Yeah what above poster said. I don't know much in this area, but the work in tequila is just a worm that's tequila saturated.

The worm in mescal is an old Aztec tradition. Eating it probably won't hurt you but won't do anything, either.

I've had it before.
Though traditionally it's in mescal which is kind of like tequila, bit stronger and much harder to throw back IMO, though it's more or less a "mother" of tequila made only in certain regions.
Anyways some tequilas have it in there, not sure why, probably just for show.
As I understand it, it was largely because they infested the cactus type plants the drinks were made from - and were left in. I guess it became tradition.

So the "worm" which isn't really a worm eats the stuff the drink is made from, and tends to be a little potent on account of being a "sponge".
It doesn't do anything greatly crazy, just adds a bit of a kick and some novelty to a shot.

 

Theres bo worm in tequilla .. Its in mezcal, and its a larva. And yea, if you drink the whole bottle of shitty mezcal to get to the worm youll be drunk, but the worm itself wont do shit.
