Hi I cover my plants about 6:00PM starting yesterday I just realized I cant spray neem oil when the sun just sets like I used to. Will the neem oil burn my plants if I spray them right before covering them with the light dep tarp? I would also block most of the light by halfway blocking the intense sunlight with one wall of the tarp and not long after completely covering it. My concern is will the added heat under the tarp for about 4 hours still manage to burn the leaves even though they are in complete darkness? Or does there need to be direct sunlight to the leaves to cause burns? Note: I don't leave the tarp on after sunset to avoid humidity build-up. So it only be under the tarp for about 6pm-9ish.
Gonna be kinda hard to see on a new moon. But I have managed to do impossible things in the dark. Gonna be a real bitch but worth not getting bugs or burns.
I used to do it about 5 minutes before sunset and had no problems but I don't want to risk the little bit of left over sun light waking up my plants. So guess its gonna have to be in the dark,
Also man do you know if I have to keep light depping my plants after my normal outdoor flowering time which is usually on august 7th? They're all Indicas, GDP and Shiva Skunk from seed.
I’d personally spray after you take the tarps off at 9:00pm - then they have all night to dry before sunup. It’ll only take a short time and spraying in dark is always better than before hot sun. my $ .02. A headlamp will help. You can stop the tarps once your daylight hours are under 14 to 14.5 hours. j
Not many spray Neem oil in flower because it can leave an off taste in the finished buds. All I spray in flower is Potassium Bicarbonate for Powdery Mildew. BT Thuricide for Caterpillar control. Both can be applied anytime. BNW
Thanks, Jerry for the info. Do you have a suggested safe green light that you use that you trust that doesn't cause hermie problems? I have been a little paranoid about using them and have only been growing for 3 years so never used one. Will I still be able to do that even though I'm not covering them in the morning? It be nice not to have to do this for two and half months. But I'm hearing some people say sticking to 12/12 makes better buds? Some people say the extra two hours of light outdoors cause more leaf to be grown rather than fully putting the energy to the buds? And possibly slower than keeping them on the 12/12? Have you heard this anywhere? I just wanna make sure they go as fast as possible to avoid the rain and bud rot. I'm not looking to do multiple harvest. I want just make sure my plants finish fully with lots of amber. I need to get my plants at least 50% amber to knock out my Insomnia. I need a horse tranquilizer to put my ass to bed lol!
No, I don't plan to spray when they are in flower. They're still in veg right now. I do spray during pre-flowering though and had no problems. But yes bad idea to spray during full flower. I actually need to pick up a variety of predatory bugs lacewings, lady bugs, and pirate beetles helped big time last year for flowering.
The amber will end up being dependent on your strains and the amount of time you have for your specific area; ie. finishing in Sept/Oct/Nov - etc. Regarding a “green light”, if it was me I wouldn’t even think twice about it. Hermaphroditism is generally caused by poor genetics although there are some Landrace Sativas that are simply prone to hermies no matter what. For what it’s worth, for many, many years I’d go into my flower room at lights off, flick on the overhead incandescent bulb and do my 10 minutes of work, shut off the light and close the door. I never, ever got “hermies”. I don't see an issue with using a regular headlamp. Some might say different but from my own experience it takes regular lighting left on over a period of time to stress the plants enough to cause issues - like leaving your light on 24 hrs for a week or two - not for using a headlamp for a few minutes to spray. “Will I still be able to do that even though I'm not covering them in the morning?” Sorry dude - I’m not sure what you’re referring to? Are you referring to the need to cover your plants or not to promote flowering? If so, its that 14.5 hours that will trigger flowering in a vegging cannabis plant. Yes, 12 hours might trigger it a little quicker but I’m not sure - I know that the “14.5” has always been the golden rule. If you could cover them till you get a little close it would probably help but is it entirely necessary? I’m in the northeast in Maine - and here at least our plants have always started flowering in August. We actually had a strain called “MOB” that finished mid September. It was a shame when we lost it some years back. can I ask what part of the planet you’re growing on? j
I also wanted to ask what, exactly that you’re using for a neem product and how you’re going about mixing it? Cold pressed organic neem oil is the best - you’ll get the most out of it and need less in your mix. Are you seeing pests or is this just a general IPM “Management” type spraying? j
Good to know I drive my wife crazy on being so paranoid about any lights around the area. I was even worried if someone drove in the back and flashed the headlights on them for only a few secs. I really wish a professional scientific test could be done to know exactly how much time or intensity causes cannabis to reveg or hermie. I get sick of the guessing game lol. But I do feel your right and the fact you been doing it for so many years with no problems. I think just in case so I don't have any worries at night I will use the green light but might just wait till the moon is out again and then I can see. I just can't see much of anything with the new moon. I did sprinkle some pirate beetles and hung lacewing egg cards yesterday. So maybe it is better I hold of a little on spraying them so the predator bugs aren't disturbed. Yeah really don't want to cover them for that long also worried in late flower when the light dep cover is on even though its only about 4 hours worried about getting bud rot especially the Grandaddy Purple which I never grown before. Might have to had a dehumidifier and fans in their when the flowers start bulking up if I decide to still go that route. I'm growing in Southern Oregon in Cave Junction. Its sort a Mediterranean climate but heavy rains come in around October and November skyrocketing the humidity rotting buds. It's like a desert between June to September and sometimes into mid October. And the sun his much more intense with little to no clouds. I had a plant root bound last year and it started flowering in the intense august and july sun and the nug looked like indoor so that's why I decided I light dep this year.
I'm using Dyna Gro Pure organic neem oil cold-pressed. I didn't have much of any pests just mostly randam grasshoppers chewed at the leaves a bit. But yes it's only for general IPM. I also put neem seed meal in my pots to deter bugs that live in the soil. I'll also use diamecious earth sometimes. I also thinking of smearing neem oil up the stem so ants and bugs never walk up the plant. Also this first time I'm forcing my plants to go into flower early. Can I still defoliate the bottom during flowering? Some people say defoliating after flowering is a no-no and induces stress. But also heard outdoor plants cant take more stress than indoor. Or does it even matter as long your not cutting whole branches off or fucking with the top? Because I already lollypopped and topped them a few weeks ago but there growing more leaves that I would like to get rid of.
You’re good to go removing growth right up to the end. Its amazing what cannabis will take and keep on thriving. j
