Will smoke shops except birth certificate?

If you look 18 wouldn't they just let you get it or is it policy?

 

I've never been carded at my LHS... but I'm pretty sure most of them do card, as they don't want to lose their license and shit.

Weird, considering in my county you have to be 19 years old to purchase "tobacco products" yet I'm only 18.

I started off buying small things, like a pack of papes or a pack of screens.... Once the guy got to know me I picked up a piece.

 

You can, actually. You could also use your passport if you wanted.

 

Any form of identification with a birthdate on it should work. The guys at your LHS are probably gonna get a good chuckle out of this.

 

I don't think they would, since it doesn't have picture identification on it... I dunno about headshops, but if someone tried to come into my store and buy booze with a birth certificate I'd laugh at them and tell them to get lost, I can't see why it'd be any different at a headshop

 

This. Who's to say you didn't just walk in with someone else's BC?

Plus, headshops are run by individual people. Some may accept it and some won't. It's up to them.

 

Good point, you could show him you BC and a senior student id that looks like you but only if he asks you.

There are only 3 forms of valid id they can accept, in ny anyway. A drivers license or id card, a passport or a military id card. Other then that were not supposed to accept anything else

 

This one LHS cards everyone to see their stock room, which is behind a door. My gf uses her passport, so I dont see why you couldnt use your birth cirtificate. anything official to prove your 18.

 

I'm assuming that since you're 18, and you know you MUST have an ID, you've already sent the DMV your $ and are waiting on your ID. Otherwise, you wouldn't be wasting money on a piece.

Since you can probably buy rolling papers without an ID, I'd just use those till I got my ID and then go buy a piece, or purchase online

 

I guess all those in this thread saying that a birth certificate is acceptable as common identification are overlooking a rather blatant and obvious common denominator on ALL other forms of acceptable identification.

Any moron could walk around with a piece of paper claiming it's theirs, and usually birth certificates are only used to prove citizenship, or in conjunction with another form of ID to obtain a picture ID.

But if you can convince a head shop of it, more power to you. I know if I was running that LHS, I wouldn't risk it. Underage selling can shut a business down quick.

 

Like others have said OP, I doubt they'd accept anything but a photo ID and even then it would probably have to be a particular kind.

I know if I tried that around where I live they'd laugh at me. I would have to have a passport, drivers license or proof of age card.
