Why do so many people have problems with pit bulls?

Discussion in 'Pets' started by TheLeftHand, Mar 8, 2013.

  1. i believe it is because they are synonymous with ghetto people, "thugs", home defense, fighting and bred killers/attackers. It's a shame they get such a bad rep from all the people who keep them as intimidation tools.

I personally feel they are trash dogs. but thats just my opinion that i am free to voice via the internet/festering shithole. All the pits ive come across were not very friendly.

plus stories like this around my area keep them in a negative light

Pet Pit Bull Kills Pregnant Woman in Pacifica California Home - ABC News

  2. So how exactly do you suppose people go about actually fixing this pitbull problem. denying it exists and blaming it on the media blowing it out of control isn't a solution either so save your breath if your gonna spew that tired rhetoric.

Also the fact that you cant criticize or speak negatively about "ghetto thug shitheads" without being deemed racist will get in the way of addressing the actual problem.

So where do you strike this problem? Convince people it doesn't exist like your already trying to do? Putting an end to the shithead thug culture is probably the best way but that gets you deemed a racist and good lord nobody wants to be deemed a racist nowadays.

  3. ^ Yeah but most "thugs" don't even have american pit bull terriers. Instead, they have bully mutts. I'm sure you have seen the hype on "blue pits" and ones with "big heads" Or those poor things that are so low to the ground and have bowed legs. Yeah those aren't american pit bull terriers, those are mutts. There is no blue gene in the American Pit Bull terrier. It is a dilute gene from another breed.
What really needs to happen is, stopping the spread of ignorance towards any dog breeds. These dogs that cause most of the problems are generic bully mutts. Yeah somewhere down the line it has a bit of apbt in it but, that is not the primary breed and can not be considered a "pit bull"/.

As for them being trash dogs, I bet if you feel that way you never saw a REAL PAPERED American Pit Bull Terrier. These dogs were the nanny dog, they were all over movies and media but in positive light a long time ago.

Like I stated earlier I was super biased towards the generalized term "pit bulls" I got attacked with my lady and my small dog. It was bad and could of been a lot worse if it happened to someone else.

I now own TWO female american pit bull terriers and they live happily with two ten lbs dogs. I never leave them alone because I understand that dog aggression is a common trait in this breed. Do I think they will ever hurt the other dogs... No but, it's better to be a responsible dog owner and be safe rather than sorry.

Please post some pic of what you consider "pit bulls" to be... I bet your idea of a american pit bull terrier is completely false due to the type of dogs most people call "pits".

My dogs aren't scary looking. Actually, in fact most people run up to us when we are out and ask what breed they are. They are generally in SHOCK when I say american pit bull terrier. That shows you that most people's perception on this breed is wrong. Bullys are not american pit bull terriers (aka pit bull or whatever you call it).
I have two pure breed American Pit Bull Terriers and the papers to prove it. You can trace their lines back to the early 1900's

    U.S. Dog Bite Statistics - DogsBite.org

    From wiki
Pitbulls are a naturally aggressive species of dog, regardless of how the owner treats them, sorry to rain on your parade, pitlovers.

Protip: Just because YOUR pitbull is nice, doesn't mean all or most pitbulls are. They're vicious dogs that require extensive training to lower those aggressive traits. I would never own a pitbull, especially if I had kids.

  5. Idk if this was directed at me but....

What pit bull problem? The ignorance towards them? The nonsense bsl that try and get passed?
The only way to stop this bull shit is to educate people on the FACT'S of the American Pit Bull Terrier breed. People need to understand that the foot tall, big headed blue dog running down the street terrorizing the neighborhood is NOT a "pit bull" it is a mutt. Do you call a shelter mutt a lab cause it kind of looks like there might be lab in it? No you call it a mixed breed or mutt. Out of almost all the media reports, I find very little that are actually about American Pit Bull Terriers but they still say "pit bull attacks blah blah".
The problem is never gonna end to people stop breeding these horrible genetics. I think the first step is to place tougher restrictions on breeding.
If you don't have adba papers on your dog then it's a mutt and it should not be bred and should be fixed. The only dogs that should be bred are dogs that earned it through titles of any kind and are WORTHY of being bred.
Look at websites like craigslist and type in pit bull. Take some time to look through the pages of bs. It's sad.... people need to stop breeding mutts. These dogs have no place to go and end up roaming the streets, taking up room in shelters or pts.

