In countries that are officially Muslim, or any other religion, everything else (education, science, way of life, rule of law) takes a backseat to the religion. That is why you'll usually see countries that are -officially- Muslim have lower HDI than countries that are secular by law, but have a Muslim majority. Religiosity inhibits social progress.
The simple answer is religion, in this specific case islam. Clerics in muslim countries have a stranglehold on their societies, much like the catholic church did in Europe during the dark ages. So any form of government in muslim majority countries need to tiptoe around religious traditions and edicts. Making it very hard to take the step into the 21st century in terms of human, social, technological and economic development. Also, it do not help that islam in its basic doctrines promote feudalism or that many muslim countries imported facets of the most vile dogmatic political mindsets from Europe following WW2 - communism and fascism. Like the Baath parties of Iraq and Syria. But even before that, muslim countries stuggled with imposing modernity. As Churchill himself noted in 1899: How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property – either as a child, a wife, or a concubine – must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the Queen: all know how to die but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world.
Nice video hoboleader, but I think it got one or two flaws in it. Regarding the number of atheists in the countries listed at the end. One need to keep in mind that these are official numbers, and many places around the world, the powers that be either make it very difficult for non-believers to be open upon their stance, quite simply deny that non-believers exist in their countries all-together or fudge the numbers so as it would seem there are very few non-believers. For example Iran. The video claim 0.6% atheists, which can't be correct. Or rather, the numbers are based upon nominal religious adherence on background of what traditional religious subgroup people belong to. Much in the same way as the Norwegian state church got some 80% of the population as members, they claim Norway is by and large a christian nation. What they leave out of course, is that the church a few years ago following a scandal of fudged member-lists committed another scandal - they copy-pasted the census data of all people living in Norway into their members list and then weeded out those registered in other (organized) faiths or organizations for non-believers. A less than perfect, not to speak of accurate, solution... Meanwhile, independent polls have shown a majority of Norwegians do not believe in a personal god and see the church more as a traditional master of ceremony than as a professor of truth or reason. Which is why the pews are near empty on any given sunday - but soon fill up during Xmas or some other big event where the church is the traditional gathering place. Much the same can be seen in Iran - mosque attendance is the lowest of any muslim country. One can assume that most Iranians give a rats ass about religion except as part of their traditional heritage - as a master of ceremony. I'd hazard to guess that 33 years of islamic theocracy have thouroughly vaccinated the Iranian people of strict religious adherence. Of course, how many are actually non-believers in Iran is hard to say. One need to remember that Iran practices the death penalty for non-belief, especially if that means being an apostate from islam. So much like Iran deny that they got any gays, and certainly no Iranian with their good mind to keep their head firmly in place on their shoulders, would ever admit to being a gay - so to would a non-believer in Iran never admit to actually thinking religion is bullshit. Among exiled Iranians however, non-belief is more or less on par with their host societies.
Because Muslim countries have colleges specifically for Islam. Whereas other, more sane, countries have colleges for actual skills and knowledge.
Because most Muslim countries are in the middle of the fucking desert and run by ruling families that siphon off all the wealth.
I am sick of hearing about Muslims. Thought I may have escaped it on here. O well.... Don't get me fucking started about Muslims and Islam. I live in dewsbury, West Yorkshire. England. That is the heart of Islamic terrorism in the uk. Are country suffers at the hands of Muslims. Have you heard of the Muslim grooming gangs that are spread throughout our country? They have been grooming young white girls for sex and force them into prostitution. They befriend vulnerable young girls as young as 10! And often in care. They shower then with gifts and compliments. They get taken for rides in their sick cars and given free lifts and a monile phone. They are groomed by constant text messages with compliments etc.They are given alcohol drugs cigs and taken to "parties". When they get to the parties they are forced to have sex with these MEN. And other men that are there. One girl was taken to a park where she was raped by at least 20 men over the corpse if hours. Another was so drunk she was throwing up. She was then raped whilst being sick. She was then carried across the road to another house to be raped again by other MEN. All Pakistani Muslim men

A few hundred years of inbreeding for the royal families of Europe, which ended a long time ago, vs. thousands of years for Muslim societies. It's been happening since long before Islam was even invented. Any society that does this long enough is going to suffer the consequences.
