When to remove humidity dome and put under lights

Discussion in 'First Time Marijuana Growers' started by EZskanking, Jul 31, 2012.

  1. Should a humidity dome be removed as soon as a seed sprouts and shows it's two leaves or should it stay on longer?

Also should it go under lights as soon as it sprouts?

    Thanks.

  2. I've heard babies are fine with either 24 or 18, but you have better chance of feminization with 18/6 if you're using random seeds etc

  3. Thanks. They are fem seeds and planning to run 18/6, just not sure when to put them under the lights. Trying to take it slow and not screw anything up. Wondering about the humidity dome too.

They will do fine under either light cycle.

They need light as soon as they sprout, as long as temps and humidity are OK they will be fine.

Neither will result in changing the sex. Sex is predetermined by genetics. Who ever or where ever you got your info from has no clue about marijuana, or genetics in general.

  5. I never use a humidity dome but if so after it sprouts. You really don't need it. No where in nature is there a humidity dome.

  6. Sounds like several people with stickies on this forum have no clue in general then

    just one example:

    http://forum.grasscity.com/outdoor-marijuana-growing/27092-gr0wers-depth-how-grow-outdoors.html

    5. Hours of daylight: few hours of daylight (e.g. 14 hours) makes for more female individuals, a long day (e.g. 18 hours) makes for more male plants.

  7. Well that would be you quoting that. Its like THC. THC levels are genetically predetermined. If all it can do is 20% THC thats it not a percentage more. Now the game we play is to maximize that through proper growing conditions thats the challenge.

There are so many wives tales to growing its silly. Most of it like you and your kids if you have any or plan to is all genetically predetermined for the most part.

  8. So you're saying that a standard non-feminized seed is determined to become male or female from the second it grows, and nothing you do in sprouting/growing etc will change that?

    Interesting theory.

  9. Absolutely. Sex is genetically predetermined but environment can play a role and it does in hermies.

Theres alot of wives tales out there and should whatever voodoo magic you try give you a positive outcome that person attributes it to that. Should it not work that same person will say maybe next time and when it does it validates his nutty theory.

If what your proposing even had a remote chance then why sell feminized seeds. We would all apply some elixir or do some sort of dance to make it a female and all be very very happy campers.

  10. so you think "a chance" and "being able to force gender" are the same thing? you didn't take many logic courses, did you?

  11. Share your theory so we can try :). I work on electronics for a living. Im pretty logical :)

  12. How about a double-blind laboratory experiment published in the Journal of Experimental Botany showing significant differences in in-vitro pollen production?

    http://www.plantstress.com/Articles/up_general_files/Temperature and reproduction.pdf

cliffs: low temp stress renders in-vitro pollen production nearly nil, producing a larger proportion of unfertilized female plants

Statistical proof. Not sure what more you want.

  13. Whats that have to do with Cannabis. That articles first couple paragraphs talks about high heat being determential to plants. Cannabis evolved in some of the hottest climates known to man..Afghan, Pakistan, Tropics. It also thrives in some of the coldest..Siberia. There not all born female or male there. If they were Cannabis would only be able to be raised in temperate climates or natural selection would of marked it for extinction.

Saying that applies to cannabis is saying all the reproductive habits of all mammals are similar. A kangaroo is a mammal yet its young only develop partially inside it and it can actually get a 2nd egg fertilized and its body stops development of it untill the 1st is old enough to emerge form it. Its a mammal but is its reproductive life procreation life anything like that of a cat? Nope.

There as no statistical proof at all that involved cannabis and world wide there have been many a study of that plant by universities, and major pharma. Cannabis has been very well studied because of its observable and repeatable sex changing ability, which is not found in the majority of plant life on earth.

  14. that's quite the leap, you must have attended the same university

my point was that genetics built into the seed of something aren't the end-all deciding factor as the other poster believes of his children and cannabis (maybe kangaroos too, didn't ask)

  15. No I didnt attend that university.

Perhaps but its not that expensive to get feminzed seed :). 99% chance of a female which is leaps and bounds better then voodoo and magic dance :)

  16. sure, but that wasn't my point

and it's not always a price issue, it can be a bit tricky getting good seeds into the US. And in medical states where we're getting some pretty high-end genetics, free bag seeds can be more than enough to get you started instead of jumping thru all the seed-ordering hoops

Wrong. Marijuana plants sex can be influenced by several things ranging from container size to heat stress. People USED to think sex was ore determined but now we know better. That's why feminized seeds are possible.

Agreed. Humidity domes are for clones. No need for them with seedlings. :)

With non feminized seeds there will always be some male and some female, but there are things that we can do to ensure the highest number of females possible. Studies show large starting pot size and controlled temps in veg are more likely to produce females. Small pots and high temps in veg product more makes and hermies.

He's right. This has been proven with cannabis too. And who says there is a high ratio of females to males in naturally hot climates. We are trying to optimize conditions. Plants historically grew in rain too, but we keep them dry now to avoid mold.
