Winter ventilation

Discussion in 'Grow Room Design/Setup' started by 187Budz, Sep 4, 2017.

  1. Hello quick newbie question.
Setting up a winter shed grow using 400w hps single 5g bubbleponic method.
Was wondering if its ok to turn off my ventilation during dark period (which will be in the day) to try to keep the heat in the shed (Using small heater to help).
The shed is insulated and is roughly 7Lx4Wx5.5H feet, but will be devided so actual grow area will be 2x4x5.5 ft (which will be further insulated). The exhaust and intake will be drawn into/from remaining shed area so im not drawing in from direct canadian winter temps.
Will the lack of CO exchange during the 8 hr off period hurt plant growth during veg and 12 during flower.
New to indoor growing and trying to fine tune everything/have all my ducks lined up before my first attempt.
Ive read other peoples forums on other sites but like usual some say sure some say no and some say its fine during veg but not okay during flower (mold risk).
Going to grow LSD, which is said to be mold resistant.

  2. Insulate well and keep a heater on a temp meter... on your intake just put a restrictor you can adjust...

  4. Pulling cold air into a warm environment is going to create moisture...which would/could lead to moldy environment...which you don't want. Pulling through that first room should help to mediate temperature of incoming air, but there is really no way to know what kind of problems you'll have to deal with until you put it together and run it through a winter. As far as hurting your plants to shut down all that air movement during the dark period, no. We don't run ours when the lights are off. We do, however, keep very good constant temps and lots of big air movement around the plants down on floor level. Keeping good air movement going all the time will lower the humidity in the room and lessen the chance of getting mold too. Insulate it up really well and you should be able to pull it off without too much trouble. TWW

  5. Thanks for the answers guys.
Yes im getting a clip fan and heater and the idea is to pull air from the secondary room.
Ive done my research as much as i can (3 months roughly) while i was purchasing my equipment. I have so many unchecked varialbles as no one has a set up just like mine so most of which is just going to be trial and error. And hope for the best.

  6. I veg in the open part of the room and flower in a closed room in that room. Thats where i pull from and the intake goes in the open part. Hummidity is a tad lower in the flower room. Veg dont care

  7. I have been growing in room built inside an unheated pole barn. I exist in a climate that is probably similar to yours (it can get down to -20F in my Barn).

Not just in the dark period...I pretty much shut off my exhaust/intake for weeks at a time and the only Co2/ air refreshement they get is when I open the door. They do fine.

  8. DO get a variac speed controller for your exhaust fan...as of course we would prefer some air turnover when we can.

  9. Get a thermostatic outlet ("lux win 100"), set it to "cool", and plug your exhaust fan into it. Adjust the thermostat on the heater so it isn't kicking the thermostat on every few minutes (once per hour is plenty enough to refresh co2)

Program your temp and it's like a relief valve for heater and lights, with the benefit of refreshing your co2 as often as you decide.
