Mr. Darwin M, Ochs, thank you. I've wanted to write into the paper for awhile now, but no issue struck me as important enough as your letter. As soon as I finished reading it I went to the computer, sat down and wrote my response.

1. First of all, I'm not entirely sure where you get your information, but it's been documented for (atleast) over 25 years that pot provides a multitude of therapeutic value. The earliest article that I could find (with only a few minutes of searching on Google, try it out sometime) is the report of a study from 1982 by the Institue of Medicine, supporting Medical Marijuana and endorsing its value as a (and I use this term lightly) "drug."
And I quote, "Cannabis and its derivatives have shown promise in the treatment of a variety of disorders. The evidence is most impressive in glaucoma, where their mechanism of action appears to be different from the standard drugs; and in the nausea and vomiting of cancer chemotherapy, where they compare favorably with phenothiazines."

These same results (and more!) have been shown and proven in many studies since then, look it up.

2. "All legalization of medicinal marijuana does is put more drugs on the street." False false false. I think you're getting medicinal marijuana and street marijuana a little confused here, but that's ok. The most obvious reason that weed is prevelent on the streets is because of the absurd laws regarding its legality. When I was in high school, I smoked pot because it was far easier to obtain and buy than alcohol. Getting our hands on booze was far too much of a hassle (getting someone to buy it for us is always an awkward thing to ask, or heaven forbid grabbing a bottle and sprinting out of our local Rite-Aid as fast as we could before anyone saw) when I could instead just meet up with a friend and have a joint already rolled faster than you can say "legalize marijuana already."

3. You also mentioned that marijuana should remain a Schedule I drug, but since it's obviously been proven that marijuana does have certain or atleast limited medical effects (you do know the three requirements of a Schedule I drug, right? Hint: marijuana doesn't fit into the three requirements), it obviously needs to be reclassified as a Schedule II drug.

I don't even want to get into the debate on why alcohol and tobacco and prescription pills and legal drugs and illegal drugs (and caffeine and even aspirin) are ALL more deadly than little ol' weed (combined they kill easily over 550,000 Americans each ad every year, while the death count on marijuana still stands at 0), so I won't bother.

Mr. Ochs, with all due respect, you strike me as an individual with a strict moral code, and that's fair. But honestly, if you're going to spout your opinions on a public forum, you better be damn ready to know what you're talking about. Thank you.

I didn't say I didn't know, I was merely prompting the op to put forth something in print for those who may be from oh, say, South America, or Austria, or Mars, so they might know...