So I think the first step is to place tough restrictions and fines on breeding and mandatory spay/ neuter if the dog is not papered by a reputable registry.

I have a pit bull terrier, with papers, he is 78 lbs and he isnt a mutt.

    HEIGHT AND WEIGHT
The American Pit Bull Terrier must be both powerful and agile; overall balance and the correct proportion of weight to height, therefore, is far more important than the dog’s actual weight and/or height.

Desirable weight for a mature male in good condition is between 35 and 60 pounds. Desirable weight for a mature female in good condition is between 30 and 50 pounds.

As a general and approximate guideline only, the desirable height range for mature males is from 18 to 21 inches at the withers; for mature females it is from 17 to 20 inches at the withers.

It is important to note that dogs over or under these weight and height ranges are not to be penalized unless they are disproportionately massive or rangy.

as you see above for show these are the guidlines, many good breeders have good dogs that may be a little bigger then others, some call them bullies I believe either way they are great dogs.

  8. Pit bull, owner find missing woman in Piscataway
    Published: March 1, 2013 11:21 PM

A young hairstylist and a pit bull are being credited with saving a life in Piscataway.
Carmen Mitchell, 89, who suffers from dementia, was missing for several hours Thursday evening after wandering away from her home. Her son, Luke Stapleton, called police after searching her home and the immediate neighborhood.
Middlesex police brought in canine units and launched a helicopter to search.
Pit bull saves owner from potential rapist
Buford, GA - A woman walking her dog was abducted by a knife-wielding man in mid-December. A sketch has just been released of the person responsible for the kidnapping and attempted rape that occurred on December 13.

The attack was frightening and disturbing as it was, but it could have been much worse if not for the intervention of the woman's other dog, a Pit Bull.

The man had attacked the woman while she was walking her Beagle on a road near her home. The man forced the woman, at knife-point, back to her home.

There, he forced her into a bedroom, confined her to a chair, cut her hair, and attempted to rip off her shirt. This is where the dog hero enters the picture.

The woman's other dog, a Pit Bull named Purple, rushed in as the man was attempting to rape her. Purple was able to bite the assailant, providing the victim just enough time to escape from her attacker, and her home.

The woman was able to call the police from her neighbor's home. Unfortunately, by the time the police arrived, the man had escaped.

Police are activity looking for the woman's attacker. He is described as a white man, approximately 25 years of age, slim build, brown, military style hair - the man is about 5'9" tall.

Kudos to Purple - a fiercely loyal dog that effectively protected her owner from an extremely violent man.

Boomer to the rescue - heroic pit bull saves life of woman

Boomer, an 18 month old pit bull, was credited with saving a Bullhead City woman on Tuesday. Boomer intervened as the woman was being attacked by two dogs running at large.

A 28-year-old Bullhead City woman was airlifted to a Las Vegas hospital after being attacked by two Pit bulls, police said Tuesday.
But the actions of a third Pit bull, Animal Control Bureau manager Leah Rojas said, kept the attack from getting worse.

At about 11:40 a.m., police spokeswoman Emily Montague said, the woman was walking in her neighborhood on White Sands Drive when two pit bull dogs running at large attacked her.

A third dog, "Boomer," dug his way under a fence to get out of his yard to help the woman, Montague said.
Boomer took on the other dogs and "probably saved this woman's life," Rojas said.
A neighbor heard the victim screaming and called 911, Montague said. Police officers were able to contain the two dogs to a nearby vacant lot until animal control officers took custody of them.
Paramedics transported the victim to Western Arizona Regional Medical Center. She was later airlifted to Sunrise Hospital in stable condition.

