Why do we hate 'Work' so much?

Discussion in 'General' started by Jane_Bellamont, May 30, 2016.

  1. Why is it that some people can bring themselves to spend hours on activities like playing video games, football, poker, etc. or spending half a day sitting in front of a slot machine and pulling a lever at the Casino, looking at numbers .. or building model aircraft, painting photorealistic landscapes, brewing alcohol, growing weed, restoring old cars, etc.

And yet, the minute they realize they need to get up the next day in the morning to go to a place where you perform similarly repetitive activities... they become overwhelmed by a feeling of dread.

    Why?

  2. The activities you've listed are done for pleasure whereas people need to go to work to make a living.

As for the slot machines, poker etc... gambling is addictive.

  3. I feel most people can't handle work. I've seen plenty and plenty of people who can't hang with busy work. Sucks for them, hope they win the lottery.

  4. A lot of what you mentioned could be considered work and you could get paid for it. Restoring cars definitely, painting, growing weed, being a professional poker player, being a professional football player... The way I see it is that the more you like your co-workers, and the more fun you can have at your job, the more you'll look forward to going to work.

  5. I was fortunate to have a job that i liked. I looked forward to going to work. It was great. It has been the best job i've ever had. I miss it, but its nice to have insurance and for the government to give me money back then for me not to have insurance and owe the government money. Nobody likes doing what they dont want to do, and within they're job ther could alot of bs that they just dont want to put up with and shouldnt have to. because not every one pulls there own weight.

  6. People hate work because they are working for somebody else making them money and doing their work. If they are self employed and hate work, then it's because they chose something to make enough money not because they love what they do.

  7. Desire vs necessity.

Most people don't like doing things that they don't have a choice in the matter.

So if you can't find a job doing something you enjoy, you get to look forward to spending most of your waking hours making someone else money while they (most likely) drastically underpay you. Not exactly the most desirable of circumstances.

But when there's bills to pay, you don't get the liberty of choosing. And that's pretty shitty if you end up doing something you hate with a passion.

This is from an American perspective, will vary country to country where there is more or less safety nets

  8. It's funny the way the human brain works. Shouldn't the things that are more essential to survival .. give us more pleasure?

Do lions enjoy hunting for food?

Or could it have something to do with the unnaturality of modern human civilization? Surely, we didn't evolve to spend every day flipping burgers or mopping floors.. or sitting inside an office with fluorescent lights.

  9. I absolutely belive flipping burgers is a waste of our potential as a species.

We need to implement a universal basic income (just enough to meet basic necessities like food, water and shelter, not enough to live a life of luxury) so that we can focus on creative endeavors and massively reduce stress.

  10. that might be what it is. I was watching a bird the other day and said to myself. he does he has to do to survive. Humans dont need modern amenities to live, there nice/ convenient. its 2016 and there are still people living like they did 1000 years ago, but malaria kills em and most dont make it past 30. Think we need to find a balance some how.

  11. More than anything, the UBI could take advantage of basic flaws in human nature. If people were to start associating work with reward (as in, extra money .. as opposed to survival money) then the motivations would change completely.

I also think that a large portion of the human population still has hunter-gatherer brains.

In other words, they are more accustomed to the unpredictability and the rush of surviving in the wilderness .. as opposed to the predictability of the clock-work society that we live in.

These people would probably be more suited to the entrepreneurial lifestyle. A lot of these people are also diagnosed with ADHD.

  12. Getting up early sucks!

  13. Look up the Hunter vs. Farmer ADHD hypothesis. Have you ever wondered why ADHD is becoming increasingly diagnosed in the 21st century?

Is it because kids are being allowed to play too many video games?

Or .. could it have something to do with the fact that we are moving further and further away from our roots, from the unpredictability of the wilderness .. into a perfectly clock-work society?

Is ADHD a Disease of Civilization?

  14. But then your an entitled millenial who doesn't know the value of hard work

No I'd just like to actually make money doing things I want to do, you know fulfillment and all that, and guess what, so do most people. Fancy that, people would prefer doing what they want to do.

    Bah humbug

And not to mention a UBI was solve so many problems we have as a society

  17. Is that a joke? Most artists are artists because they love to create art, not because of monetary purposes. A good job for a teenage is something like a job in fast food or a convenience store, etc.

  18. I hate my work because I do the same mindless repetitive things. I used to do stuff that I enjoyed a lot more, but I don't really work with those kinds of clients anymore or have any connections. I get paid the same for what I do now, but it's not nearly as enjoyable or challenging as things used to be

  19. Thanks pals. Yeah, I'd assume the same.

  20. I have the feeling that corporations and governments will eventually introduce a Motivation drug, something that you take in the morning, a replacement for your morning coffee.. to force you to feel excited about going to work.
