Why has the old rock died?

Discussion in 'Music genres, Bands and Artists' started by chzburgerWalrus, Oct 3, 2012.

  1. My friends always talk shit to me about liking 'old shit' for music. How can I like stuff that's never going to change, bands that have faded away for the most part & aren't putting out much new stuff. I love the rock music that is now called 'classic rock': The Allman Brothers Band, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Jimi, Cream, CCR, Skynyrd, CSNY, etc...rock music that, in large part, was heavily infused with blues sounds, long instrumentals, and psychedelic elements

But almost all the 'new' rock that they present to me is this brief, repetitive, radio-friendly, unimaginative, loud/distorted instead of legitimate quality...just bland fucking stuff. There's been a couple bands that came close to the type of sound I love from those older bands, the Black Crowes being one of the better groups, but again their stuff is repetitive and all radio-friendly. Everyone loves the Black Keys it seems like, and they have a couple ok songs but again, I'm just not impressed overall.

I didn't make this thread to hate on the new music, even though I have a low opinion of it. No, this thread is a request.

I ask you blades: please show me some good NEW rock music. Prove to me, please, that real rock has not died and gone away. Give me the best stuff you know of, because I want to give it a try.

This thread is made in hope, come through for rock my fellow blades!! :metal:

  2. Well I'm not too sure about this, but the White Stripes sound pretty amazing to me.

  3. i was abit annoyed today when i found a new record store that has thousands of oldskool records, mainly rock etc but the guy looked confused when i asked him about 60's surf music. you just cant find that sorta sound anywhere these days.

If you like this is kind of stuff, just search Josh Homme(He's in every band I listed). You'll be golden:smoke::metal:

  5. Sure all that music is good but there's way more music being created now than ever before.

If you cant find good music then you aren't looking hard enough. And the reason there are less bands like that now is because the style has been over done so much that its gotten old.

Here's some recent stuff you might like

  8. Check out the sheepdogs if you haven't. Songs like I don't know and southern dreaming are two of the more popular ones. The guys are amazing.

  9. A lot of the older guys aren't making new music. But a lot of the new guys are making old music, like black keys, white stripes, radiohead, etc.
Plus a lot of the old good groups broke up or died. The ones who are still together KNOW that there's an audience for the music they've already made and still sellout shows (where they make their money, since pirating has cut heavily into profits), so there's no real incentive to experiment with much newness. If you have a formula and it works, cash in. A lot of these guys lost their passion years ago and just want to make enough to live comfortably. Plus, most new music sucks and is remixed and it makes it difficult to get newer stuff past these CEOs who've made careers out of butchering music and follow the, "one size fits all" mentality.

    :confused_2:

    Makes sense to me

Paul McCartney still makes music, but his old Beatles tunes prove time and again tobe in higher demand than his newer stuff.

thanks for all the links blades, gonna start listening right now

I'll report back in a few songs :smoking:

I've heard stuff from Black Keys, Mogwai, Queens of the Stone Age & White Stripes before, and they're not bad just nothing that really hold my attention.

Dazey, good call on Dead Meadow. I've heard of them before but never got around to listening. Going through a few of their songs on Youtube right now +rep

definitely grooving to Dead Meadow right now, Arctic Monkey song is solid too.

  15. There are still plenty of bands (albeit, largely outside the mainstream) making legit music. In addition to what others have posted:

  17. its called stoner rock. there a shit load of it on the west coast right now

  18. Best believe I've been grooving to the new Neil Young shit. Dude is one of a kind, and still going strong

Kasabian are right there with the Black Crowes as the best of the the new rock groups I've heard. Clubfoot & Underdog are high end songs.

you blades are keeping me grooving, good shit :smoking:

  19. Rock is the best music ever. There's nothing like it. I have said it before and I'll say it again: I will listen to Zeppelin and Floyd and The Beatles and Iron Maiden forever, until the day I die.

But there are bands in the last 10-20 years keeping it alive: Foo Fighters, Black Keys, White Stripes, etc. Just not as prevalent.

  20. Old rock has died because its like a good joke if its overused it will get old and annoying. I personally love old rock new rock everything but thats why I think a lot of people don't like older things
