World Police...?

i guess you're also here to tell me the sky is in fact BLUE.

we're an empire. thats what empires do. how many military instalations do we have around the world? last time i checked its somewhere around 8 bagillion. we have "moral obligations" to impose our will. or are you not moral? you're not are you. go to church why dont cha?

 

dude just for conversation..........you the first I ever saw refer to the US as an empire....Ive heard of the British Empire and the Japanise Empire....Where did you get America the Empire from?....America the nation......America the country.... North and south America the continents.....What about the Moral obligation to our own people?....

Im not lookin for a flame fest .....but.....going to church doesnt solve much more then a personal need to congregate with others of like beliefs....Morals can be found in even complete atheists.....

we are an empire because of the thousands of military bases around the globe. we may not do the whole conquest thing w/ other countries but we sure as hell set up bases where ever we step foot on. and that is the empire part. man america is in every fucking country. bases i mean, ya know. do you see any japanese bases in wisconsin....or how about british bases in oklahoma. we're the only country to set up shop where ever we please.

moral obligations....that was the line bush used to rally up the country. the church thing was a joke good sir.

 

he's not speaking in terms of the definition of empire, he's comparing to those such as the romans. and you're absolutely right, we shouldn't have the power to police over other countries. we're all equal or at least that's what we say, right. but some countries just don't have it together, and those are the ones that shouldn't tell us what not to do when they can't even hold a stable government. what's right to do, isn't always right. or maybe i should say, what's best to do, isn't always right.

 

Yeah, it is pretty nuts. But then again, we are better off then quite a few countries out there. That may be my American ego speaking, but we're a pretty gigantic country, speaking metaphorically. China is going to dwarf us, though, in the next hundred years.

 

We're sort of an empire, I guess. I mean, there are territories that we "own" (U.S. Virgin Islands, for example) but are not part of the 50 states. That said, calling America an empire would sorta be a disrespect to the British Empire and all the other real Empires... they actually explored and conquered foreign lands (all of Africa used to belong to a few European countries until the mid 1900s), we just have bases in a lot of locations. Plus you make it sound like we're not wanted, often we're there as a result of the UN wanting us there (talk about global police--the UN wants to rule the world and tries to make it sound like every country that doesn't agree with the council is bad, in reality the UN gets a disproportionate amount of money from the US yet the US has the same vote as everyone else).

Look, I'm not saying the US doesn't need to pull out of a lot of places, but we're straining our troops and supplies just fighting in Iraq and to some extent in Afgahnistan... hardly an all-conquering empire if you ask me. We may have political power and technology, but we don't have endless supplies.

when/if it happens, it'll be a confidence shattering day when the united states isn't on top anymore. to citizens of it like me, at least.

 

America isn't the only country in the world to have bases all over the place.........we have bases from Australia to the falkland islands, we have people in the south pole............we used to run 3/4 of the world...........not bad for a country the size of one of Americas states...........and then once the locals started to really fight back i think we realised, hold on this is wrong..............and over the years countries fought and also asked to be independent again, i.e. pakistan, India, Australia ,Canada etc..............but the changes that were made are still in place today, i have no doubt India/Pakistan would be back in the stone age if it wasn't for Britain, they still use our old machinery from the 40-70's.......trains, boliers, nuclear plants etc...... and dare i say even the U.S. as most was populated by Western Europeans especially the Scottish and the Irish, and built by those same people, ie Carnegie.................Britain realised then that there can be no world police, no one will allow it, and wars cannot be fought on every front..............i don't ever mean to bash on America, just the govt's that come from time to time, who's foreign policies affect me, after all my say's worth nothing in the U.S..................just as the U.S.'s say should be worth nothing in the U.K..............we look westward and theink, America seems like a good place to live, lots of sun or snow if you want it........good wage maybe, opertunity at least.........and then we look at your govt and think, hell no............they interfere in peoples lives too much, and then i noticed how much the Amendments that were made for your own protection from these people are being dissolved slowly by those same people.............it may be home of the brave, no doubt ther's fight in yous..........but it is certainly not land of the free.............not any more.........Peace out..........Sid
