CBS: Why is Congress a millionaires club? - Political Hotsheet - CBS News

Anybody else realize how completely unacceptable this is? This is basically proof that not only is our country represented by people who in no way represent our country, but that the incentive is to make money off of it (at least partially but I would guess mainly) and that the way things are currently run, they have a monopoly on politics and you have to be rich to get in.

This is complete bullshit, I don't know why people haven't realized before how big of an issue this is. It seems based on what I've been reading lately though, that most people really are beggining to see it all for what it really is.

edit - just bumping this thread for the hell of it: http://forum.grasscity.com/politics/794543-cointelpro-techniques-dilution-misdirection-control-internet-forum-6.html

  2. Who cares how much they make? That's what happens when you go to ivy school. What would limiting there pay to 60,000 a year do? Fix american politics?

  3. And that's the problem.

You think these people spend all their time and money just so they can help the people they represent?

The incentive is money always has been, or has it?

Then again isn't that pretty obvious.

    I'm gonna go away now:hippie:

 Its a job..... cutting their pay in half wont fix 1 single problem that they have created. who fucking cares if they make 120,000 or 60,000 or even 200,000. We pay lebron james 30 million dollars a year to put a ball through a steel hoop. Thats it, Ball inside a steal hoop. Acting like the congress`s pay is root of the problem is bit silly. Would lowering their pay to min wage(or whatever figure you select) make them want to represent their people more ? lol...

  5. no. no. no. and no.

Everyone cares how much they make because how can they relate and represent people they know nothing about and share no common interests with (other then making money, or they at least spread that as a positive thing). There is no reason anybody needs millions of dollars, it's greedy and a truthfully immoral thing to be a millionaire, and you don't mind at all that more the 50% of congress and house is run by them? Especially when they truthfully represent <1% of the population? There should maybe be 1 or 2 in there at most. Most of those people got into Ivy School because they were rich, not the other way around. It also has nothing to do with how much they make in congress, but how much they make outside of congress.

Seriously, if you don't understand that, then you're probably no better then they are. It's all about having more then everyone else at the expense of others, right? Yea, we want people in office like that. People who single handedly cause the starvation and poverty of the world so that they can control and have anything they want. Definitely the right people to run this country. And no obvious signs that it isn't working out for us, none at all. Economy is fine. Wars are good.

  6. I don't think he ever mentioned pay.

    :poke:

  7. Kind of main point of thread . Am i missing something? What exactly is the problem then?

" see thats exactly what the problem is"

Somehow you and me took something different from that. Enlighten me .

  8. Sorry i guess im not into socialism and making everyone earn the same amount of money to keep society happy.

  9. um, a brain? apparently you think john kerrys salary is $10,000,000/yr, or you didn't read the article at all and are trying to discredit my post. we're done here, aight

  10. So because John kerry`s wife is rich, he shouldnt be allowed to be a member of congress? Whats your fucking point, better yet, whats your solution or are you just jealous that people make more money then you?

  11. Did you read the article quoted in OP?

Nobody is complaining about their pay directly, but the wealth of those elected, the powers they represent and the privileges they are offered when in office.

Although their pay should be cut too. :D

  12. OH I see. its the " they make more money then me so i hate them thing"

cool. So rich people shouldnt be allowed to be in congress. Ok awesome! I forgot for a moment how fringe grasscity politics remains.

  13. Yep that's it, you're right so go away and don't come back to this thread.

  14. http://forum.grasscity.com/politics...-know-score-%91abnormal%92-stock-profits.html

"Sir, there are two passions which have a powerful influence in the affairs of men. These are ambition and avarice; the love of power and the love of money. Separately, each of these has great force in prompting men to action; but when united in view of the same object, they have in many minds the most violent effects. Place before the eyes of such men a post of honor, that shall at the same time be a place of profit, and they will move heaven and earth to obtain it. The vast number of such places it is that renders the British government so tempestuous. The struggles for them are the true source of all those factions which are perpetually dividing the nation, distracting its councils, hurrying it sometimes into fruitless and mischievous wars, and often compelling a submission to dishonorable terms of peace." - Ben Franklin, Constitutional Convention, 1787

  15. Apparently, Rich people arent qualified to be members of congress. Poor people , from lower income familes, are MUCH better suited to run our country! I like how classy you remained through out, a shining example of good behavior.

    You
"JOHN KERRYS TO RICH I DONT LIKE HIM IN CONGRESS WAAA"

    Me

" whats wrong with being rich and a member of congress"

    you

" YOU HAVE NO BRAIN YOU DONT UNDERSTAND HES RICH MY POINT EXACTLY"

    Me
    "......"

    you

  16. Does anybody esle see how obviously I'm being trolled right now? All you have to do is read, it is explained in a way that anybody could understand, and if you dont... then explain yourself better then "herp derp rich people aren't bad I don't read things!" Maybe if you can provide a solid reason why it is not a bad thing to have millionaires making up the majority of congress, when we are supposed to have equal representation, maybe if you can tell me how all the points made are invalid, then I will believe you. So go ahead, explain yourself. Take your time, make it longer then two sentences. I want to see a coherant, grammatically correct paragraph at least, it wouldn't do your point justice if you shorted yourself on the explination. Seriously, if you're so smart, explain why, I'm honestly interested.

  17. So on that note, I will go into more detail about who should make up congress. First of all, there should be no place for million dollar campain runs in congress. It shouldn't cost more then a few thousand to run for office. This isn't the place for an advertising war, we don't need to be sold our politicians.

I would never say it should be required to have an even demographic in congress, but preferably it should represent this countries population, and thus have blacks and mexicans who represent their demographics, at least a few people from poorer classes and definitely middle class too. Money should not be required to get in, but debating skills, experience, ethics, morals, reputation etc should be the standard. Not who can sell their personality.

If we want a country run for the people, by the people, we need to elect people into office who truly represent us. And a shit ton of millionaires is the very opposite of that in every way.

  18. Hey novice grower, if you disagree, rather than attempting to make people feel bad for THEIR opinions, just state yours nicely, rather than repeating the same thing over again and being condescending, and go make a thread about YOUR opinion, obviously you guys have different opinions... get over it. Just as they wont change yours, you wont change theirs

  19. Nobody said that.

I agree with you that income shouldn't have anything to do with their eligibility, but you shouldn't automatically pass it off as a coincidence. There's obviously a reason that they are all millionaires, and that's what the OP is asking.

Do you have an answer, or are you just going to vent your psychological issues on us?

  20. My question is how do you regulate this? You guys all act as libertarians (lol) but then want laws or rules regulating how much money one can have as a member of congress. Further more, you want to regulate how much money a congressman can spend on his pursuit of his job. Its the same old tune of hate the rich. Sorry, i don't think we need anymore regulations and laws.
