Would ya use a rheostat with fan?

  1. Hey all... Well I've got to get going on ventalation work. Thinking of buying large centrifugal fan. making a another small vented housing for the fan, and placing it in the attic. Also, I could use a rheostat on the fan to control the temps, right? Any ideas?

  2. I was wondering the same thing, but then I thought the fan may have to b made to handle different resistances ? But at the grow store I go to they usually sell a variable resistor type.( I think a rheostat is the same thing?)

but got one that just kicks on when it gets to the temp I set it at.and I can also manage nite temps with it..85 bucks. What's a rheostat run?

  3. It all depends on the type of motor being used. Best to check with the mfg as to how to control speed (if it is even possible).

  4. No. Don't use a rheostat it will burn up your fan. You can use a dimmer switch since modern dimmers are built from silicon-controlled rectifiers. Or get a purpose built "fan speed controller" from your hydro store.
