so I am thinking about doing an outdoor grow this summer. I grow indoors but after seeing some pics of outdoor plants i want to try it. So my question is when should I plant them? I will be planting in Marquette co about a mile from lake superior. The thing is this is my first spring here so not sure when a good time is. I have heard we can get snow as late as may. So if anyone on here grows around here and has any advice I would sure appreciate it.
Northern mi here too, but northern lower mich not a yooper!! Best to start out indoors in 3 or 5 gal pot then put outside in june.
in central MN i start indoors in a quart pot around 4/20. than move outdoors may 5th to 12th. make sure your not too close too the lake, or your plants will be 10-15 degrees coller in the summer and not grow as fast.
thanks guys. When do you guys usually harvest? And whats your average yeild and favorite strains? I am going to just grow some bag seed that I tried to grow indoor but the plant got to big and hermed on me so let it pollinate itself in hopes for some fem seeds. I haven't tried the outdoors thin yet but I figured I might as well try since I got the seeds just sitting around.
Harvest time depends on what strain you use and how you care for your plants. It is possible to get from ounces to pounds on outdoor plants. In your location it would be best to go with a early flowering variety that is weather hardy or be able to start flowering them early indoors. I like Northern Lights and Durban Poison for outdoors but there are lots of different kinds you can use. I do TW outdoors as well but it needs to be preflowered indoors or be gaurded closely during frost season cus it is a late bloomer. Growing the seeds you are talking about is probably going to leave you disappointed with your results. If grew from bag seed and the plant hermied and self-pollinated the offspring will probably be pretty shitty and take along time to mature. I am not an expert in marijuana breeding by anymeans but I think to achieve femed seeds you need to take a plant that is not really predisposed to being hermi (like alot of bag seed is) and force it to herm by stressing its enviromental conditions or just letting it go way late so it hermies as a last ditch effort to get seeded. You then need to take that pollen and fertilize a completely different female plant (not a clone sis of the same plant) and then you have femmed seeds. If you have a bunch of seeds just laying around I know its tempting to just throw them out but getting even decent quality from stock like that would be just random chance and not very likely. Not to mention you are taking added risk for plants that would most likely be brick weed quality at best. That being said if its all you got its all you got. I have been there before. Just make sure and take care the plants don't get too much undue outside stress and keep a close eye for more hermies cus your probably going to have more. And keep your expectations low so you wont be suprised if it does not turn out how you had hoped. I see that you are in MI. Do you have a medical mj card? If so getting a few clones from a dispensary or compassion club would be a far better way to go.
I'm lower mi. I put out mid may harvest mid to late October and that's wih a heavy sativa. From bag seed being up north will just make you harvest a lil sooner before cold temps hit if its your first year do some bag seed you'll learn. A lot and not wast $20 clones or$80 seeds. Good luck
i think i will start them around 4/20 inside and transplant them sometime in the middle of may if the weather looks good. and hopefully if everything goes well i will get to harvest my first outdoor grow. fingers crossed
You can grow as long as you know the danger of frost is over. If you paid for seeds then wait. in Jersey we've gotten frost twice recently. I just germinated 6 bag seeds and stuck them outside in pots and they came up even after the frost. I didn't lose a single one. Your biggest probs will be creatures. You're going to want to fence each plant in and piss around them. if you cant cage them get dog hair and just kind of stink of the place. Check the undersides of the leaves constantly for bugs. spiders are great. they love cages which is a plus. If you have ticks i'd invest in a lot of really good bugspray. thats my advice
