This is very disturbing, especially so because this baby was perfectly fine 1 hour ago. Is this happening only because it stretched too much and reached a point where it can't carry itself? Can this be an issue related to soil-water pH? Or a result of over/underwatering?
What's your setup? Looks to be stretched way too much, maybe underwatered because of those top leaves pointing "up", to the left in that picture, hard to tell really though. Add water to get the stem to straighten a little then put a stick in the ground next to it and tie it to the stem to hold the plant up. Get your lights closer, maybe add a little soil around the stem if you can. Good luck.
wow that was a quick reply. Thanks for the input mate. I water them a couple of times a day with 3-4 drops of water from a straw simply because I'm rather scared of overwatering andd/or rotting them. Any idea what amount of water a couple of days old plants would need daily? edit: and yea your eyes are right. All of my plants have leaves (not cotyledons) pointing kinda upwards.
As for daily waterings, just use a spray bottle and spray lightly, give full waterings every 2-3 days by watering just until water begins to come out of the bottom(this is because once the soil has absorbed all that it can the rest of the water will simply pass through) As a result of this it is hard to overwater if you have good drainage because excess water will simply drain out. DO NOT do this everyday though, only spray with a spray bottle everyday and just lightly. EDIT: To check to see if the plants need watering stick your finger about 2 inches deep into the soil. If dry then water. If not then they don't need to be watered.
That baby died. I believe it was either, 1.the lack of light (I wasn't even planning to grow, did just put some crappy bagseeds into wet paper towels without the hope of them showing up. They germ'd inside 24 hours, all 5 of them, 24h after transplant, they sprouted. I was like..wtf? So I wasn't prepared and had only like 1*40W incandecent (yea you heard me for 5 (yea you heard me, again ) babies, and it was warm white!!! it's like wrong over and over again My guess is they kept trying to reach the light before strengthening their stem and fell over. 2.or it was because the crazy neutral pH (actually even alkaline!) water I gave them, not sure tho, it was looking all good until one moment, bam. The thing that I couldn't understand is, after they bent over, the stem started getting thinner at the bend and eventually reached a point when it's reaaally reaaally THIN. and.. that whole "thinning" thing ran down on the stem about 1 inches far. Maybe underwatering but I dunno, a plant this tiny should be able to survive with the water I gave. So, I just wanted to share, if you guys have any diagnosis, I'd appreciate it, if not, thanks anyways. Peace
definately a lack of light classic signs of stretching to reach a unavaialble light source.either your lights are way to high or not enough of them!!!
Incandescents have a band of light that stimulates growth in the stem. You could have had 500 regular incandescents and it will only stretch it till it can't support itself. If they didn't die, I would have recommended changing to a fluorescent(very cheap) and to bury most of its stem in dirt. Sorry though, mate.
