6x8 would be 48 sq ft

    20-50watts per sq ft minimum

    HID bulbs will cover:

    250watts
    5 - 12 sq ft

    400watts
    8 - 20 sq ft

    600watts
    12 - 30 sq ft

    1000watts
    20 - 50 sq ft

    Approximate lumen output for HID's

    watts....Metal Halide......High Pressure Sodium
    250..........20,000...................28,000
    400..........32,000...................40,000
    600.............-........................85,000
    1000........110,000.................140,000

  3. what about the height if it is 5 to 5-6 high that would bring the light down to about 4 and a half to 5 ft that wouldnt be too close to plants in pots ?

there's no set rules to growing although you will have to make the best of what you have. You can spend hours on here reading about how this person done this and how this person done that. It's all trial and error, your going to want the light about a foot or so above the plants not to close other wise it will burn them up. I've never used 1000w so you might even need to be a greater distance with all that heat. You might also want to do some reading on the scrog method. This can help with limited space like that... When you pick your seeds try to find plants that are shorter and this will help also.

Here's a great thread about ScrOG
    http://forum.grasscity.com/advanced-growing-techniques/48363-scrog-method.html

also I'm that's doesn't make sense to ya search for scrog journals. Seeing pictures after reading that makes for a better understanding.
