I have always appreciated Jazz but in the last 6 months have become a full blown addict. I still appreciate the blues and rock and stuff but it just doesn't give me the high that jazz does for me now. Just wondering if anyone else in the city listen to jazz. I have been listening mostly to Wes Montgomery, Mingus, Monk, Django, Coltrane, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, The Duke, Lester Young, Ella Fitzgerald, Art Tatum, Clifford Brown, McCoy Tyner, Sun Ra, and Oscar Peterson. If anyone can relate lets talk some jazz.
I enjoy listening to it, but I have a hard time making a real emotional connection with it; and stuff like Albert Ayler and Ornette Coleman sometimes fail to keep my attention. I'll listen to it, and ten minutes later when the song is over I can't remember anything that I heard.
It is definitely different and not for everyone. You almost have to acquire an ear for it. I love it because there are no rules to jazz, you just express your feelings and emotions and the spirit of the times. And remember it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing. I suggest you give it a chance but be careful it can get very addicting.
King Crimson hell yeah. Mahavishnu Orchestra, I pretend to like Sun Ra, Stan Getz had some awesome releases. I like schizophrenic jazz too where the bass is walking like bum bum bum, they mostly ride that one cymbal thingeymabober, and the piano sounds like a manic episode of chromatic awesomeness. I wish I could play like Django Rheinhardt.
You definately gotta check out some soulive, pat metheny is also really good (I recommend the concert "the way up") weather report/jaco pastorius as well. jazz fusion is where its at
I've always liked the jazz they play in Starbucks. Can someone point me in the direction of that kind of jazz?
I'm a fan of the "west coast" jazz from the late '40s onward that included players like Chet Baker, Gerry Mulligan, Art Farmer.... A great showcase for it is the feature film I Want To Live!, which is regarded as the first Hollywood feature with an all-jazz soundtrack (songs & musical cues)...in fact, Mulligan & his quartet carry the first 5 minutes of the film...which includes a couple of guys out in the alley behind the club smokin' some "tea" That film shows up every now and then on TCM on cable & satellite, and IIRC, it's out on DVD.
I'm going through a phase in music where I'm into jazz. I've mostly been listening to 50's bossa nova, Jobim, Joao Gilberto, Sinatra's recordings in bossa nova are great. The Gran Turismo 5 soundtrack also has some incredible modern jazz and lounge that is just out of this world. Earlier this year I went to a Jazz Fest where Christian Scott played with Poncho Sánchez in the main act(don't know how many of you have heard of him), great player, great guy. The festival was dedicated to Abraham Laboriel, who also played an incredible gig that night. That night was incredible, the skies were clear and the moon shone brightly over the stage. The music, ridiculously insane. I got to meet both Sánchez and Scott in the afterparty. While Sánchez was a bit timid towards me and my cousin, Scott was fascinated with us. We had some beers with them and Christian even let us play around with his trumpet (I couldn't blow shit out of it, had never tried a brass instrument before). It was his birthday and he was celebrating it far away from his native New Orleans, he exchanged numbers with us and signed our tickets. We still occasionally hear from him. You can hear some of the music from that night here: Puerto Rico Heineken Jazzfest 2012. Some of my favorite pieces: la sonora ponceña - homenaje a tres grandes del teclado (en vivo) (EL MEJOR AUDIO) - YouTube Cultura profética - Momento de ocio 1 - YouTube Cultura profética - Momento de ocio 3 - YouTube Cultura Profética - Diario - YouTube
I love jazz as you all should be able to tell by my user name. I love bebop and hard bop and all the classic artists associated with that type of jazz. I'm also really into current jazz, guys like Kurt Rosenwinkel, Robert Glasper, Chris Potter, and Ben Monder. If you into jazz at all, the cats I just listed are really worth checking out.
Wow I am pumped to see that there is some interest in jazz in the city! Now I will throw another one out there and see what happens. Anyone into playing or singing jazz? Anyone familiar with the Real Vocal books or jazz standards in general? I am a piano player and have been getting pretty involved and familiar with theory and standards. I'm wondering if there is anyone else out there who can relate and would like to jam or busk in New Orleans or whatever? Also I forgot to mention Nat King Cole is another fav of mine. He was highly underrated and his version of sweet Lorraine gets me every time. And Diana Krall is my favorite modern jazz person right now.
I play guitar, and have been trying to learn some theory on jazz, but I don't have much time on my hands. The best I can do is cover some bossa nova songs.