Boomer suffered minor injuries during the incident. The owner of the two dogs, 20-year-old Stephanie Penaloza, was cited and released for having vicious dogs and allowing her dogs to run at large with liability. She also was cited for a license violation. Her dogs are being held at the Bullhead City Animal Control Shelter on a 10-day quarantine.

Update: See photos of Boomer getting a well-deserved reward from a reader and fellow DogHeirs member who was moved by Boomer's heroicism: Kim's Photo Album: Boomer the Hero Pitbull

Kim wrote, "Boomer and his family are the nicest people, we brought some fresh from the butcher bones for boomer. He was sitting in the front of the SUV when we arrived, and after looking around the yard for a short time, I suddenly see Boomer sitting in the front seat of the SUV. I called to him asking "Are you Boomer, and he got all excited and jumped from the front seat to the rear of the SUV and out the back and over to us. The owner came out all smiles. She is very proud of Boomer and rightly so."

Chihuahua Mix Attacked By Coyote, Saved By Pit Bulls

A Littleton neighborhood is on edge after a coyote attacked and nearly killed a woman's dog Saturday morning.
These attacks are becoming more and more common.

According to the Colorado Division of Wildlife, in the wild where they are actively hunted and trapped, coyotes are generally elusive. Near cities or in areas where hunting and trapping is not allowed, coyotes may be aggressive. In urban settings, they can lose their fear of people and may even threaten domestic pets.

They've even attacked children recently. One young boy in Erie had to receive rabies shots for several weeks after an attack.

Coyotes are being spotted more in alleys and open spaces, attracted to things like open garbage and bird feeders.

Buster is a Chihuahua-Terrier mix. He was attacked Saturday morning.

"He woke me up at 6:30 to do his thing. I let him out and I came out with him," said Jodi Robinette of Littleton. "And about a minute later, he screamed like I've never heard an animal scream."

Robinette ran after Buster and the coyote behind her home at 949 West Peakview Circle near Angeline Little Greenway Park.

Buster, a Chihuahua Terrier mix seen here before his attack by a coyote. "And right when I came around this corner, the coyote had my dog in his mouth, shaking him as he was running,” she said. "And then, I see the coyote at the very middle of this field drop my dog."

Turns out the neighbor’s pit bulls were going after the coyote.

"Oh I, I (pause) can't talk. (Chokes up). It's really, you know, to see it happen," said Robinette.

Buster is now in the oxygen chamber at Columbine Animal Hospital and Emergency Clinic. He is being kept on antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medication and an IV.

Several neighbors witnessed the attack. Lucas Bouts said coyotes seem to be getting more dangerous.

"They've gone after pets before, usually behind fences. They've been becoming more aggressive," said Bouts. “And there are a lot of children in this neighborhood. The coyote’s just look at you like, ‘oh - we're used to people being around.’"

“I mean they need to be relocated. I don't want them destroyed or wish them harm, but it was just a tragedy for everyone," said Robinette.

As for the pit bulls - they scared off the coyote and then protected Buster under a bush.

"They were circling him and sitting by him. Making sure he was all right," said Robinette. "So it needs to be said that there’s some good (in pit bulls) and not all bad."

Back at the animal clinic, Buster's got a polka-dot bandage, a heated blanket and some pain medicine. He’s had a rough day.

He will need surgery Monday. He has a collapsed lung, chest injuries and many deep lacerations.

The Division of Wildlife suggests never allowing your pets to roam, especially at night.

The division also suggests you keep your pets in a fenced area, or a completely enclosed kennel at times when you're not able to keep an eye on your pet.

Here's the link for a bunch of hero APBT's or t least ones who look like the breed.

  9. No they're not.

Naturally they're friendly dogs even towards children. APT are working dogs originally, they need to be kept active with plenty of exercise and trained properly. Any breed of terrier can develop aggressive traits towards humans. To stop this they must be properly socialised and handled. If not, then yes they will most likely develop aggressive traits towards humans unfortunately. I know people who own APT's and staffordshire terriers, they have children who try and ride around on them like a horse. Never has there ever been so much as a growl or snap towards the child. They are all properly trained though, they know their place.

    It's pretty simple really..

bad owner = aggressive/dangerous dog, good owner = well behaved dog.

