Witchgrass (Better than the union)

  1. I am halfway through a book entitled "Witchgrass" by Dave Wilkinson and it is by far the best analysis at how much of a failure the drug war is I have seen collected into one place. Although it is in the form of a novel it goes incredibly deep into personal freedom, privacy and the corruption behind the drug war. The author Dave Wilkinson wrote ordinances which produced the first municipal vote for marijuana legalization since the 1970s. The vote of Starks, Maine in 1992 was years ahead of California's Proposition 215 in 1996 and Maine's Medical Marijuana Act of 1999. T

This is a small passage that I just finished reading. It is a person giving a speech about the drug war.

"No nation, even Nazi Germany, Stalinist Russia or South Africa, has ever imprisoned more of its population than the United States has. And we are building more prisons, passing harsher laws.
Our national leaders say they are protecting us from drugs, saving us from some great, vaguely defined peril. They say they are preventing crime and getting rid of villains. They say they are concerned about our health, our safety. That is why they have declared War on Drugs. To make us safe. To make us healthy.
Any cursory look at the facts shows the result to be exactly the opposite. What has all this to do with religion? I'm drawing you this picture so anyone, I hope, can see the absurdity of the claim that the drug war is based upon any kind of concern with the health and safety of Americans. So what is the real reason? Somebody's version of morality, in other words, a religious motive.
There is no other way to explain the drug war. It is a moral crusade, racism, ideology, politics. It cannot be justified in any terms of health or public safety, but it fits right into a religious outrage at certain kinds of personal behavior. "

Also by better than the union I mean how eye opening it is to how ridiculous these laws are. The union is obviously an amazing movie.

  2. If you want to reach the masses, you have to make a movie, sadly.

  3. I don't think it's all false morals. It HAS to be profit.

  4. Sounds like a good book man

  5. Let's all save up our piggy banks and change jars and get Michael Moore to make a documentary :D regardless of your feelings for Michael Moore, you have to admit, he can strike a chord with the masses :smoke:

  6. He's a brilliant film maker for sure. I doubt he would make a pot movie though, unless it became way more mainstream.

  7. Yea, but most movies about marijuana are stupid like Pineapple Express, only going to be enjoyed by people stoned. Truth Documentaries/movies about marijuana won't make it to the big screen. Straight to netflix or dvd.

  8. I'm not so sure it can truly be said prohibition is for religion. The few quotes from the Bible I have read have been in favor of marijuana. But I do agree that some zealot with an agenda or some moral crusader is a big part of why it is illegal. I just don't know why since there is no proof marijuana is illegal.

So let me get this straight. 100 years ago we could smoke all we pleased and take a pass to heaven. But 90 years ago to present it is now a hell sentence. Sure.

Although no man (or woman, who I think is the crusader) is righteous. Someone somehwere thinks they are righteous, so they inflict their beliefs on others to get the world to become the way they want.

For people who aren't completely sure why Marijuana is illegal look up a man called Harry J. Anslinger.

When he was around, they used some of the dumbest scare tactics I've ever seen. They made a movie back in the day that showed people on the "wacky weed" or "dope" as they called it, killing people because it made them go insane.

Religion was used as part of their scare tactics. It doesn't state in the bible that marijuana is bad. It's the exact opposite actually. Scare tactics and racism is why marijuana is illegal. All you have to do is read about mr. Anslinger.

  10. Please don't ever associate Michael Moore's movies and REAL documentaries. Real documentaries show the facts and let the people decide their view. Moore shows what he claims to be facts and makes up your mind for you.

  11. Sort of like what you did with that post? That book seems interesting but good luck getting an anti-marijuana person to read an entire novel about marijuana legalization.

  12. Yes but I'm not sure what that has to do with my post but I'd have to agree it'd be hard to get an anti-marijuana person to read a book about legalization
