Why is Cuba still being choked ?

  1. The US initiated embargo on Cuba has been attempting to choke the country for the last 50 years with little success. Cuba has survived and while its people have suffered greatly from the embargo it has not had the effect it was intended to -> to force the country to submit to the US government.

Some examples of the effects of the embargo on Cuba and its people from Salim Lamrani's book "The Economic War Against Cuba"

So i ask in the year 2013 with the Cold War a distant memory and Fidel Castro retired is there any justification for the embargoes against Cuba and its people ?

  2.
I thought Obama talked about opening relations back up with them? However you still have too many old crows in the coop on congress in the house everything. People that have been there since the cold war I think that's a little of it. But then again look at what is about to go down in Syria. We're about to arm the rebels while Russia throws more weapons behind the regime, so there's still some cold war rivalry going on there.

  3.
Obama says a lot of things but as we have seen since he was first elected most of it is hot air.
The UN has passed numerous resolutions calling for the embargo to be lifted but as per usual these have fallen on deaf ears.

The current disagreement between the US and Russia is just posturing and puffing out of chests imo. The US have nothing to fear from the Russians these days who are a shambles of a country grasping at air in an attempt to hang on to their relevance on the world stage.

  4.
Oh yeah trust me used to be a fan of the man but eh he's really soured me this 2nd term, but that's a whole nother debate on it's own. And while I agree with we have nothing to worry about from Russia, I just think it's still posturing. Like Bush's Axis of Evil thing, if you're friends with Russia you're as bad as Russia, at least if you don't have any resources we need.

  5. Everyone knows it's time to end the embargo. It's unfortunate that the Cuba Lobby controls US policy in this matter. Basically a small though powerful and wealthy group of anti-Castro Cuban-Americans make sure the sanctions against Cuba stay in place. Politicians don't want to piss off the Lobby because they're based primarily out of Florida which is a major swing state. There's no purpose served by keeping this 50+ year old embargo in place beyond keeping the Cuba Lobby happy.

It's a joke that Cuba is still listed as a state sponsor of terrorism even though there is "no indication that the Cuban government provided weapons or paramilitary training to terrorist groups."

It's funny because by that standard, the US should list the US as a state sponsor of terrorism for providing weapons & training to terrorists. Of course we've been doing that for a long time all across the globe, but openly sponsoring terrorism is the cornerstone of US strategy in Syria.

  6. There is never justification for embargoes of this kind. It's essentially terrorism as embargoes and sanctions harm normal citizens. That's why free trade is the ultimate in fostering friendship. Trade literally gives health and life to people, just as embargoes bring pain and suffering. Free trade is perhaps the most powerful incentive that exists to remain friends with any given nation. It's the key to peace, and it requires nothing from government except to get out of the way.

  7. I think we have an embargo on Cuba because they are a communist country right?  But yet China is communist too but we have no problems with buying all kinds of goods from them.  I agree that maybe we should open up the embargo on them.  It seems like only a couple of countries keep on crying around about them and we the US are one of them.

As far as arming those rebels in Seria goes, I think that a lot of them are terrorists so I don't think we should arm them.  Some are linked to AL-Quaeda.  I really think we should side with Russia on this one since a lot of the Rebels are terrorists and that is why Russia does not want us to arm them.  Beyond that, the money that would be used I think could be better used here instead to help out our own people since we have our own issues with people being unemployed.

  8. I just wanna go for the Cubano Sandwiches, Cuban Coffee. If you have not had either hit yourself in the head and go try them now. Plus a open Cuba will probably have Casinos once again and be a huge tourist spot again.

  9. I guess some of the tobacco users might like some of those Cuban Cigars.  I know that they are available in Canada, but not here in the US due to this embargo.  I don't care for tobacco any more, but I guess that could be a benefit for cigar users here.

  10.
I work more outside the US then in it and its easy to bring Cubans back. You simply have to ....ready....remove the wrapper lol. I mail the wrappers home and bring them back without. I never been to Cuba but anywhere outside the US Cubans are very easily bought...alot of counter fits but you can easily find non counter fits.

Like wine though many domestic brands now rival the best French Vinyards and if cigar wise many non cubans do it better today. Just no glam to smoking one.

I have visited Cuba twice myself and apart from the delights you mention above the Cuban women are also a delight to behold. :yummy:

Could you not just enter Cuba from another country ? I came across Americans when i was there and this is what they had done.

LOL, yeah, that is true.  I have head myself that it is quite easy to smuggle Cuban Cigars to the US.  I have never done it myself, but I do know people that have done it from Canada.  There are fakes out there so you do have to watch out.  I don't know if any of these people pulled the wrappers off or not, but, that is kind of funny though.  Thats actually a pretty good way to do it fairly cheaply and yet safely since they probably can't prove that the cigar is Cuban.

I don't see why Jay-Z and Beyonce are free to go to Cuba but not myself or most Americans. The collective punishment of the Cuban people causes a lot of harm to their lives but brings no benefits for anyone beyond some members of the US political class. If they want the regime to fall, ending the embargo would go a long way to that end.

It's quite hard for Americans to get permission to go to Cuba and even if you go through another country, it's of course going to cost you more, then there's the issue of spending US money in Cuba. Wikitravel has a very good explanation of the rules for US travel to Cuba.

I really love to travel and see the world. It would be nice to be able to visit Cuba one day without having to find costly ways to get around the embargo.

  14. I honestly think its because Cuba made America look stupid. When America sent ships to Cuba they had their army waiting at the coast. Someone leaked the plan to invade Cuba and Cuba ended up embarrassing America infront of the world.

  15.

From what I gather yes you can. Say fly to Jamaica then catch a flight out of there to Cuba.  I think if you file with the Dept of State you can get approval to go there for historical site seeing purposes or some BS.

Yeah, you're not "supposed" to, but you can go to Cuba thru Mexico and the Cubans usually will not stamp your passport. This is something I want to try myself.

  17. Wait, so it's the US saying Americans can't go to Cuba, and not Cuba saying Americans can't come in?

  18.
    Yip.

  19. Wow that's fucked up. Are there any other countries that the US prevent its citizens from travelling to?

I think Cuba is the only one with an outright ban.

That said i would imagine if you came back to the US with a stamp from Iran on your passport you would have more than a few questions to answer. :)
