Has anyone ever heard of this guitarist? I have been listening to him for a while now but I've noticed not many people know of him. He is the God of guitar Gods, better than anyone else. He'll definitely blow your mind. btw his name is pronounced ing-vay molm-steen, in case your wondering.
yeah ahah this happens everytime. someone finds a new guitarist like yngwie and just assumes hes the best in the entire world, which is untrue he's unreal on the axe, its just he plays basically the same scales in all of his songs. he's still awesome to listen to though.
Well, either way, he's ONE of the best. The way I see it, there's 3 types of the highest level of guitarists... the guitar gods, actually. At least as far as anything somewhat related to 'rock' music is concerned. You have Hendrix and SRV at the very top, in a league all their own. Then you have a few that You consider better than everyone else, almost purely because they're your favourites. And then you have all the others that are almost unrankable against eachother because they're obviously exceedingly talented and unique, but each have their own thing going... and it wouldn't be fair to rank them when they're playing all different styles. I'd so no matter what, you could get probably the top 10 guitarists on a list using that kind of... uhh... whatever the hell it is that I was just talking about.
Yngwie Malmsteen is very very fast...as fast as almost any...but to me it's kind of boring listening to people rip through the same scales over and over again. It doesn't speak of progress. I'd rather listen to a stylish guitar piece with 4 notes than a cliched rip a thon with a million notes. Anyway, it's all just preference.
He's a dick. BUt very good. I like that dude that does Speed Kills, whose name keep popping in and out of my head MICHAEL ANGELO there we go. The things with these guys is that when you become THAT good, it seems that you lose all emotion in your playing and it becomes "YES THIS IS GOOD BECAUSE IT IS FAST AND FOLLOWS MUSIC THEORY ALSO IT IS HARD TO PLAY RIGHT" That's why I love people like Dimebag... really skilled but still have feeling. Obviously would be shredded by Yngwie or Michael Angelo but I'd still say Dime's better. Same with Zakk Wylde. He's still got feeling.
I think David Gilmour is the god of feel I never EVER gave a lick any props just for being fast or following theory. Shit, ask Hendrix how much he worried about theory. I've never been a fan of fast guitar anyway, even though I may admit it was fucking awesome. I prefer getting to listen and almost think about each note before the next one is gone. Dime is the exception though, he's a god. I need to listen to more of Wylde though... The problem is actually quite the reverse of what you said Metalstonerking.... at least in my opinion. It's not that he had feel when we was getting good and then as soon as he pretty much became considered as a god that he could just play as fast as possible and say it's good because it's fast. The problem is he became held in such high reguards BY playing that fast and following theory. People always liked that, so he never had any reason to try and play with some real feel. (I'm not saying specifically Yngwie, because for all I know in his early years he may have sounded like a Gilmour-clone... but that just seems how it seems to go in general)
Yngwie just knows how to play pentatonics and phrygian scales really fast. Listen to Kurt Rosenwinkel or Wayne Krantz if you want to hear some good guitar playing. Remember, just because someone can "shred" doesn't mean they're a guitar god. It means that a metronome was their only friend for about 3 years
Of course I've heard of him man, I play guitar. He's allright, but he's not the greatest. Buckethead can play way faster than him. Also, yngwie is not versatile at all. You can only get so much mileage out of an A minor harmonic scale.
see there it is again, not to offend you or anyone else, i mean srv and hendrix were indeed great, but there are guitarists nowadays that would show them up, its true. people have learned from what they played, and improved upon that. For example, some of these guitarists include rusty cooley, jason becker as JohnnyBlunt said, just a shame what happened to him, zakk wylde. there are others but this is strickly within the rock genre. and you talk about them not giving a shit about theory or anything, which may be true, but they did give a shit about knowing their instruments and fretboards inside and out, whether or not they had formal lessons.
ok, i shouldnt have said hes the best, but he still is crazy good, and people have made some pretty good points too. i just wanted more people to know about him because whenever i talk to someone about him, they have no clue who he is.
I really don't believe you can show up the original. I know there are guitarists outside of the genre that probably could teach them a thing or two, well good on them. But as far as the guitarists you speak of, they still don't even come close to comparing. Listen to some SRV and Hendrix in depth a little more. I never said anything about them not giving a shit about theory. I just said asked how much they worried about it. Everything still needs a base, but guitarists like Malmsteen, at least from what I've seen, tend to stay away from anything that doesn't fall under musical theory, even if it sounds good. If SRV played something and he thought he sounded good, he was gonna play it weather it had anything to do with music theory. But he would have most likely derived it out of something related to music theory anyway. Lessons don't matter much in my opinion, either way you can be great. I think those without lessons tend to be a bit more unique, it may take them longer obviously though. And of course they knew their instruments inside and out, I've only been actually playing guitar for about 2 and a half years now and I have already made it a point long ago to know every inch of my guitar even if I was blind. I may as well be holding air. That's just commonplace among any good musician.

Hey, Yes, Yngwie is talented. He is quite an arrogant ass, however. I have a few of his cd's of which I usually just pass over when going through my music collection. To me, feel is everything as has already been mentioned. I guess I just prefer some good ol' Steve Vai over this guy, but that's just me. Although, he does do a pretty good rendition of Jimi's Spanish Castle Magic. Of course, Jimi can never be truly duplicated, IMO. Peace. -Timmy "Making music is a virus, fortunately there is no cure."
hes ok but hes all speed. ive heard a bunch of his material and i really cant get into him.. his music doesnt really have any feeling.. he seems to just play fast and does 3-6 string sweep picks alot.. thats all.. my best friend is a huge fan of his and everytime he pops in a cd its the same ol' stuff... its the exact reason why i like buckethead so much,. unlike alot of guitarists he plays so many diferent types of music and isnt just a shredder hes played tons of diferent genres. but then again if u have 120+ cds u have to be able to play a ton of different genres
