.9% of techno sucks. You ask me...Steve Vai sucks balls...he sure can jerk off on that guitar but he's got nooooo feeling. I'd rather listen to Aqua with Barbie Girl than Vai crap. And G3...Vai, Malmsteen, Satriani..don't even get me started on those wankers... I appreciate good music and I prefere artists who know the connection between am and G7 I do consider my pc an instrument but it wouldn't be enough to create a whole song. All music is all things to all people , taste is simply a matter of opinion. To lable any music genre crap is to presume a superior position , to be honest nobody has the right to decide if somebody elses taste is shit because that person may believe the same about your choices. I hate all the Black metal and death metal fans who spout nonsense barely audible drivel about hate and death like they are diciples of manson or something. I hate boy band , cover releasing nancyboys, or girls for that matter. I hate Marilyn Manson (cheap second rate Alice Cooper wannabe). I hate what I consider crap female singers (Whitney fuckin' Houston) . But these groups and singers DO have lots of fans and I believe they should be allowed to enjoy whatever music they want. I am not in any mood to quote and edit and all that shit... so bear with me. There are a few flaws in that first post (whose ever it was)... first of all, I agree and feel I am in the same boat. I also agree MTV is shit. You have to realize, however, that there are a few bands that show up on that station that play their own instruments and make their own living. Take Simple Plan, for example... they are completely talentless, but at least they make their own music verses someone like Britany Spears who doesnt do anything but sing and sell her body. Britany doesnt write her own lyrics, make her own music, or any of that shit... she is thrown into the hands of a vocal trainer a couple days a week and then she goes into a studio to sing the words on the paper. That is her life. The same not only goes from MTV, but for the radio, of course. So, point being, just dont dismiss everything. Secondly, there was talk about people using machines for music and the such... I suggest you take a listening to Nine Inch Nails. A lot of his work is done with regular instruments, but then altered heavily by computers... plus, not to mention, a lot of the music is done on computers as well. (I say "his work" because Trent Reznor does all or most the music himself with some help from others). Reznor is hailed as one of the best musicians of this time and has been for the past decade or two. When you think about it, using computers and machines is necessary for music... if you havent noticed, the everyday lineup of a band -- guitar, bass, drums, and vocals -- is getting repeative (take a look at today's rock, for example). And what do you think people thought in the 50s when the electric guitar was being introduced?
to elaborate on my first idea...i have found that some people dont know what the fuck they are talking about when it come to music. they simply go by what is current and the in thing to listen to. its hard to put into words, but let me give you an example: a person owns cds of recent popular bands that may be talented, and some music that a person like me might consider to be crap, but then they act like they are qualified to be a well rounded music listener by playing some of the jimi hendrix or led zeppelin songs we have all heard played a million times on the radio. these people will play all along the watchtower and say "ohh man this is sooo awesome hendrix is a golden god" ...well ok sure he may well be, im not contesting that, but i am contesting the fact that they did not know that bob dylan wrote the song....these people are actually clueless. its the same story every time they fall into the hype and dont make decisions for themselves or actually care enough to their research or make an effort to listen to other music of a pervious and much greater era. its almost like if this person hears a classic rock song they have not heard on the radio they dont like it. if i were to play "Country Honk" by the rolling stones the person would be more likely to want to hear a song like "start me up" or "Brown Sugar" ...something they have heard before and might go as far to tell me that song sucks, but they like the stones? im like "hey man, its not all about whats popular...these people made other music and there are other people besides zeppelin, hendrix and the stones that you need to explore, have you heard of joe cocker for instance?" but inevitably they will just go back to listening to i dont know...[insert over played, over popularized, MTV studio engineered band here] do you know what i mean?
Yeah, but instuments in the hands of morons doesn't mean a thing! I think too many metal bands have lost their brains banging their heads against a wall. Man, I grew up in the suburbs with fast cars and long hair and metal. The whole scene was a joke. The cars, the women, the drugs, the music.
Ah, I see what you mean. That is rather intersting... and thought provoking. I have sometimes thought if I am like that... what you explained. Its kind of hard where the line is crossed between someone saying to you "Hey this album is cool, give it a listen" and then you like the album, and finding it yourself. Most of the music I listen to was/is influenced by my friends. For example, one of my friends was getting into Phish a lot and they lent me Phish's album "Farmhouse", and I liked it... now, Phish is one of my favorite bands. So, how am I to know if I like Phish because two of my friends do or if I really, truely, like them? (rehtorical question) But I guess most of that might not even matter... I mean, if the music makes you happy and hits a cord in you, then go with it.
Maybe I misinterpreted the wort obscure...I meant wicked music, not mainstream. And I wouldn't call Moloko mainstream because they're sold in many stores

music is limitless, and universal and always evolving. Each generation has the mainstream type music that is wrapped up in a neat package to be sold as a certain image and gets get all the air play and attention of people for a short time, and then is thrown away and forgotten about to make way for the next "big thing", and then there is the music that just is what it is and lasts for generations to come because its just good music. Unfortunatly the music that actually lasts, and isnt forgotten about after 3 months doesnt occure as often as mainstream music, which is understandible. Its also understandible why its so easy for people to buy into mainstream music because very few people are born with excelent musical tastes. I remember before i started listening to classic rock, blues, jazz, and funk, i watched mtv and i listened to a lot of cheesy shit-ass music before i actually got into likeing real music. Im glad i made the choice to listen good REAL music instead of staying hooked on mtv, so now i can look donw on those who are. But you cant expect everyone to know who jimi hendrix is and how great his music is, think of how much money mtv would loose due to people comaring the state that music is in nowadays to what it was like back then....MTV thrives off of musical ignorance.
I feel what you are trying to say, but you have to understand people man. I myself play the guitar. As a musician, I put a lot of time and energy in my life trying to better play and understand music. Because of this, I have learned to appreciate good musicians, rather than just good, catchy tunes. Before I played guitar, I would just listen to anything that sounded good to me. But after I started getting into really understanding music, I learned to not only listen to things that sound good, but also to appreciate how the people behind the music go about making the sounds they do. I think its much more rewarding to listen to music this way, but that's not everybody's bag.
