When to add nutes using slurry test for ppm

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Indoors' started by keifer2ke, Mar 31, 2021.

  1. Hi everyone, im new. I grew quite a bit outdoors but newbie to growing indoors. My first grow wasn't good. Big hopes for the 2nd grow.

I'm locked in on soil and nutrients since I already bought them lol

What I'm trying to do is test my organic soil for ppm. I'm going to use FF happy frog. Im trying to figure out when to start adding jack's 321 fertilizer. I understand Happy frog has nutrients for anywhere between 2 and 6 weeks depending on who i ask. I was told to watch the ppm and when it goes below 1000ppm begin adding nutrients. My problem is that when I do a slurry test of new unused soil for ph and ppm it only has around 680ppm. i was told it should be over 2000.. So maybe I screwed up the test.

    Here's my test
1/2 soil 1 cup distilled water. Mix well and let sit for 30 minutes and stir again. Filter through coffee filter. Take reading

I also added the filtered water back to soil for a higher reading but got similar results.

Any ideas? I really just want to know when to start adding nutrients. I burnt my first grow. Im growing autos so I'd rather not wait for deficiencies to show before I feed. I wish there was a schedule for jack's in soil like there is for hydroponic. I've heard from many that jack's works great in soil

Where I was great. Good people. But, unfortunately the replies were a bit slow for me. I get it though. But that's how I ended here

Thanks in advance if anyone can help me

  2. If in soil do a slurry test. Take a large shot glass of soil. Dig down a little. Than put that into a Tupperware small container. Than put the equal amount of distilled water. Stir for 1 minute and than stick ur ph meter than ur ppm meter. This will show u what's going on! So if ppms are over 400 u just need water and microbes if u use them. Under 400 ppm feed

  3. Thanks Papapuff! Actually I'm trying to test brand new Fox Farms Happy Frog still in bag for my 2nd grow. (1st grow beyond slurry test )

I'm trying to figure out when to start adding nutes for 2nd grow. Someone told me when slurry test shows ppm under 1000 add nutes. My test on the new soil showed only 680 ppm. I guess it should be over 2000 with new soil

I'll try your method since mine was a little different. I didn't use equal parts, I had 2 parts water 1 part soil and I filtered it.. duh

    Thank you

  4. I would also invest in a refractometer if you haven't already. I think there are some decent $30 options out there. Then you can check the Brix often and if it starts to go down then you check your run off ppm. This way your not always having to water to run off.

  5. So, I did the test again and got 770 ppm. The ph did read a little higher. It was 5.7 my test and 6.1 your test. So I guess when I add my tap water with 240 ppm it would be 1010 ppm lol

I guess I'll keep track of ppm during early growth and maybe start a 1/4 strength feeding at around 4 weeks and see how it goes

I fertized too early on first grow and burnt them. They they have really never recovered. Im really trying not to repeat lol

  6. I don't have one of those. Never heard of that. Im also unsure of the term Brix.. but if it will help me know when to feed id definitely spend $30

    Thanks

  8. I Googled it, so I know what it is, but couldn't find anything on how I could use it. It says for garden and agriculture.

This will help me figure out my soils nutrients content so I know when to feed?
