White powdery residue in reservoir?

Discussion in 'Hydroponic Growing' started by Magicman2011, Mar 24, 2019.

  1. So I was setting up and doing a "dry run" to make sure I wouldn't have any issues. Straight tap water, came out at 7ph and I brought it down to around 6. Fired up the airstones and let it run over night. This is the result the next day. White powder at the bottom and the ph is now 8.

The only thing I can think of is my water is well water. Anyone have any thoughts on how to work with this water, or is it basically just fubar'd and I should buy some RO water? 20190324_163344.jpg

  2. Did u rinse your airstones? If their new they can have powder on them sometimes

  3. Could it be minerals from the tap water? Once dry leaves the residue

  4. I did clean the airstones, but I'll give that another shot.

If it were drying, I'd be inclined to say it was just minerals, but this stuff is forming at the bottom of the tank while it's still full.

  5. Most likely it's the salts that were in your nutrients

  6. It’s calcium from your well water. Your going to have a hard time with water that “hard”. You can prep soil a certain way to help counteract the high ph in your water or you can get a Reverse osmosis water filter. You can purchase distilled water but that is not very cost effective and a pain to constantly have to go out and buy it.
