Hi! Me and my buddy (room mate) have some seeds in two 2-liter bottles. I wanted to wait until this coming month to get REAL soil, but he kept going on how we needed to get them started. Pretty much whining, so I gave in, even though I knew better. So we ended up digging up some backyard dirt. It was about 3-4 inches down in the earth before we would bag it, so hopefully it isn't so shitty. It's a real dark color. Anyway, the first seeds didn't sprout at all, so I figured either they were shit seeds or there were some insects that got to it. I nuked the soil in the microwave to kill everything, and mixed it with perlite and vermiculite. I did it 1 part dirt, 1 part perlite, and 1 part vermiculite. I germinated my seeds in paper towels so we didn't have to wait to find out that they didn't pop. They germinated and we put the seeds in. However, this soil mixture is REALLY compact, and sandy-like. When I was mixing it all together, you couldn't even see the "dirt" anymore, but I measured each part exactly. Perhaps I used too much vermiculite? When I watered, there is ZERO drainage. This is only temporary, and will be buying REAL soil in another couple days. Is it possible that the grow medium is too thick for the seed/sprout to grow?
very possible if the drainage is as poor as you describe.. could be holding too much water in there. Seeds don't like to be waterlogged at all. i'd skip the backyard soil and use just the perlite/vermiculite to germinate in if that's all you have till you get some proper soil. but personally i'd just wait those extra few days until you have everything that you need in hand. good luck dude..
Sounds like its waterlogged to hell and im willing to bet my damn left nut that a sprout isnt going to pop up lol

No. Its the same quality as the dirt in your yard just with some added woodchips honestlyOh but wait!! You usually get something free when you buy those soils, a surprise present of one of many different harmful bugs that inhabit those soils
