I'm sure this topic has come up countless times but I just can't seem to find anything conclusive. I know that some metals are unsafe to smoke out of because they can release harmful gasses/fumes, but there seems to be quite a bit of a disagreement with regards to which ones are the safest to use.

I could go with a glass pipe, but in all honesty, I can't stand the look of those glass dicks. =/ I've been fiending for a Japanese kiseru though and after a fair of bit of hunting, I've just found a reliable retailer in the US who has the following pipes for sale:

Now I really want one of these but I'm worried that it may be harmful to my health. I would be lighting them with matches and since the bowl only holds one to three hits, I can't imagine that it would get too hot. For a large session, I would be using a glass bong or joints, but this would be my main tool for quick tokes. Nothing big, just one or two bowls of this about four to seven times per week.

I don't expect to keel over and die from using these, but I'm concerned about the impact it would have on my body over time. At some point within this year, I will be ordering a custom pipe similar to this:

That would be made from premium materials, but it won't be for a while since it'll cost a couple bills. So until then, I want to buy a kiseru but again, I'm not sure if the metal is safe. Any help would be greatly appreciated; owning a kiseru is kind of important to me so getting some clarification on the matter would mean a lot.

Also, if any of you are interested, here's a couple shots of some kickassJapanese kiserus: http://tobaccopipeartistory.blogspot.ca/2015/09/th... They look stunning but they cost a small fortune.

  2. Brass or steel, and of course don't use aluminum foil or pop cans if you have fear of Alzheimers.

  3. Thanks for the quick reply, bsarchives.

I've heard that peices made of brass area bit iffy because they may contain other metals within them, is this true?

  4. Most metal alloys will be iffy for this reason, I'd only recommend grade 2 American titanium if your dead set on using metal but glass will always taste better and be healthier.

  5. I don't have a definitive answer, but if I were you I would find out what metal/metals the pipe you want is made out of, then do some research on that metal. I'll bet you will get your answer within a few minutes after researching.