    CHARACTERISTICS
The essential characteristics of the American Pit Bull Terrier are strength, confidence, and zest for life. This breed is eager to please and brimming over with enthusiasm. APBTs make excellent family companions and have always been noted for their love of children. Because most APBTs exhibit some level of dog aggression and because of its powerful physique, the APBT requires an owner who will carefully socialize and obedience train the dog. The breed’s natural agility makes it one of the most capable canine climbers so good fencing is a must for this breed. The APBT is not the best choice for a guard dog since they are extremely friendly, even with strangers. Aggressive behavior toward humans is uncharacteristic of the breed and highly undesirable. This breed does very well in performance events because of its high level of intelligence and its willingness to work.

he doesnt look mean does he..:D:p

  12. Yeah exactly, it's when that enthusiasm isn't channeled in the right way that they become potentially aggressive.

    Great dogs:D

  13. Papers can be hung plain and simple...... It happens all the time. Though I am NOT saying yours are. I love this breed and am an activist for them. I am very into bloodlines. What bloods in your dog? Want to share the pedigree? I am not saying your dong is not a pure bred apbt because its 78 lbs... 78 lbs is definitely in the upper end of the scale... It is not uncommon to see those weights in hunting lines though. I have seen some beauties that are in the 70's... Catch dogs down south tend to be a little bigger than the acceptable adba weight. They are papered too. But, most of the time you can find another breed being mixed in somewhere in the line such as mastiff.

No one is saying you don't have a great dog and I certainly did not post false information in this thread. I'm not sure where your going with this... Nothing that I posted was meant to start a argument or flame war.... especially with a member who knows about this breed.
You seem to know a lot about this breed which sadly is not as common as I would like it to be. I would love to further discuss blood, the history and overall facts about apbt's with you.
My post was put out there as a response to someone else and so this thread has a bit of accurate info about these dogs in it. As I am sure you know, there is tons of ignorance surrounding our breed.

I know what the breed standards are and both my girls are active in the competition ring. They compete in weight pulling, dock jumping, lure coursing, bite work, conformation and hunting (non competitive)

By the way if thats your dog above nice pup:smoking::wave:

  14. Great way to put it. +rep
These dogs NEED to be worked. If not they have no way to take out their energy and enthusiasm to work then it will create all sorts of problems. That's the start for a bad situation.

If you can't work your apbt in one way or another then you shouldn't have one.
My two girls get worked for 2+ hours a day. Most of the time much much more. Everything from training (weight pulling, and the above mentioned) to mental stimulation. Mental stimulation is JUST as important for these dogs as physical stimulation.

The daily runs are their favorite though. They get to chase me through acres and acres while I rip my quad around. They probably get 10-20 miles of running!

  15. Game dog is still up and running, come chat it up over there some time. :smoking: Lot's of pics of my bitches.

  16. :p He's a beauty... How is it bred?

  17. I dont dis like pitbulls i dislike people who buy pit bulls because they wanna look tuff/ gangster and I feel thats 90% of the people that own them feel that way.

  18. ^ Most of those people don't even own real pit bulls... But, yes people who buy dogs of any kind as arm candy is stupid.
If you feel 90% of Apbt owners feel that way then you really know NOTHING about this breed. I am the furthest thing from a "gangster" and certainly do not try and be tough.
You should check out any kind of shows, whether weight pulling, conformation, agility whatever and you will see you are VERY VERY wrong about who own's this breed.
I promise you no one at those events are gangsters or own this dog to be tough.

I do agree that in bad areas people try and buy bull dog type dogs to be "hard". But, that is ignorant to think they make up for a majority of this breed. Check out some of the american pit bull terrier forums for a quick browse. You will learn fast that most of these owners are responsible owners, don't live in bad areas and don't parade their dogs around.

It is ignorance and bias like your post, that shows this breed is doomed.

  19. So maybe I'm quick to judge.. But lets be completely honest who isn't... And like I said before I do like pit bulls I think they are cool as shit. Along with boxers.. But I just cant help but think that way about the people who own them.
